The 11th annual Soboba Foundation & Soboba Casino Resort Charity Golf Tournament will provide area nonprofits with $10,000 each to continue their worthwhile endeavors. While most organizations have a specific project in mind for the funds, others are looking to continue offering much-needed scholarships to youths and others who don’t have the financial means to participate in educational and recreational programs.

One of those nonprofits is the San Jacinto Mountain Bike Team, led by Team Director Randy Wood, who is also a teacher at San Jacinto High School. The SJMTB Team provides students with coaching and camaraderie that will help them achieve both competitive and non-competitive cross country goals while promoting fitness, recreation and health.

The SJMBT was founded in 2013 by two teachers at San Jacinto High School. These two teachers were very passionate about the sport of mountain biking and wanted to share the experience with kids. The team formed a High School Mountain Bike Team and later formed a Middle School Mountain Bike Team. The governing SoCal League was established in 2008.

“We are extremely honored to have been chosen as a beneficiary,” Wood said, who added that the team typically receives funding from fundraising, individual donations and business sponsorships. “Our goal is to grow and get as many kids on bikes as possible.”

He said the Charity Golf Tournament funding will be used for race fees, bikes, jerseys, transportation, overnight stays, equipment and insurance fees that are all ongoing expenses for the team. He said it will also help recruit new riders who may not have the means to purchase the necessary equipment to participate in the sport.

“Managing the costs and continued growth of the sport is difficult,” Wood said. “We do our best to find a way to get kids on bikes if they show an interest in riding.”

One of the requirements of the organizations that are chosen as beneficiaries is to provide volunteers to assist with all the logistics on and off the course during tournament days, which are March 21 and 22. Early morning check-ins, hosting games and resting points set up throughout the golf course, meeting the needs of all the players and helping out at the evening banquets at the end of each day are just some of the ways that volunteers are asked to contribute to the success of the tournament.

“My team of volunteers is looking forward to giving back,” Wood said. “A donation of $10,000 is a lot of money; we want it to be extra clear that we are very grateful for being chosen as a beneficiary.”

Another first time recipient of the generous funding generated from this annual tournament is the Oak Grove Center, based in Murrieta. Chief Executive Officer Tammy Wilson shared the mission of the nonprofit, which is “to rebuild the lives of at-risk children and their families through educating, healing, restoring relationships, building character and instilling hope.”

Oak Grove Center was founded in 1989 to provide treatment and care for children and teens struggling with severe behavioral and emotional problems. It provides residential care, education and treatment to an average of 1,000 youths each year who are at risk or have special needs. Its programs touch families throughout Southern California. In 2022, 55 San Jacinto Valley children and teens were served through its multiple programs.

Development Director Kristi Piatkowski said the Center’s vision is “to be a premier treatment center that successfully prepares youth for healthy, productive and responsible lives.”

She said Oak Grove has a diverse funding stream with treatment, housing and educational costs paid through contracts that include school districts, insurance and Department of Social Services as well as adoptions.

Regarding the Soboba donation, Wilson said, “The funding will help us complete the replacement of two playgrounds. Playgrounds are important in a child’s physical and social development as well as mental health. Physically, outdoor playgrounds help improve overall health. Mentally, playgrounds support developing relationships with peers and encourage the discovery and development of other talents. They are especially important to children with special needs. It will provide a place to play, grow and thrive, and a special, safe environment where they can “just be a kid.” Additionally, partnering with a well-respected, impactful organization such as Soboba Foundation will bring attention to Oak Grove Center, spreading more awareness of what we do for the community and how others can help.”

Piatkowski said it is the fundraised dollars that go directly to the unique needs of the youth including art and music programs, sports and recreation, vocational programs and special campus needs, such as the new playground Soboba is helping build. She said that without Soboba’s help, it would have taken Oak Grove Center longer to raise the funds as $10,000 will cover a significant portion of the funds needed to build the playgrounds.

