Residents across the Temecula Valley are coming together to support a local teenager who was seriously injured in a weekend accident, with an outpouring of donations and well-wishes from the community.

Family members confirmed that the teen was hospitalized following the incident and is currently undergoing treatment. While specific details about the accident have not been publicly released, loved ones say the recovery process is expected to be lengthy and will require ongoing medical care and rehabilitation.

In response, friends and relatives launched an online fundraiser to help ease the financial burden associated with medical expenses, travel, and time away from work. Within days, the effort gained traction, drawing support from neighbors, classmates, and even strangers moved by the family’s situation.

“The support has been overwhelming,” a family member shared. “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has reached out, donated, or kept our family in their thoughts.”

Local schools have also stepped in to provide support, offering counseling services to students affected by the news and encouraging messages of unity and compassion.

Community members have taken to social media to share updates, organize meal trains, and coordinate additional ways to assist the family during this difficult time.

Officials reminded residents to remain mindful of safety, particularly in busy areas where pedestrians and vehicles frequently intersect. While investigations into similar incidents are ongoing throughout the region, authorities emphasize the importance of awareness and caution for both drivers and pedestrians.

As the teen continues the road to recovery, the community’s response stands as a reminder of how quickly people can come together in times of need.

Those wishing to support the family are encouraged to look for verified fundraising efforts and continue sharing messages of encouragement as recovery efforts move forward.

BY BRIAN SLODYSKO, AAMER MADHANI AND COLLEEN LONG

NEW YORK (AP) — President Joe Biden on Monday told a packed Broadway theater full of big-name stars hosting a fundraiser in his honor that he was running for reelection because Donald Trump was determined to destroy the nation.

Democracy is at stake, he told the audience at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater. Hate groups have been emboldened, he said. Books are being banned. Children go to school fearing shootings.

“Let there be no question, Donald Trump and his MAGA Republicans are determined to destroy American democracy,” he said, referring to the former president’s slogan, “Make America Great Again.” “And I will always defend, protect and fight for our democracy.”

Biden also accused Trump and his allies of bowing down to authoritarians: “I will not side with dictators like Putin. Maybe Trump and his MAGA friends can bow down but I won’t.”

It was the among the president’s strongest rebukes of the Republican front-runner and former president, who is facing criminal charges for his role in the effort to overturn the 2020 election. And it comes as the political pressure is ramping up from Republicans in the House who have opened an impeachment inquiry into Biden in an effort to tie him to his son Hunter’s business dealings and distract from Trump’s legal peril.

Biden said he wanted to send the “strongest and most powerful message possible, that political violence in America is never never never acceptable.”

Biden, who is set to address the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, arrived in New York on Sunday evening so he could squeeze in the fundraisers as the end of the quarter for federal election reporting nears.

A Times Square billboard not far from the concert advertised “Broadway for Biden.” Sara Bareilles, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Ben Platt were among those appearing on behalf of the president.

By turning to the New York theater community — overseen and contracted by the Actors’ Equity Association, whose some 51,000 American actors and stage managers remain on the job — Biden avoided Hollywood and the strike by members of the Writers Guild of America and actors from SAG-AFTRA.

Both Biden and first lady Jill Biden attended the event, with tickets ranging from $250 to $7,500. Biden also took part in a private fundraiser in Manhattan hosted by the Black Economic Alliance.

Biden walked on stage to the showstopper “All That Jazz,” and spoke about how when his sons were little they’d head up to New York twice a year to catch a show. Once, they brought their boys to see Bette Midler, whose act wasn’t exactly known to be family-friendly, and she singled them out.

“Who would bring two kids to a show like this?” she asked, according to Biden. It prompted a round of raucous laughter.

“My boys used that as a badge of courage,” he said. “Bette Midler picked us out of a crowd. … Families all over the world have memories like that to cherish.”

Biden was introduced by Jeffrey Seller, a theater producer best known for his work on “Rent,” “In the Heights” and “Hamilton.”

“President Biden, I am here to pledge to you that we in this theater — all 1,500 strong of us — are your warriors, are your troops in ensuring that we maintain, affirm and nurture the soul of our democracy and the soul of our nation,” Seller said, echoing a phrase Biden often invokes when he’s talking about why he’s running for reelection.

The event was full of performances by Tony-winning stars, but only the remarks by the president and Seller were open to the press.

