MORONGO RESERVATION — Morongo Casino Resort & Spa is preparing to celebrate America’s 250th birthday with two weekends of entertainment, fireworks, promotions and special events beginning later this month.

The resort’s “Stars, Stripes & Sizzle” celebration will take place June 26-28 and again July 3-5, featuring fireworks, live music, DJs, carnival-style games and themed dining specials throughout the property.

The festivities will officially begin June 26 with a fireworks display scheduled for 9 p.m. Resort officials said the event is intended to give visitors an early start to Independence Day celebrations while recognizing the nation’s semiquincentennial, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Throughout both weekends, guests can enjoy live entertainment on multiple stages, poolside activities, interactive games and promotional giveaways.

A centerpiece of the celebration will be Morongo’s “Rev, White, and Blue” vehicle giveaway promotion on June 28. The festivities continue July 3 with the resort’s “250 for 250” promotion, which will award a total of $250,000 in prizes in honor of the nation’s 250th anniversary.

On July 4, guests will also have an opportunity to receive a commemorative 250th anniversary hat while supplies last.

Amy Hunstock, vice president of marketing for Morongo Casino Resort & Spa, said the resort wanted to create an event that brings together entertainment, community and summer traditions.

“As the country prepares to celebrate 250 years, we’re excited to bring guests together for a series of events centered around entertainment, celebration, and community,” Hunstock said. “From fireworks and live music to gaming, dining, and special promotions, this summer lineup reflects the energy and experiences guests have come to expect at Morongo.”

In addition to entertainment and gaming promotions, visitors will find a variety of limited-time food and beverage offerings inspired by classic fair and carnival favorites.

Featured menu items include a giant Bavarian pretzel with beer cheese sauce, fried chicken tenders paired with French toast sticks, corn esquites topped with Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, caramel apples, specialty frappuccinos and dessert shakes. Additional themed beverages and treats will also be available at various dining locations throughout the resort.

The famed “Festival of Lights” has returned to downtown Riverside, and will continue until the start of 2025, featuring millions of lights, holiday displays, carnival rides, caroling, Santa Claus and other entertainment on the pedestrian mall.

Like last year, this year’s fest began the weekend prior to Thanksgiving. The switch-on ceremony was held Saturday afternoon and was be presided over by Mission Inn Hotel & Spa owner Duane Roberts, members of the Riverside City Council and other guests.

Prior to 2023, the ceremonies were traditionally held the day after Thanksgiving, but according to organizers, there’s now an emphasis on getting a head start on the season’s activities.

Last year’s switch-on drew thousands of spectators. This year’s event included a free concert, featuring Matt Mauser & The Tijuana Dogs, as well as Richard Goodall, winner of the 2024 “America’s Got Talent” contest.

2024 Festival of Lights switch-on ceremony

There were fireworks, musical performances and light shows as the Mission Inn kicked off its annual Festival of Lights.

This was the fest’s 32nd anniversary.

Roberts, who inaugurated the tradition in 1992, said in 2023 that the festival consistently draws up to 500,000 visitors over a one-month span, “all thrilled to watch the display come to life through the Holidays.”

Switch-on events were rescinded in November 2020 and November 2021. The 2020 event was prohibited because of the COVID lockdowns, and the city council decided to forgo the 2021 switch-on as a precautionary measure. The ceremony got back on track in 2022.

The nightly fest features the century-old inn bathed in multi-colored hues, with hundreds of animated characters, including elves, toy soldiers, nutcrackers and angels visible on banisters, balconies and ledges.

Towering Christmas trees and wooden soldiers traditionally line the way outside and into the hotel, where visitors also encounter a mistletoe measuring 12-by-8 feet.

Ice skating is slated to be available on the Main Street pedestrian mall, and at the corner of Mission Inn Avenue and Lime Street, a Ferris wheel will be in operation. Carolers sometimes make appearances around the hotel.

There will be live musical entertainment weekly, photos with Santa Claus, as well as artisan booths and food vendors up and down the mall. The city festoons light standards and other municipal property with displays and lights.

City spokesman Phil Pitchford told City News Service roughly $1.5 million in municipal funds were allocated for this year’s fest, compared to about $1 million in 2023.

Although festivities will stop on Dec. 31, the lights are slated to stay on through the first week of January.

Overall, three 16-year-olds were identified to be responsible for causing the devastating brush fire.

Two teenagers were arrested for igniting the Hawarden Fire that destroyed several homes in the city of Riverside in July while another minor faced “serious charges,” officials confirmed Thursday.

