A convicted felon who joined another man in committing a robbery in Perris during which shots were fired at several people was sentenced Friday to 47 years, eight months in state prison.

Daniel Brandon Gonzalez, 23, of Perris was convicted in September of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, two counts of armed robbery and one count of being a felon in possession of a loaded gun, in addition to sentence- enhancing gun-use allegations. The Banning jury acquitted him of attempted murder in connection with the March 2024 attack.

During a hearing at the Banning Justice Center Friday, Riverside County Superior Court Judge Samuel Diaz imposed the required sentence for most counts, though court records indicated that he suspended terms on several others, which would have added an additional 20 to 30 years behind bars, effectively turning it into life with parole.

Gonzalez’s co-defendant, 24-year-old Ethan Michael Morris of Perris, pleaded guilty in 2024 to grand theft under a pretrial agreement with the District Attorney’s Office. In exchange for his admission, prosecutors dropped two related charges against Morris. He was sentenced to six years in prison.

According to sheriff’s Sgt. Chad Thompson, the pair confronted several people, whose identities were not disclosed, shortly after 8 p.m. on March 15, 2024, at a business in the 500 block of West Fourth Street, near Park Avenue.

During the encounter, Gonzalez pulled a handgun and demanded money from the victims, then shot at them but missed, authorities said. No one was injured.

The defendants immediately fled the location.

Detectives spent the ensuing days developing leads that ultimately pointed to Gonzalez and Morris as the robbers.

Morris was arrested a few days later after he was summoned to the sheriff’s Perris station for questioning.

A search warrant was served within a week at Gonzalez’s property in the 300 block of West Third Street, where “items of evidentiary value were located, along with three firearms,” Thompson said.

The defendant was arrested without incident.

Court records show Gonzalez had prior convictions for domestic violence and assault, while Morris had a prior for assault resulting in great bodily injury.

INLAND EMPIRE, CA — A seemingly innocent cell phone sale turned violent over the weekend, leading to the arrests of four Inland Empire men, according to a report from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident began shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday in Loma Linda. The cell phone seller, whose name and age were not released, agreed to meet up with a potential buyer after the two connected via Facebook Marketplace.

The meeting was set for the 23000 block of Redlands Blvd.

When the victim arrived, he was approached by 20-year-old Gerardo Hernandez of Jurupa Valley and 21-year-old Manuel Corral of Ontario, according to the sheriff’s department.

Hernandez snatched the cell phone and refused to pay. Corral drew a black handgun and pointed it at the victim, the department reported.

“The victim feared for his life and fled for his safety,” the agency said.

The alleged robbers got into a Honda Civic and took off.

The incident was reported, and a notification was sent to nearby law enforcement agencies regarding the suspect vehicle.

About an hour after the alleged robbery, the Ontario Police Department stopped the Honda Civic.

Inside the car were Hernandez and Corral, along with Ontario resident Fabian Corral, 20, and 21-year-old Reymundo Hernandez of Jurupa Valley. It’s unclear whether the men are related.

“Officers located a loaded black handgun inside the vehicle along with the victim’s cellular telephone,” the sheriff’s department said.

All four suspects were booked into San Bernardino County jail on suspicion of robbery and conspiracy charges, both felonies.

File: SW232710041

Details:

On September 28, 2023, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Southwest Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to a business in the 34000 Block of Calle Arnaz in the unincorporated area of Temecula, reference an armed robbery. Upon arrival, deputies learned the suspect was waiting outside of the business as employees were closing the store for the evening. The suspect pointed a handgun at the employees and forced one of them back into the office to empty money from the safe. The suspect made threats toward the employees during the encounter and fled the location on foot prior to deputies’ arrival.

The victims were able to provide a description of the suspect and direction of travel. Responding deputies checked the area along with Sheriff’s Aviation; however, the suspect was not located.

The Southwest Station’s Robbery/Burglary Suppression Team (RBST) assumed the investigation and began following all leads. RBST conducted an extensive canvass of the area during daytime hours and located evidence dropped on a nearby property. Through use of a Sheriff’s bloodhound, deputies were able to locate additional evidence dropped by the suspect. Utilizing investigative resources and evidence located, members of RBST positively identified the suspect as Irvin Banks, a 50-year old resident of Temecula. It was also learned Banks is on federal probation for robbery.

During the search, deputies located additional items of evidentiary value connecting Banks to the robbery.

Banks was booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center for kidnapping with the Intent to commit robbery, criminal threats, and assault with a deadly weapon, where he is being held on $1,000,000 bail.
File # TE232060006

Details:

On July 25, 2023 at approximately 2:40 AM, Southwest Station deputies responded to a business in the 44500 Block of Bedford Court in the City of Temecula, reference an armed robbery and the report of someone being shot at the location. Upon arrival, deputies learned a white male adult entered the business and walked out shortly thereafter with stolen merchandise. A struggle ensued between the suspect and store employee who was attempting to get the stolen merchandise back. During the confrontation, it was reported the suspect pulled out a firearm and discharged it once. The suspect fled the location in a vehicle and was not immediately located. It was determined nobody was struck by the gunfire.

The Southwest Station’s Robbery/Burglary Suppression Team (RBST) responded and assumed the investigation. Through investigative leads and use of video surveillance, members of RBST positively identified the suspect as Erik Kittmer, a 25-year-old resident of Temecula.

On July 27, 2023, Kittmer was located near the 44600 Block of Lorraine Drive in the City of Temecula, where he was taken into custody without incident. Southwest Station RBST authored a search warrant for Kittmer’s vehicle and residence for evidence of the robbery. Deputies located several items of evidence linking Kittmer to the robbery, including a black semi-automatic handgun.