Wilson said that Oak Grove volunteers are excited to be a part of the two-day event. “It will be interesting to see how the event is organized, meet the other nonprofits and learn about those also benefiting, and being a part of this community,” she said. “We appreciate those that give back and greatly admire the generosity of Soboba.”

Rounding out this year’s selections are the 7G Foundation, Boxing for Christ, Carol’s Kitchen, Four Directions Club at San Jacinto High School, Friends of Valley-Wide Foundation, Grandfathers for Golf Inc. and Inter-Tribal Sports.

Soboba Foundation members voted on the nearly 50 qualified applications received this year to find those that matched best with the Foundation’s mission and vision to support education, health, economic development, and special projects within Southern California. Throughout the year, the Soboba Foundation provides financial assistance for educational and charitable activities that preserve the cultural heritage of the Soboba Band and support Native American and local community programs.

“It was difficult to narrow down our choices as all the nonprofits under consideration do such meaningful and valuable work in our communities,” Soboba Foundation President Dondi Silvas said. “We hope this year’s recipients will reap many benefits from this event and we look forward to them and others applying again next year.”

The Soboba Foundation & Soboba Casino Resort Charity Golf Tournament celebrated its 10th year of togetherness, caring, helping others and giving back to community nonprofits with its two-day event a few weeks ago. On April 10, the Tribal Easter Picnic brought out all ages for egg hunts, picnic games and a catered lunch for families to enjoy.

This year’s golf Tournament supported a dozen nonprofits in their worthy endeavors by granting each of them $10,000 to continue their important work through implementation of projects or programs. Those who benefited from this year’s event were the 7G Foundation, Boxing for Christ, Carol’s Kitchen, Colombiere Retreat Center Inc. (Spirit Mountain Retreat), Friends of Valley-Wide Foundation, Lifeworks Adult Transition Program (Hemet Unified School District), My City Youth, Native American Land Conservancy, TIP of Southwest Riverside County Inc., Valley Community Pantry, Valley Restart Shelter and VIP Tots.

“It was really great to be able to gather together again, especially with this being our milestone 10th anniversary,” Soboba Foundation President Dondi Silvas said. She has served on the Foundation since 2015 but volunteered her time at the tournament prior to that. “Ten years is a long time and I love seeing the continued support of all those willing to contribute to the causes the Foundation feels work well in our communities.”

Tons of prizes are available at the SCR Event Center Awards Banquet following each day of course play for the 10th annual Soboba Foundation & Soboba Casino Resort Charity Golf Tournament.
Valley Community Pantry Executive Director Jim Lineberger said his organization has been serving those in need in the San Jacinto Valley since 1965 and has been grateful for past support from the Soboba Foundation. This year’s funds will be used to purchase a riding mower to maintain a large empty lot they have and storage racks and food sorting tables for the facility to accommodate the food donations received from local stores, businesses, churches, schools, service organizations and generous individuals.

Mary Morse of Colombiere Retreat Center Inc. said that with this generous grant from Soboba, Spirit Mountain Retreat will be able to continue offering “Return to Yourself Resiliency Retreats” at its Idyllwild facility for women veterans with PTSD.

Hemet Unified’s Sharyl Williams said having Lifeworks Adult Services be chosen as one of this year’s recipients was very exciting. She said the program currently operates an on-campus coffee shop and they want to take it on the road to other school sites, community events and local businesses to give the program’s participants more vocational and community exposure

Soboba Tribal Council Chairman Isaiah Vivanco, who has served as the Golf Tournament Committee Chair for the past eight years, enjoys getting into the game each year. Photos courtesy of the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians

Nearly 200 players were on the Soboba Springs Golf Course each day, March 29 and 30, and then made their way to the Soboba Casino Resort Event Center for the returnof the Awards Banquet where one lucky raffle grand prize winner each night was awarded $10,000 in cash and a chance to win $20,000. A successful auction and other opportunity drawings netted participants an array of sports memorabilia, equipment, fun outings and other prizes.

Soboba Tribal Council Chairman Isaiah Vivanco has served as the Golf Tournament Committee Chair for the past eight years. “We’ve developed into one of the most popular charity golf tournaments in our area,” he said.