Two of the 16-year-olds were taken into custody earlier on Thursday, Riverside Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson said, adding the brush fire, which destroyed seven homes and damaged 18 others, was caused by illegal use of fireworks.

“(The fire) caused immeasurable levels of fear among the residents who were rightly afraid for their safety,” Dawson said. “All fireworks are illegal in the city of Riverside for a reason.”

The two arrested teens were booked into a juvenile detention facilities while the other suspect would face charges out of Riverside County, the mayor explained.

Officials did not disclose the teens’ gender, schools and other details due to their age.

The Hawarden Fire, which was first reported at around 1 p.m. on July 21 as temperatures reached over 100 degrees with moderate winds.

The fire, which scorched over 600 acres, cost the city at least $1.5 million in response while the damages to the homes are estimated to be about $28 million, officials said.

Investigators said video footage showed the suspects running away in a silver pickup truck as soon as the fireworks went off.

“After canvassing the neighborhood, investigators located the silver pickup and subsequently identified three individuals as 16-year-old juveniles,” Chief Larry Gonzalez with the Riverside Police Department said. “Search warrants were obtained and served at their homes where electronic devices were seized as part of this investigation as well.”

While the fire was put contained about eight days later, those who lost their properties continue to suffer in the aftermath.

“To those who lost their homes, we pray for you. We can’t imagine the emotional stress you’ve gone through,” Riverside City Councilmember Chuck Condor said. “To those who had minor damage or no damage, you still suffered tremendous emotional scars. It’s hard for me to imagine what you all thought that day.”

INLAND EMPIRE, CA—Firefighters across the Inland Empire battled blazes on multiple fronts late Thursday as the 4th of July fireworks revelry lasted into the night. Hot, dry weather contributed to fires that ignited quickly amid dry brush, low humidity, and near-record heat.

According to the National Weather Service, a long-duration heat wave has settled over the Inland Empire and will last through next week. The NWS predicted Saturday was the hottest day, with highs 5 to 15 degrees above normal. Relative humidity has dropped to 10 to 15 percent, making the air tinder dry and inciting a Fire Weather watch, as the NWS forecasts extreme conditions for another week.

In the Inland Empire, the image of fireworks igniting beyond the smoke and glow of a brittle-dry field captured the difficulty firefighters face.

Just after 8:15 p.m. in San Bernardino, fireworks ignited a palm tree, sending it up in flames “like a Roman candle!” one commenter said of the captured on-camera scene.

“Fireworks start early around here,” Fire photographer @FirePhotoGirl wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “I can barely keep up.”

In Riverside County, blazes sparked from Cabazon to Coachella.

Just before 10 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a burning single-wide mobile home in Cabazon. According to officials, the blaze was quelled just a half hour later, and the fire would be investigated.

Cal Fire said a fire burned 17 acres in Perris Thursday, igniting around noon, near the intersection of Goetz and Sotelo Roads. Air and ground resources battled the blaze, and no structures were damaged. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

In Moreno Valley, a fire that began around 7 p.m. in a difficult-to-reach area near Nason Street and Dracaea Avenue bloomed from 7 to 60 acres overnight, a Cal Fire spokesperson said. The blaze reached full containment by 9 a.m. Friday morning.

In Coachella, a commercial building on Grapefruit Boulevard and 9th Street caught fire for unidentified reasons, a Cal Fire said. That building was well involved by 10:15 p.m., as firefighters arrived. Cal Fire managed to get that blaze under control in just over an hour, though they remained at the scene putting out hot spots.

Meanwhile, in places like Beaumont, the city opted for a different take on a citywide fireworks show, with a drone show instead. Hundreds gathered to see the view of colorful drones changing shapes and creating visuals filled with patriotic and civic pride.

Due to the after-effects of July 4th fireworks, the South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued a special advisory for particle pollution that is leading to hazardous conditions in some areas on Friday, July 5.

The agency said that fireworks emissions from Independence Day celebrations often lead to the worst air-quality days of the entire year.

The advisory, which covers parts of Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties, will be in effect until 11:59 p.m. Friday.

Some areas were experiencing air quality at the Moderate AQI (Air Quality Index) level at 9 a.m. Friday, including much of the South Bay and Orange County.

At that same time, the air quality in many areas of Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley, the San Gabriel Valley and the Inland Empire ranged from Unhealthy AQI to Hazardous.

The worst area — experiencing Hazardous air quality — on Friday morning was the area surrounding Glendora and Azusa and parts of West Covina heading toward the mountains. Just outside of that area, including Pomona, Montclair, Claremont, Duarte and Arcadia, the air quality was measured as Very Unhealthy.

Air quality Friday morning was also Very Unhealthy in the eastern San Fernando Valley, Burbank and Glendale areas.

