On Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 3:48 a.m., deputies assigned to the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station responded to the 3300 block of Avalon Street in Jurupa Valley, reference a domestic dispute. It was reported a male adult was using a knife to threaten a female while multiple family members were present in the residence.

Deputies arrived on the scene and were able to safely evacuate everyone from the residence, but the suspect refused to exit. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau (SEB) and the Crisis Negotiation Team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. After extensive negotiations, SEB entered the residence, where the suspect exited a room armed with a knife. Despite multiple commands given to surrender, the suspect failed to comply, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was struck by gunfire, and deputies rendered medical aid; however, the suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. No deputies were injured during this incident. This is an ongoing investigation, and no additional details are available at this time.

At 4:51 p.m., deputies from the Riverside Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit and Lake Elsinore Special Enforcement Team located two subjects in the Temecula area matching the description of the outstanding suspects. Deputies attempted a vehicle stop, but the vehicle failed to yield, and a pursuit was initiated. The suspects ran from the vehicle but were later taken into custody without incident. One of the suspects had injuries consistent with the deputy-involved shooting that had occurred earlier in the day. They were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. There are no outstanding suspects. The identity of the suspects will not be released at this time. This is an ongoing investigation; no further details are available.

Details:

On Sunday, December 31, 2023, at 1:09 p.m., a Wildomar deputy assigned to the Riverside Sheriff’s Lake Elsinore Station located a stolen vehicle in the area of Cervera Road and Prairie Road, Wildomar. The deputy attempted a vehicle stop; however, the suspect failed to follow commands. The suspect vehicle made a U-turn and intentionally drove into the driver’s side door of the deputy’s vehicle, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred. The deputy’s vehicle became disabled as a result of the collision.

The two occupants of the suspect vehicle ran northbound on Prairie Road toward Cervera Road, entered a silver Chevy Impala with license plate CA 7WLX269, and fled the scene. Witnesses described the first suspect as a 27–28-year-old thin-build Hispanic male, approximately 5’9”. He was last seen wearing a green hat, black hooded sweatshirt, and blue jeans. The second suspect was described as a 30-year-old Hispanic male approximately 5’3” or 5’4” heavy build. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and dark-colored jeans. He also has red lips tattooed on his right cheek.

The deputy sustained minor injuries during this incident. The suspects remain outstanding, and their injuries are unknown at this time. This is an ongoing investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

The suspect in this case has been identified as 53-year-old Kelly Lynette Cronn, a resident of Palm Desert. Cronn has been charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and is currently in custody and recovering from her injuries at the Riverside University Health Systems Detention Care Unit.

The reporting party advised they were hiding in a bedroom but could hear someone inside their residence. Upon arrival, deputies located an unsecured door and entered the residence. Deputies located and detained one subject when a second subject appeared from a back room armed with a knife. Deputies gave commands to drop the knife, but the suspect refused, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.

Deputies provided medical aid, and the suspect was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The other detained subject was transported to the station, interviewed, and later released. No additional injuries were reported as a result of this incident. The suspect’s identity will not be released at this time.

On Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at 10:38 p.m., while on duty, a Riverside Sheriff’s Hemet Station deputy was pumping gas in his sheriff’s vehicle at a business in the area of Meridian Street and Florida Avenue in Hemet. The deputy was alerted to a suspect standing on the sidewalk holding a handgun. The deputy gave the suspect commands; however, the suspect continued to manipulate the weapon, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.

The deputy was uninjured, and the suspect was provided medical aid until they were transported to a local hospital.

On Monday, June 19, 2023, at 11:31 PM, a deputy from the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station conducted a check of an occupied vehicle in the area of Bromley Avenue and Baker Street in Lake Elsinore. When the deputy approached the vehicle, the driver produced a handgun and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.

The driver was struck by gunfire and deputies rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived. The driver was later transported to a local hospital where he remains in stable condition.

Details:

On Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at 12:56 PM, deputies responded to the 800 block of Minor Street in San Jacinto reference a domestic dispute. The female reported her boyfriend was behaving erratically and armed with a machete. The female was able to escape from the residence, however, the suspect prevented her 12-year-old child from leaving with her. The suspect barricaded himself and the juvenile inside of the residence. When deputies attempted to rescue the juvenile, the suspect hit the deputy in the head with a wooden object, causing a minor injury, and then swung the machete at another deputy.

