Reporting Deputy: Sergeant R. Grmusha

File # MV231040393

Details:

On April 14, 2023 about 11:22 PM, deputies from the Moreno Valley Station of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the report of a major-injury traffic collision on Day Street, south of Box Springs Road, in the city of Moreno Valley. Deputies arrived on-scene to find the collision involved a white Volkswagen Passat and a pedestrian, who was found unresponsive in the roadway. Personnel from CalFire and America Medical Response responded to provide medical treatment for the pedestrian; after which, the pedestrian was transported to a local area hospital for further treatment.

The Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station Traffic Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the location and assumed the investigation. The preliminary investigation revealed the Volkswagen was traveling northbound on Day Street towards Box Springs Road, when the pedestrian suddenly entered the roadway. The pedestrian was seen running eastbound across Day Street and entered the path of the Volkswagen. The driver of the Volkswagen attempted to avoid colliding with the pedestrian; however, the pedestrian was struck, resulting in major non-life threatening injuries. The pedestrian remained hospitalized for medical treatment. The driver of the Volkswagen was uninjured and remained at the scene to cooperate with the investigation. At this time, neither intoxication, nor reckless driving appear to be a factor in this collision.

The collision investigation and evidence collection required the closure of Day Street, between Box Springs Road and the California 60 Freeway. The identities of the involved parties will not be released pending further investigation.

Anyone with information about this collision is encouraged to call Deputy Jason Slover of the Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station at 951-486-6889 or the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office at 951-776-1099.

File # LA222610028

Details:

On Sunday, September 18, 2022, at 4:49 PM Thermal Station deputies responded to a report of a major injury collision at the intersection of Avenue 48 and Dune Palms Drive in the city of La Quinta. When patrol deputies arrived, they located two vehicles, a white 2009 Nissan Rogue, and a gray 2021 Dodge Durango, with major collision damage.

The four occupants of the Nissan Rogue had major injuries and were transported to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment. The driver of the Dodge Durango, Daniel Jesus Barrera, a 21-year-old resident of Indio, refused medical treatment.

Members of the La Quinta Traffic Team arrived and assumed the investigation. The preliminary investigation found both vehicles were traveling westbound on Avenue 48 near Dune Palms Dr. Barrera was traveling at a high rate of speed and collided with the rear end of the Nissan causing the Nissan to lose control and roll over. Barrera was determined to be driving under the influence of alcohol when the collision occurred and was arrested for driving under the influence causing injury. He was booked into John Benoit Detention Center.

This collision is still under investigation and anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Deputy J. Shields of the Thermal Station at 760–863–8990 or call anonymously at (760) 341-STOP (7867) and reference incident #LA222610028.

Reporting Deputy: Sergeant Chad Craig

File # MV221300001

On May 10, 2022, about 12:06 a.m., deputies driving a marked black and white Sheriff’s patrol vehicle were traveling east on Alessandro Blvd., in the city of Moreno Valley. As they approached the intersection of Lasselle Ave., they observed a white Nissan coupe doing burn-outs (commonly referred to as donuts) in the intersection. The deputies activated their vehicle’s emergency lights to conduct an enforcement stop on the Nissan for reckless driving. The Nissan ignored the deputies and continued doing several additional circles in the intersection. The Nissan then fled the area at a high rate of speed and attempted to evade the deputies by driving recklessly through residential streets. As deputies attempted to catch up, the driver of the Nissan made a U-turn, turned off the headlights, and drove straight toward two patrol vehicles. The deputies were forced to swerve to avoid being struck head-on by the suspect in the Nissan. As additional deputies were responding to the area to assist, the suspect drove through the intersection of Lasselle St., and Bay Ave., against the red light. The suspect collided with a marked Sheriff’s patrol traveling lawfully through the intersection on a green light. The suspect abandoned his vehicle, then fled the scene on foot. He was located in a nearby backyard. Two deputies sustained minor injuries as a result of the traffic collision. The driver was identified as Ramiro Benitez-Jimenez, a 23 year-old resident of Moreno Valley, who was arrested for two counts of assault with a deadly weapon against a peace officer.

Illegal street racing and sideshows are a growing issue throughout the Inland Empire. These types have incidents surged during the pandemic, as fewer people were on the roads. This has resulted in numerous innocent bystanders losing their lives. The Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station is looking into various ways to combat these types of illegal activities and is taking a low-tolerance approach to street racing. Taking over streets, destroying intersections, and driving at excessive speeds is dangerous and a serious threat to other motorists, pedestrians, and our community. No one should be killed or injured because someone wants to show off.

A conviction of illegal speed contest, reckless driving, or exhibition of speed could result in fines in excess of $1500, 90 days in jail, suspension of your driver license, and your vehicle being impounded for 30 days.

A wrong-way driver was one of two people killed in a head-on crash on the 215 Freeway in Riverside early Tuesday morning.

The collision occurred at about 12:30 a.m. on the northbound 215 Freeway near Center Street. According to California Highway Patrol, officers responded to a call of a Ford Fusion traveling the wrong way on the northbound side of the freeway just prior to the head-on collision.

Officers arrived to discover the Fusion had slammed into a Ford Focus in the carpool lane.