Most of LA, the rest of the San Gabriel Valley and the Inland Empire as far east as Redlands was experiencing air quality that was either Unhealthy, or Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.

The particles emitted by fireworks, including “backyard” fireworks, include metal air pollutants, the AQMD said, causing even more hazardous conditions.

And “backyard” fireworks can lead to even higher levels of fine particulate matter in the neighborhoods where they were launched, leading to even worse air quality that is being measured by AQMD’s regional equipment, the agency said.

The fireworks particles add to the other particles in the Southern California basin from vehicles and industrial uses. In addition, high ozone levels unrelated to July 4th celebrations will decrease air quality — leading to the Very Unhealthy AQI level in the afternoon and evening.

The AQMD warns that people’s cardiovascular and respiratory health suffers when breathing in fine particulate matter. Negative health effects can include heart attacks, worsened asthma, decreased lung function, coughing and difficulty breathing and even “premature death” in those suffering from heart or lung disease.

The air-quality-monitoring agency recommends remaining indoors with doors and windows closed, avoiding vigorous physical activity, and running air conditioners and air purifiers.

Tens of thousands of people in northern California have been told to leave their homesas wildfires grow across the state during a heatwave.

About 28,000 people were under evacuation warnings or orders on Thursday after the Thompson fire broke out two days earlier, according to California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire).

Dangerously hot weather is expected to continue with temperatures of 118F (47C) forecast in some areas until early next week.

No one has died, while 74 structures across the state have been destroyed or damaged.

The city of Oroville, near where the Thompson fire started, cancelled its 4 July Independence Day fireworks celebration over the risk of starting another blaze.

Reuters | Contributed

“The last thing we need is somebody who’s purchased fireworks from a local fire stand going out and doing something stupid,” Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said. “Don’t be an idiot, cause a fire and create more problems for us.”

Mr Honea said the area had seen four fires within the last couple of weeks and cautioned that danger was far from over.

“This is a bad fire season,” he added.

Fire season started recently in California and usually runs until October. The size and intensity of fires in the state have grown in recent years.

The amount of burned areas in the summer in northern and central California increased five times from 1996 to 2021 compared to the 24 year period before, which scientists attributed to human-caused climate change.

This week, the National Weather Service issued excessive heat and red flag warnings – indicating hot, dry and windy weather – across the state. The agency said “dangerous” temperatures posed a major to extreme risk of heat stress or illnesses.

According to CalFire, around two dozen fires have burned more than 10 acres sparked across the state since the last week of June. The largest one, at nearly 14,000 acres, was in Fresno county.

California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Butte County to provide resources.

The Thompson fire started in Oroville, about 70 miles north of the state capital Sacramento, on Tuesday. The city is around 20 miles from Paradise, which was devastated by the Camp Fire in 2018 that killed 85 people. Fires hit the region again in the years following.

Some 28,000 people were impacted by evacuation orders or warnings as of Thursday, CalFire spokesman Robert Foxworthy told the BBC. The fire was around 3,500 acres and only 7% contained.

He said the fire was no longer growing amid lighter wind speeds, but the heat – which was predicted to hit 110F (43C) on Thursday – was the “biggest factor” impacting firefighters.

Two days after the fire broke out, many residents remained unable to return home.

Brittanie Hardie, a Louisiana native and recent California transplant, told the San Francisco Chronicle that she had not been at home when her girlfriend evacuated their flat, and had nothing but the clothes she was wearing.

“I knew wildfires were bad in California, but I didn’t know it was this bad,” Hardie told the newspaper.

Oroville City Council member Shawn Webber posted a video on Facebook on Wednesday showing hillsides smoking on both sides of a road, but thanked firefighters for preventing further destruction.

California’s state parks system said agencies responding to the fire “also have employees with families displaced by these evacuations who are tirelessly assisting the community of Lake Oroville”.

Millions of people in the U.S. celebrated and suffered under heat warnings as they flocked to beaches and traveled in droves to toast their nation’s birth with July 4 parades, cookouts and the always anticipated fiery splashes of color in the evening sky.

Travel records were projected to fall with people jamming airports and crowding highways to reach Thursday’s Independence Day celebrations, which will stretch into a long weekend for many.

On the East Coast, some would-be beachgoers in Connecticut were turned away as parking at state parks along the shore filled to capacity, including a 2-mile (3 kilometer) stretch at Hammonasset Beach State Park — the state’s largest shoreline beach.

Across the West, meanwhile, residents dealt with stifling heat as the National Weather Service warned of a “significant and extremely dangerous” heat wave across much of the region.

