It is so great that we are trying to preserve all the snow water from "global warming",
One problem we don't hear about is now that Diamond Valley Reservoir is being filled we in Hemet face the sword of Damocles over our heads, as should we experience a 7 plus earthquake near of at the dam, as happened in the early 1900's, and the San Jacinto branch of the San Andreas has been calculated to be capable of, the dam was not designed to withstand. Our fearless leaders in Hemet allowed MWD to build the dam because they promised Speed boating and water skiing on the lake, but reneged on that on local employment. We located 7 faults crossing the East Dam during construction, and while MWD claims if there is a breach in the dam it will take 4 days to empty, filling Hemet at 12' at the police station and wiping out part of Menifee and Old Town Temecula. The real fact of the matter, is the rock used on the dam was rejected by the Corps of Engineers for roadwork, and the University of Utah testing it said it did not meat specs for the dam. No earthen dam in history has lasted more then 1 day, and this should be no exception, especially since it was designed to only take about 4' in vertical deformation, and was built in a rift valley not a valley caused by alluvial. This is why the foundation was much deeper then designed and the grouting of the foundational rock was the biggest extra expense on the dams, the grout was injected to fill the cracks and voids to prevent leakage undermining the dam. This is also why Hemet School district had to build West Valley HS much higher then usual, because the chance of flooding from the dam breaking. MWD refused to have Loyds of London give a flood insurance quote for all of Hemet that could be effected by flooding from dam failure. As we load up the aquifers that weight transfers to the plates and may build up even more pressure. Geophysicists have indicated we are overdue "the big one".