The drivers of both vehicles, a man and a woman, died at the scene. No names were released. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Firefighters with the CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department were called in to extricate the victims from their vehicles.

The northbound lanes were shut down for several hours, but have since reopened.

It’s unclear if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.

By MARCIA DUNN

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — The moon is about to get walloped by 3 tons of space junk, a punch that will carve out a crater that could fit several semitractor-trailers.

The leftover rocket will smash into the far side of the moon at 5,800 mph (9,300 kph) on Friday, away from telescopes’ prying eyes. It may take weeks, even months, to confirm the impact through satellite images.

It’s been tumbling haphazardly through space, experts believe, since China launched it nearly a decade ago. But Chinese officials are dubious it’s theirs.

No matter whose it is, scientists expect the object to carve out a hole 33 feet to 66 feet (10 to 20 meters) across and send moon dust flying hundreds of miles (kilometers) across the barren, pockmarked surface.

Low-orbiting space junk is relatively easy to track. Objects launching deeper into space are unlikely to hit anything and these far-flung pieces are usually soon forgotten, except by a handful of observers who enjoy playing celestial detective on the side.

SpaceX originally took the rap for the upcoming lunar litter after asteroid tracker Bill Gray identified the collision course in January. He corrected himself a month later, saying the “mystery” object was not a SpaceX Falcon rocket upper stage from the 2015 launch of a deep space climate observatory for NASA.

Gray said it was likely the third stage of a Chinese rocket that sent a test sample capsule to the moon and back in 2014. But Chinese ministry officials said the upper stage had reentered Earth’s atmosphere and burned up.

But there were two Chinese missions with similar designations — the test flight and 2020′s lunar sample return mission — and U.S. observers believe the two are getting mixed up.

The U.S. Space Command, which tracks lower space junk, confirmed Tuesday that the Chinese upper stage from the 2014 lunar mission never deorbited, as previously indicated in its database. But it could not confirm the country of origin for the object about to strike the moon.

“We focus on objects closer to the Earth,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

Gray, a mathematician and physicist, said he’s confident now that it’s China’s rocket.

“I’ve become a little bit more cautious of such matters,” he said. “But I really just don’t see any way it could be anything else.”

Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard and Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics supports Gray’s revised assessment, but notes: “The effect will be the same. It’ll leave yet another small crater on the moon.”

The moon already bears countless craters, ranging up to 1,600 miles (2,500 kilometers). With little to no real atmosphere, the moon is defenseless against the constant barrage of meteors and asteroids, and the occasional incoming spacecraft, including a few intentionally crashed for science’s sake. With no weather, there’s no erosion and so impact craters last forever.

China has a lunar lander on the moon’s far side, but it will be too far away to detect Friday’s impact just north of the equator. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter will also be out of range. It’s unlikely India’s moon-orbiting Chandrayaan-2 will be passing by then, either.

“I had been hoping for something (significant) to hit the moon for a long time. Ideally, it would have hit on the near side of the moon at some point where we could actually see it,” Gray said.

After initially pinning the upcoming strike on Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Gray took another look after an engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory questioned his claim. Now, he’s “pretty thoroughly persuaded” it’s a Chinese rocket part, based not only on orbital tracking back to its 2014 liftoff, but also data received from its short-lived ham radio experiment.

JPL’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies endorses Gray’s reassessment. A University of Arizona team also recently identified the Chinese Long March rocket segment from the light reflected off its paint, during telescope observations of the careening cylinder.

It’s about 40 feet (12 meters) long and 10 feet (3 meters) in diameter, and doing a somersault every two to three minutes.

Gray said SpaceX never contacted him to challenge his original claim. Neither have the Chinese.

“It’s not a SpaceX problem, nor is it a China problem. Nobody is particularly careful about what they do with junk at this sort of orbit,” Gray said.

Tracking deep space mission leftovers like this is hard, according to McDowell. The moon’s gravity can alter an object’s path during flybys, creating uncertainty. And there’s no readily available database, McDowell noted, aside from the ones “cobbled together” by himself, Gray and a couple others.

“We are now in an era where many countries and private companies are putting stuff in deep space, so it’s time to start to keep track of it,” McDowell said. “Right now there’s no one, just a few fans in their spare time.”

Details:

On February 13, 2021, about 11:57 PM, deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Moreno Valley Station, responded to the report of a hit and run traffic collision involving a pedestrian, near the intersection of Perris Boulevard and Fir Avenue, in the city of Moreno Valley. Deputies arrived on-scene to find that a male pedestrian had suffered life-threatening injuries and was declared deceased at the scene. Deputies determined the vehicle involved in the collision with the pedestrian had fled the area without rendering aid or summoning assistance.

The Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station Traffic Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the location and assumed the investigation. Information obtained during the preliminary investigation revealed the pedestrian was crossing Perris Boulevard, south of the intersection, when he was struck by an older, white, two-door Pontiac Grand Am traveling northbound on Perris Boulevard at a high rate of speed. The Pontiac slowed and pulled to the side of the roadway with a purple Scion XB following the collision, after which both the Pontiac and Scion fled the area eastbound on Fir Avenue.

It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision. The investigation will remain on-going.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to call Deputy Dustin Deanne of the Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station at 951-486-6887 or the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department at 951-776-1099.
