Tigers Hunting Down Hawks In Week 9

San Jacinto High School (SJHS) will take the trip to Perris as the Tigers seek to hunt down some Hawks. San Jacinto is fresh off a victory over their rival, the Hemet High Bulldogs. San Jacinto dominated the matchup 28-5, with Hemet’s only points coming off a safety and a field goal. San Jacinto is currently on a four-game win streak and are undefeated in league. Right now they are ranked 84th in the state. The have the highest ranking in the league and are holding on to that number one spot. San Jacinto has to have this game circled on their schedule: if they are able to win this one, they will only be one win away from going undefeated in the league. 

Citrus Hill is coming off a tough game against West Valley where they barely pulled out a victory against the Mustangs. Citrus Hill has a 7-1 record on the year and are 2-1 in league play. Their only loss was in the first week of league against a Hemet High team that dominated them defensively and kicked a 35 yard game winning field goal. This game between San Jacinto & Citrus Hill will be one to watch.  If San Jacinto can pull out the win, they essentially clinch the league title and a playoff spot. If they lose, their future is questionable–most likely they will finish second or third in the league and their playoff chances will be up to a coin flip. This game is the definition of a “must win” for San Jacinto.

West Valley (ranked 539 in state) is hosting Beaumont (ranked 196) this week. Beaumont will come into this game thinking that this is an easy win, but West Valley showed last week that they can play with the best of them, containing Citrus Hill to only 14 points. West Valley is going to need to come out and play like they did last week to silence their doubters. This is a big opportunity for them to finish their season on a high note by taking away Beaumont’s playoff hopes.

Hemet travels across the city to play against Tahquitz for the Ramona Cup. Both teams are fresh off a loss and need to get back in the win column in order to keep their playoff dreams alive. This is Tahquitz’s last home game of the season. Tahquitz is coming into the game ranked 562 and they still don’t have their head coach. Hemet is going to be hungry after losing the last Battle of the Bell: they are coming into the game ranked 271.  This is Hemet’s game to lose and they better win if they want to get into the playoffs.

Tigers seeking to prey on Mustangs this week

After a crazy, hectic previous week, some teams in the Mountain Pass league will look to keep up the momentum while others will seek to get back into the win column. In our “Game of the Week” we will take you to San Jacinto High School as the West Valley Mustangs come into town and try to take SJ down.

Historically San Jacinto has dominated this matchup.  

San Jacinto is currently ranked 129 in the state. They have dropped quite a bit from the beginning of the season when their ranking was 97: currently they have a 4-2 record and are fresh off a dominant victory against Beaumont.

West Valley started the year with a 2-0 record, but have struggled since. Currently they are on a four-game losing streak coming off a tough loss against Tahquitz where they basically beat themselves.

One of West Valley’s key playmakers, Alfred Jones, went down with a possibly significant injury last week: it is unknown if he will be available for this matchup. The West Valley Mustangs are definitely playing the underdog role this week. Many players are going to have to have the game of their lives and hope that San Jacinto struggles to find chemistry.

West Valley is a good team, but they have half as many players as San Jacinto.  That imbalance has many disadvantages: players get tired more easily as they have no one to sub for them; if injuries occur, it gets harder and harder to keep key players in the game. Many West Valley players have to play on both sides of the ball.  As the season goes on, the challenge to maintain mounts with each game. Last season West Valley dominated the matchup 49-0.

(Competition is starting)

Hemet is traveling up to Beaumont.  Hemet is fresh off their amazing victory over Citrus Hill. They have all the momentum and energy on their side going into this matchup against Beaumont. Beaumont seemed poised to finish at the top of the league until they ran into the San Jacinto Tigers last week: the Tigers brought them back to reality. Beaumont will be looking to rebound off of their week six lost and re-assert themselves amongst the best in the division. The last time Hemet and Beaumont played each other Hemet left the game the victors winning 25-14.  Even though this is a different team, Hemet will hope to have a similar performance.

Citrus Hill is hosting Tahquitz this week. Citrus is fresh off a loss against Hemet High, getting beaten by a field goal. Tahquitz is in a position to reap the consequences of that crushing loss. Citrus Hill doesn’t believe a team like Hemet should have ever beaten them. Hemet is a Division 11 team with a brand new QB; their offense and defense have been inconsistent for the majority of the year, showing flashes of brilliance at times, but they’ve struggled to get things going as of late. Citrus Hill is a Division 5 school with a huge roster and talent pool to match, which means they should have a huge advantage over schools like Division 11 Hemet.

Division 13 Tahquitz is the Dark Horse in the league. They certainly have the potential to play competitive games against the upper echelon, but they have a tendency to beat themselves by making silly mistakes.

Bulldogs are victorious in their last game of the season

Hemet High hosted Redlands High last Friday night. Redlands received the ball and scored on their first drive with a rushing touchdown from Adam Valencia (Senior Running Back), after that initial touchdown, it was a defensive ball game. Both teams took turns punting the ball and going for it on fourth down — a back and forth defensive game to its core. At the end of the first half, Hemet made it down the field and within 15 yards of a touchdown. With time running down, Coach Gregovich decided to trust their Senior Kicker Asaiah Aguliar to kick a field goal and give them some points going into the half.

The Bulldogs offensive line couldn’t maintain their blocks and let Redlands through leading to Asaiah’s kick being blocked as time ran out. The score going into the half was 0-7 Hemet needed to make adjustments. Specifically, they needed their Quarterback to start making plays. It was Homecoming week for the Bulldogs; there was a cool Beauty and the Beast Display and a beautiful firework performance when they announced who the Homecoming Queen was. When the show was over, it was time to get back to football. Jeremiah Graves came out of the half, ready to play football. He started to make solid throws to his receivers and extend plays by scrambling out of the pocket. He seemed to live up to what his coaching staff knows he is capable of. 

The stands were full of Spectators that included; Faculty, Parents/Grandparents, Students, Alumni, and a few visitors from rival teams. The San Jacinto Tigers coaching staff was at the game. Since it was their bye-week, they saw it as a good opportunity to scout out the Bulldogs before the Battle of the Bell. A bunch of San Jacinto’s football players were also in the stands, and they made their presence known by chanting, “SJ” when the game was going on — definitely adding fuel to the fire for when they make the trip down to Hemet later this season. West Valley was also at the game, a few players and coaches in the stands. They didn’t travel quite as deep as SJ.

Jeremiah Graves ran for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter, this time the snap was bad and the holder wasn’t able to get it in position, Asaiah Aguilar called the kick-off and told the holder to go, he scrambled out of to the far side of the field and fought until he crossed the end zone line. The 2-point conversion was a success. In the Fourth Quarter, Jeremiah Graves ran for another touchdown, this time the kick was good. Hemet’s defense came up in a big way this game, containing the Redlands offense and even securing a Safety. The game would finish 17-7 With Hemet celebrating a Home victory on Homecoming.