“We continue to sell out year after year and this, I always say, is a tribute to the hard-working committee we have. This year we challenged ourselves with creating a 10th anniversary event that would top all the past events. I believe we accomplished this. Over the years I’ve developed relationships with pretty much all the participants and when I see them at other events or meetings I always get complimented on our tournament. I always let our team know of the growing excitement for our tournament, which also leads to anticipation of the next, and the committee has answered the call every time.”

Soboba Tribal Administration and Soboba Foundation members partner to offer a booth offering candy and other goodies at the Tribal Easter Picnic on April 10 at the Soboba Sports Complex.
Vivanco said a highlight of this year’s event was being able to provide grants to a dozen charities. They had planned on 10 beneficiaries as had been the case in recent years, but the Soboba Foundation made the decision to add a couple more this year and he was happy they were able to accomplish that.

“Like any big event there are always challenges or last-minute changes,” Vivanco said. “We’ve assembled a team who works well with one another. When challenges pop up our team works together to come up with the best solution. As a participant, you will see an awesome event being put on but just know that there is also an awesome team behind the scenes making sure it runs smoothly.”

He added that seeing the banquets return this year was something he enjoyed.

“Because of COVID over the past two years, we went without a banquet,” Vivanco said. “But this year we brought it back and I believe it was one of our best. From the attendance to the live auction, it was a fun-filled night. I especially like being able to interact with the participants. They are our biggest supporters and partners and being able to say thank you in person means a lot.”

The Easter Bunny poses for pictures with guests at the Soboba Tribal Easter Picnic on April 10 on the spacious grounds of the sports complex.
Soboba Sponsorship Coordinator Andrew Vallejos said, “The real heroes of the event were the Volunteer Coordinator and all the Team Members of the golf tournament committee from both the Casino Resort and Tribal Administration.”

Silvas said it is always a fun night and every year she wonders how the groups can top themselves the next time, but they do. She appreciates their ability to get out of their comfort zones for a cause they believe in. Even before she was involved as a Foundation member, she would attend the event to support the groups and have a great night out.

“Every year it gets better and better,” Silvas said. And last year’s judges brought a certain flair to the event that elevated it even more. “

Vallejos, who will emcee the program once again, said, “Often humorous and sometimes touching, each year I look forward to seeing the creativity, teamwork and dedication behind each of the contestants. They always deliver such an entertaining show for our audience and that makes them all winners in my book.”

Golfers can look forward to a fun day on the greens while local nonprofits will enjoy the green of money they can earn for their worthy causes as the Soboba Charity Golf Tournament prepares to tee off for the tenth year. The Soboba Foundation and Soboba Casino Resort are collaborating once again for this annual signature event. A two-day tournament will give teams plenty of opportunities to enjoy a round of golf while supporting 10 area charities. But the fun starts prior to the carts and clubs coming out.

Monday, March 28 will give participants a chance for an early registration and Shopping Experience at the Soboba Springs Golf Course from 5 to 9 p.m. Available spots for each day will be on a first-come, first-served basis. March 29 will mark the first day of the tournament with registration and Shopping Experience from 7 to 9 a.m. before the shotgun start at 10 a.m. Raffles, an auction and an awards banquet will follow at about 5 p.m. at the Soboba Casino Resort Event Center. The second day of the tournament will follow the identical schedule so that everyone can enjoy the same exciting experience regardless of the day they are registered to attend.

The Soboba Foundation is now accepting applications from nonprofit organizations to be beneficiaries of this year’s Soboba Charity Golf Tournament. To be eligible to be chosen as a beneficiary, the organization must be located within the San Jacinto Valley or be an organization that serves the San Jacinto Valley. Each organization must complete and submit a Nonprofit Beneficiary Application to the Sponsorship Coordinator at avallejos@soboba-nsn.gov no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday, February 1.