A heat advisory in Philadelphia that came with temperatures tipping into the 90s didn’t stop crowds from gathering at historic sites in the city where the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776.

Outside the National Constitution Center, volunteer actors dressed in Revolutionary War-era costume made of heavy wool, despite the heat. Participants said it was worth it.

“It keeps you connected to your neighborhood and where you live,” said Adrian Mercado, who was donning a 6th Pennsylvania Regiment uniform.

Evening fireworks were scheduled over the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, after a concert by NE-YO and Kesha.

Fireworks crackled in backyard displays and an anticipated 16,000 professional shows were planned to light up the horizon from sea to shining sea.

“This is how we celebrate. It’s the bombs bursting in air. It’s the rockets’ red glare. That’s how people show their pride and patriotism,” said Julie Heckman of the American Pyrotechnics Association.

All signs pointed to big celebrations: The Transportation Security Administration reported that a record of nearly 3 million people traveled through airports in a single day last week, a figure expected to be broken this week. AAA projected that 60.6 million people will travel by car during the holiday period. Part of the boost was attributed to easing inflation, though many Americans remain concerned about the economy.

On much of the West Coast, residents were advised to take precautions to avoid overheating on the holiday.

Temperatures were expected to top 100 degrees (38 degrees Celsius) across both coastal and inland areas of California, with heat spreading into the Pacific Northwest. Some spots in the desert Southwest were expecting temperatures topping 120 degrees (49 degrees Celsius). Hot, muggy conditions also permeated the Deep South and Middle Atlantic.

The Northern California city of Oroville’s annual fireworks were canceled as an estimated 17,000 residents remained under evacuation orders or warnings by the Thompson Fire, while hundreds of firefighters toiled under extreme heat to keep flames from reaching more homes.

In suburban Chicago, Highland Park resumed its annual Independence Day Parade on the second anniversary of a mass shooting that took seven lives and injured dozens at the 2022 event. Residents gathered at a middle school for a remembrance Thursday before the holiday march, which followed a different route than in the past.

“July Fourth is always going to be a day of mixed emotion,” Mayor Nancy Rotering said. “We come forth today hoping we as a community can remember and honor the lives lost.”

The holiday celebrating the establishment a new country free from British rule, is traditionally marked by barbecue, cold drinks and the Stars and Stripes on flagpoles and on clothing, in addition to parades. But Americans were also celebrating in other ways unique to their communities.

Of course, there was the annual hot dog eating contest on New York’s Coney Island — where a new champion chomper emerged. Patrick Bertoletti of Chicago gobbled down 58 hot dogs to win his first men’s title.

In Alaska, the city of Seward got a head start with a fireworks display at midnight, as thousands of people gathered on a rocky beach to watch during the brief window where the sky dims in the land of the midnight sun. The shells burst over Resurrection Bay as people watched in silence. “It was absolutely magical,” said resident Iris Woolfolk.

The July Fourth holiday generally unites Americans in their shared love of country, but the 2024 version comes against a backdrop of deep political polarization and a divisive presidential race.

In Boston, where tens of thousands were expected to enjoy the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, conductor Keith Lockhart said it’s inspiring to see people of different political stripes gather on Charles River Esplanade. But he noted that “one would have to have one’s head pretty deeply stuck in the sand to not notice the deep divisions in our country.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Air quality advisories were in effect Monday across a swath of Southern California due to hours of fireworks blasts and a wildfire north of Los Angeles.

The South Coast Air Quality District said poor air quality was likely through the afternoon because fireworks emit high levels of particulate matter.

The smell of smoke infused the overnight intrusion of damp marine air over the region.

“June Gloom continues its tight grip on Southern California early this morning despite the turn of the calendar,” the National Weather Service said.

July 4 and 5 are typically the worst days of the year for levels of fine particulate matter in the South Coast Air Basin. Breathing particulates can lead to a wide variety of cardiovascular and respiratory health effects.

A smoke advisory was also in effect due to the Tumbleweed Fire burning in mountains near Interstate 5 and the community of Gorman about 60 miles (96.56 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

Areas adjacent to the fire were expected to experience the highest concentrations of pollutants.

by Tracy Bloom

A dog who bolted from her Riverside home after apparently being spooked by fireworks celebrating the Lakers’ championship was rescued after being trapped beneath the house for two days, officials said Wednesday.

The frightened senior Labrador fled Sunday night after fireworks exploded in the neighborhood a short time after the team’s title-clinching victory over the Miami Heat in Game 6 of the NBA finals, according to the Riverside County Department of Animal Services.

Her family feared the dog, named Midnight, was long gone when they discovered she was missing.