The Special Enforcement Bureau responded to assist with the rescue of the juvenile. During the rescue, the suspect struck a deputy with the machete and a deputy involved shooting occurred.

The juvenile was uninjured and safely removed from the residence. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. One deputy was treated on scene for his injuries and the other was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — A Virginia sheriff’s deputy who police say traveled to California to kill three family members of a 15-year-old girl he tried to sexually extort online killed himself with a government-issued firearm, authorities said Saturday.

Austin Lee Edwards, 28, drove across the country and on Nov. 25 killed the girl’s mother and grandparents and set fire to their home in Riverside, a city about 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of downtown Los Angeles, authorities said.

That same day, Edwards died by suicide during a shootout with San Bernardino sheriff’s deputies. The teenage girl was rescued.

“Our detectives determined the gun used was Edwards’ department-issued semi-automatic service pistol,” sheriff’s spokeswoman Gloria Huerta said in a statement.

The Riverside Police Department, which is investigating the deaths of the girl’s family members, has not said how they were killed.

Edwards, a resident of North Chesterfield, Virginia, appears to have posed online as a 17-year-old boy to engage in a romantic relationship with the girl and obtain her personal information by deceiving her with a false identity, known as “catfishing,” police said.

Authorities said the girl stopped communicating with him after he asked her to send him nude photos of herself.

Edwards was a former Virginia state trooper and was a sheriff’s deputy in Washington County, Virginia, at the time of the killings.

Both law enforcement agencies have said they found no warning signs about Edwards before he was hired. But a police report from the Abingdon Police Department in Virginia shows he was detained in 2016 for a psychiatric evaluation over threats to kill himself and his father, years before he joined law enforcement.

On Thursday — a day after the Los Angeles Times broke the news about the mental health episode — the Virginia State Police said a recently completed review showed “human error” resulted in an incomplete database query during the hiring process.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office did not respond to calls seeking comment on the 2016 episode.

On Saturday, November 12, 2022, about 3:30 PM, a deputy from the Cabazon Sheriff’s Station conducted a traffic enforcement stop of a male suspect on Carmen Avenue west of Rafael Street in Cabazon. The suspect was riding a bicycle on the wrong side of the street and known to have a felony arrest warrant for a violation of parole. The suspect was uncooperative with the deputy and attempted to flee the scene on his bicycle. The deputy tried to detain the suspect, but the suspect removed a large knife from his pocket and a deputy involved shooting occurred. The suspect was shot and fell to the ground.

After the suspect was shot, the deputy rendered aid and medical personnel were called. Paramedics from Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department arrived at the location and pronounced the suspect deceased at the scene.

The identity of the suspect will not be released at this time, pending next of kin notification. No deputies were injured during this incident and there are no outstanding suspects. The knife used by the suspect was recovered at the location. The involved deputy will be placed on paid administrative leave according to Department policy. On Saturday, September 3, 2022, about 5:24 PM, deputies from the Jurupa Valley Station Special Enforcement Team conducted a traffic enforcement stop of a vehicle in the area of Dodd Street and 48 Street in the city of Jurupa Valley. Deputies contacted the driver and ordered him out of the vehicle for further investigation. The driver became uncooperative, re-entered his vehicle, and sped away dragging a deputy a short distance. A vehicle pursuit ensued, ultimately concluding on a steep hillside in the 3600 block of Conning Street. Deputies exited their vehicles and attempted to call the suspect out of his vehicle. The suspect reversed his vehicle in rapid acceleration in the direction of the deputies, resulting in a deputy-involved shooting.

The suspect, Jeovanni Ramirez, 31-year-old resident of Jurupa Valley, was not struck by gunfire. He was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. There are no outstanding suspects.

The injured deputy was transported to a local hospital and is receiving medical treatment. He is expected to be released and his injuries are considered non-life threatening. The involved deputy will be placed on paid administrative leave according to Department policy and his name will not be released at this time.