Submitted applications will be reviewed by the Soboba Foundation Board, who will choose ten they deem most appropriate to receive funding. All organizations that apply will be notified in writing of the final decisions. Chosen organizations will be required to promote the tournament in addition to providing volunteers for the days of the event pending COVID-19 protocols.
The ninth annual Soboba Foundation Charity Golf Tournament is in its early planning stages. The foundation is now accepting applications from nonprofit organizations to be beneficiaries of this year’s event. To be eligible to be chosen as a beneficiary, the nonprofit must be located within the San Jacinto Valley or be one that serves residents of the San Jacinto Valley.

In these COVID-19 times, nonprofits have faced tougher fundraising efforts than in the past and the Soboba Foundation is hoping this year’s event will help them out. To be considered, each organization must complete and submit a Nonprofit Beneficiary Application to the Sponsorship Coordinator, Andrew Vallejos at avallejos@soboba-nsn.gov no later than 5 p.m. on March 8.

All timely submitted applications will be reviewed by the Soboba Foundation board and those organizations that are deemed appropriate to receive funding will be chosen to be beneficiaries of the ninth annual Soboba Foundation Charity Golf Tournament.

A participant swings his club at the eighth annual Soboba Foundation Charity Golf Tournament at Soboba Springs Golf Course in 2020. – Photos courtesy of Carlos Puma/Puma Images for the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians

Each of them will be required to promote the tournament in addition to providing volunteers for all days of the event, pending COVID-19 protocols.
Having to delay the 8th annual Soboba Foundation & Soboba Casino Resort Charity Golf Tournament due to COVID-19 precautions did not hinder the excitement that was evident among the players at the Soboba Springs Golf Course. The event, originally scheduled for two days in April, was extended to three days from Aug. 30 through Sept. 1 in order to maintain social distancing for 30 four-member teams each day.

Despite the challenges to make sure the tournament could be held safely while still offering an enjoyable experience for the golfers, the event was a total success. Ten local nonprofits had previously been chosen to each receive $10,000 for their respective programs. They were: Boxing for Christ, Cops 4 Kids & Communities, Friends of Valley-Wide Foundation, Grandfathers for Golf, Historic Hemet Theatre Foundation, Hemet Unified School District’s SAILS ATP Program, Natives in Recovery, Ramona Humane Society, San Jacinto Unified School District and T.H.E. Center Inc.

“It was great hearing from everyone that they were glad we found a way to have the tournament,” Soboba Tribal Council Chairman and Tournament Director Isaiah Vivanco said. “We know these organizations need these funds now more than ever before, so we were happy to be able to find a way to make it work, even if it was a little different this year.”

In the past, volunteers from the tournament’s beneficiaries helped with all aspects of the event. This year, most volunteers were Tribal Members and their families who worked with staff to make sure things ran smoothly.

Also different was a contactless drive-through registration process as well as curbside pickup of raffle prizes. Winners of each drawing were notified via an app that was developed specifically for the event. It also provided constant contact between players and event organizers. Face masks were required to be worn and pre-packaged breakfast and lunch to-go meals were provided to all players.

Jeff Sheppard, President and CEO of Ramona Humane Society with $10,000 check he received as one of 10 beneficiaries of this year’s charity golf tournament. Soboba Foundation members that are socially distanced behind him are, from left, Vice President Jacob Briones, President Dondi Silvas and Members-at-Large Sally Moreno-Ortiz, Monica Herrera and Isaiah Vivanco.

Since there was no end-of-play banquet held for all participants as in the past, organizations were asked to send one or two representatives to the Soboba Foundation’s board meeting on Sept. 14 to receive their checks. Visits were scheduled in 10-minute intervals to allow for proper social distancing.

Jeff Penn, Executive Director of Cops 4 Kids & Communities, said his group was honored and grateful to be among the groups that were selected this year.

“My guess is most nonprofit organizations globally have been negatively impacted by COVID-19. Unfortunately, we are no different from them,” he said. “One of the main challenges is the financial health of our organization that has been significantly impacted due to not being able to have our fundraising events (Battle of the Badges, etc.) with COVID-19 looming around every corner. As always, the incredible Soboba Foundation is there to help our community, especially in these uncertain times.”