But on Tuesday, the family heard her whimpering from underneath their home in the 3400 block of Franklin Avenue, where — unbeknownst to them — she had been stuck for two days, according to a news release from the department.

Midnight became jammed under a wood beam beneath the kitchen after leaping through a screen and nestling herself as far away from the opening as possible during the fireworks display.

“It was as if she had burrowed a spot for herself, but she had actually entrapped herself,” Animal Services Officer Michael Cox, who was called out to retrieve the pooch, said in the release. “That’s the magnitude of just how scared she was from the fireworks.”

Cox was initially uncertain if he’d be able to fit through the small opening, but managed to get into the crawl space. Still, the dog was initially resistant to his help, using her front paws to hold on to a beam as Cox tried to free her.

At one point, a family member joined the officer in the crawl space to make Midnight feel comfortable. That individual managed to push the dog and help the officer pull her — “inch by inch” — to safety, the release stated.

“It took us a few minutes, and there was a lot of dirt kicked around,” Cox said. “Even with flashlights, the visibility was very low. But the good news is we were finally able to nudge her from her spot and she crawled out of the hole into the arms of her very relieved and happy family.”

The dog was not injured.

(Fireworks show)

The Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians teamed up with Valley-Wide Recreation and Park District to put on a fireworks show that lit up the San Jacinto Valley skies – and computer screens for those that livestreamed it. Both entities are well known for their annual spectacular pyrotechnic displays but due to COVID-19 limits on public gatherings, things were done differently this year.

“Having the restrictions has been challenging in trying to coordinate the show,” Soboba Tribal Administrator Michael Castello said. “Our goal from the beginning has been to provide the tribe and community an event that everyone can enjoy but always maintain the safest environment possible.”

Soboba tribal members could watch the show in person from the comfort of their cars or tailgates in the parking lot of the old casino. Only a certain number of entry tickets were provided, and check-in was done at an access gate near the Soboba Fire Station to ensure the crowd didn’t get too large. No amenities, such as food vendors, were allowed as in years past. About 40 vehicles containing upwards of 150 people attended in person.

Valley-Wide staff and personnel from Hemet Eye News were at the Soboba Reservation site to transmit the nearly 20-minute show over Valley-Wide’s Facebook and Instragram pages. There were more 13,000 views on all social media platforms, according to Valley-Wide’s Public Information Officer Craig Shultz.

“This is the first time we have livestreamed an event,” he said. “We have provided a free fireworks show in the San Jacinto Valley since 1976, drawing upwards of 15,000 visitors each year. And even though we couldn’t invite people to our park this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we still wanted to provide a show.”

In the past, revenue from vendors at Valley-Wide’s Regional Park helped offset some of the costs that won’t be incurred this year, such as police and portable restrooms.

“The cost of the fireworks comes from the generosity of our Board of Directors, who forgo any compensation for serving with those funds going toward special events,” Shultz said. “Partnering with Soboba was an easy decision. The Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians have been great partners over the years and the Soboba Foundation was recently honored as the Outstanding Community Organization/Partner in the California Association of Recreation and Park District’s annual Awards of Distinction Program for its work with Valley-Wide Recreation and Park District. The Outstanding Community Organization/Partner Award honors any public or private club, special interest group, or public agency that has made a significant contribution to a District recreation or park program.”

The show was operated by Pyro Spectaculars by Souza, which has been the Valley-Wide vendor for fireworks since 1976. Shultz said Pyro Spectaculars is one of the few remaining fireworks professionals who light fireworks by hand.

Soboba tribal member Antonia Venegas and her extended family arrived about 7:30 p.m. in six different vehicles to find a good spot for the show.

“There were about 25 of us all together, including kids,” Venegas said.

In the past when the tribe has held fireworks’ shows at its sports complex she said it was too crowded, so her family would watch from the nearby church parking lot. She said it was really nice this year to be able to get up close and personal to the action with all the space that was available for parking while still being able to safely social distance from others.

Earlier in the day, 3,000 flags were placed at the Soboba Casino Resort to honor veterans, first responders and active duty military personnel who have served their country. As the celebration and commemoration of this nation’s independence, those who protect our freedoms – past and present – were honored by this show of patriotism. Casino guests were invited to plant two-foot high flags around the exterior of the buildings and received a goodie bag full of patriotic items in return, as well as a $10 free slot play voucher.

“As all of us know, due to the pandemic so many events have been postponed or canceled, including holiday celebrations, birthday parties, graduation ceremonies and more,” Castello said. “The Tribe felt this would be a great opportunity to provide something to the community that is a safe but fun event that families can enjoy.”