Southern California, the home of extraordinary wealth and the engine of the film and television industry, has historically served as an ATM for the Democratic Party.

Since at least Bill Clinton, Democratic presidents have cultivated intimate ties with powerful figures in the Hollywood entertainment industry. Biden himself raised roughly $1 million during an early 2020 campaign fundraiser at the home of Michael Smith and James Costos, a former HBO executive. That event was attended by former DreamWorks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg, now a Biden campaign co-chair.

The ongoing actors and writers strike has ground that to a halt, at least for now. Writers have been on strike for 4 1/2 months over issues including pay, job security and regulating the use of artificial intelligence. SAG-AFTRA members went on strike on July 14.

Biden is the most vocally pro-union president in decades, and is mindful of staying on the right side of labor, a key constituency. As long as the strike goes on, he has been advised by Katzenberg to steer clear, according to three people with direct knowledge of the guidance who insisted on anonymity to discuss internal planning details.

Biden has kept a tepid fundraising schedule since announcing his reelection campaign in April, worrying some donors who believe the president needs to start stockpiling massive amounts of cash now for the brutal campaign that lies ahead. Still, campaign officials say they are raising plenty of money during big-dollar events –- just not anywhere near Los Angeles.

“Joe Biden is the most pro-labor president that I can recall in my lifetime. He is true to his word on that,” said Chris Korge, who serves a dual role as finance chairman of the Democratic National Committee and the Biden Victory Fund, the chief fundraising committee for Biden’s reelection. “The president will decide when is the right time to go, but it’s not impacting our fundraising ability at all.”

Some Biden allies worry that time is wasting. And they note Biden could still raise money from southern California donors who are not affiliated with the entertainment industry.

Even that could prove perilous. The potential of a picket line forming outside the gates of a multimillion-dollar home would present made-for-TV fodder that would only serve to underscore the reality that even a pro-labor president must raise cash from wealthy tycoons who have far more in common with Hollywood studio heads than rank-and-file union members.

Biden and the DNC raised more than $72 million for his reelection in the 10 weeks after he announced his 2024 candidacy, his campaign announced in July. It was a strong but not record performance by an incumbent.

Trump’s campaign raised more than $35 million for his White House bid during the second fundraising quarter, nearly double what he raised during the first three months of the year. Trump remains the GOP front-runner despite facing indictments in four different jurisdictions.

Biden will turn his attention to diplomacy on Tuesday and Wednesday at the annual gathering of world leaders at the U.N. After his Wednesday diplomatic engagements, Biden will squeeze in two more fundraisers in New York before returning to Washington.

Rusty Strait | Senior Reporter

The Ramona Pageant is preparing for its 100th-year anniversary in the spring and the place is buzzing with preparations. Helen Hunt Jackson’s novel, “Ramona,’ is one of the most celebrated times in American history. It delineates how the local tribes were mistreated by the priests and carpetbaggers from the East. The play explicitly depicts Ramona and Alessandro’s forbidden love affair.

Thousands of guests from all over the world have made their way from around the world to witness this classic play year after year after year. This year may or may not find a filled arena, not because of visitors, but the community has taken a somewhat lackadaisical attitude this year.

Example: Dattilo Ristorante is hosting a fundraiser to assist in funding this year’s production on Saturday, November 12th. Dinner and an original murder mystery play will be featured. The play, “Murder, Menu!” is an original creation by Hailey Jones, starring Hailey Jones and Friends. I cannot give away the plot because I’m limited to what I’ve been made aware of. I can tell you that the audience will decide who did what and why and how the verdict should be. If that doesn’t whet your appetite, the cuisine will. It is one for the palate and one for the senses.

From the announcement date until now, something has happened that isn’t good. It was initially announced that there would be two shows, one at 3 PM for those who prefer afternoons or simply don’t like to drive after dark and another for folks who like nightlife at 6 PM. I was just advised that the afternoon show has been canceled for lack of interest. Hemet – how could you be so cruel to your primary reason for Hemet to be recognized anywhere much less around the country and the world. Shame on you San Jacinto Valley.

Even Hollywood is coming out to this dinner and show. The ever-popular actress Gail O’ Grady (she prefers “actor,”) is taking time away from her starring role in television’s “Criminal Minds” to come and support our beautiful outdoor play. If Hemet is failing, Hollywood isn’t.

All too often, as I’ve said many times in my columns, we don’t appreciate what we have until we no longer have it. Without the Ramona Play, Hemet won’t be known for much.

For those attending the fundraiser, see below:

Reporting Deputy: Sergeant David Marshall

File # PE222860063

Details:

Recently, deputies from the Perris Station, have fielded numerous complaints from community members about subjects using signs to solicit money at the intersection of Perris Boulevard and Nuevo Road in the city of Perris. These subjects had either been soliciting money for a sick child or to help with funeral expenses for a loved one.

On October 13, 2022, the Perris Station Problem Oriented Policing Team responded to that intersection and conducted an investigation in regards to subjects soliciting money for a funeral, standing in the center median, and running into traffic. During the investigation, it was determined the deceased individual listed on the sign was fictitious, and there was no funeral at all. Three juveniles, ages 17, 14, and 13, were detained for soliciting and theft by false pretenses, and later released. The sign used, as well as the money collected by the subjects, were seized.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department discourages residents from donating money to anyone with a homemade sign seeking money because, in most instances, it is a scam. If anyone sees a solicitor with a sign, they are encouraged to report it to the Riverside Sheriff’s Department or their local police department.

The formal invitation from the Ramona Humane Society to a 2021 No Year’s Eve Party reads: “You’re Invited to….Stay Home!” In what it touts as its first, and hopefully last, socially distanced party, the nonprofit animal shelter is requesting donations in lieu of what would have been spent on an admission ticket. The non-event is being held whenever and wherever “guests” wish.

The fundraiser to celebrate animals by not celebrating in person is the brainstorm of RHS Board Vice Chairman Wayne Disher, who has served on its board of directors for more than 10 years. “The idea came to me in a conversation I was having with several of our board members about possible fundraising ideas,” Disher said. “We were all saddened that we were not able to have our annual Bow Wow Meow Luau – which generated such critical funds for the animal shelter. As we were throwing out potential ideas, I noted that all the ideas they were offering required people to come together for a live gathering.” Since mass gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic are not allowed, he said the next logical step was to try and think of ideas that would generate critical funds but would not require crowds getting together. A discussion about hosting a virtual event came about and a possible Zoom meeting for New Year’s Eve. “And my brain just went, ‘You mean NO Year’s Eve’?” Disher said. “The more I thought about it, the more I thought we could market a non-event to help us raise funds. It took some clever thinking, but the result was offering people the opportunity to stay home and be safe but still help animals by donating the money they’d save by not going to an event to help animals.”

Revenue expected from this past summer’s Bow Wow Meow Luau was severely missed as it typically generates, on average, between $25,000 to $35,000 in ticket sales, donations, auctions and beverage sales. That loss was not the only hardship RHS has faced during the closures and restrictions brought about by COVID-19. “While adoptions and spay and neutering can be done, other work in the community has been suspended,” Disher said. “But the biggest challenge is funding – as all our events have been cancelled and we are now heavily relying on donations. Because our community and citizens are facing financial crises of their own, they are not able to offer donations right now. Since all our in-person fundraising events have had to be cancelled, our revenue is down almost 50% this year and so we are struggling to help as many animals as we can while watching our funds dwindle to critical lows.”

Disher said that at the beginning of the pandemic in early spring, animal shelters were not considered essential and RHS had to layoff and furlough all but 25% of its staff as a result. Hours were reduced at both the shelter and the spay/neuter clinic. After the first lockdown implementation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reclassified animal shelters as essential and some staff were brought back, and some hours were reinstated. While not completely back to normal levels, RHS shelter hours and the spay/neuter clinic have bounced back.

“As the shelter does not receive funding from federal, state, or local tax revenue, funds generated from our events are critical in purchasing daily operational supplies such as cat and dog food, cat litter, and medical supplies for animals who come into the shelter,” Disher said. “We are also able to receive sponsorships from our events from organizations such as the Soboba Foundation and Banner Bank. We recently received a grant from the Soboba Foundation to help us take care of animals needing critical care.”

All animals available for adoption can be viewed at www.ramonahumanesociety.org/available-animals/ and can be met in person by scheduling an appointment. All shelter visits are by appointment only because of COVID-19 precautions but can be scheduled by calling the shelter at (951) 654-8002.

Information, www.ramonahumanesociety.org. Donations can also be made online or by texting 2021 to 951-309-7607.