As a first-time recipient of funding made possible by the charity golf tournament, Penn said that the generous gift will make a meaningful difference for his organization.

“Simply put, without the kindness and generosity of the Soboba Foundation, we would be in a world of hurt,” Penn said. “During this turbulent and uncertain time, I am absolutely humbled by the compassion and generosity of the Soboba Foundation and all of their members. Because of the amazing people at Soboba, we are and will remain strong.”

San Jacinto Unified School District’s Communications & Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Dawn Lawrence said her district has been able to implement game-changing programs as a result of being beneficiaries of past tournaments. This year, the funds will be used to purchase Native American literature for every school library in the district. The idea was inspired by Joseph Ontiveros, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer at the Soboba Cultural Resource Department, when he presented to SJUSD teachers and administrators at the January 2020 Equity Conference.

“Now with the new school year underway, albeit distance learning only, school Library Media Technicians and the District Librarian will start planning for library additions with the help of the American Indian School, Family & Community Liaison before October,” Lawrence said.

Soboba Tribal Council members were on hand to mark the start of this year’s three-day charity golf tournament at Soboba Springs Golf Course. From left, Sergeant at Arms Daniel Valdez, Chairman Isaiah Vivanco (who also served as Tournament Director), Treasurer Sally Moreno-Ortiz, Vice-Chair Geneva Mojado and Secretary Monica Herrera. (All were asked to remove their face coverings for the photo).

Without the generosity of Soboba’s golf tournament, this project would have been shelved because so much of the district’s funds, both regular and emergency provided, have been directed specifically at accomplishing (electronic) distance learning and preparing for eventual return to in-person instruction with social distancing protection.

The money was also a boon for Hemet Unified’s LifeWorks (SAILS) Adult Transition Program who plan to use the money to help improve independent living and work opportunities for its adult students. The original intention was to use the money to meet transportation needs for students in the workability program receiving hands-on training.

“Our plans for the funds have changed somewhat since the pandemic,” said Christina Gallardo-Barrett, Program Specialist and LifeWorks Administrator. “Our program has a component of taking our students into the community. Since the pandemic, we have changed our focus to create similar opportunities for our students on-site without compromising learning opportunities.”

She said the pandemic has reframed the way everyone thinks and even though it’s been a challenge, they have discovered new ways of doing things that will improve their practices in the future.

“These funds allow us to fast-track our plans and better serve our students during these unprecedented times,” Gallardo-Barrett said. “The LifeWorks Adult Transition Program (SAILS) is extremely grateful for the generosity of the Soboba Foundation and for being a community partner to create positive outcomes for all.”

She appreciates that the Soboba Foundation pushed forward to hold this event that benefits so many great organizations and is grateful to be one of the recipients.

Jeff Sheppard is Ramona Humane Society’s President and CEO, which is dedicated to fostering the humane treatment of all animals. It implemented the Soboba C.A.R.E. (Community Animal Rehabilitation Effort) project to give homeless animals a better chance at adoption by providing treatment of their medical conditions. Many of the animals arrive at the shelter injured or ill as a result of abandonment or cruelty cases.

A golfer takes a swing on the first of three days of the Soboba Foundation & Soboba Casino Resort 8th annual Charity Golf Tournament that benefitted local nonprofit organizations.

“The funds will be prudently used to pay for veterinary treatment at the Small Animal Care Center for injured or sick homeless animals. Our foster care network and our adoption partners will share in the recovery and rehabilitation of the animals receiving treatment,” Sheppard said. “This type of program is so important to continue our goals for becoming a no-kill facility, so we are always seeking funding.”

Tony Viola with Grandfathers for Golf said last year’s grant from the tournament enabled the program to expand and serve more children. This year’s funds are also earmarked for expansion, which will be possible by adding another golf course where they can teach the game. Unfortunately, that is currently on hold due to Riverside County restrictions amid the pandemic.

“We are (working from home) doing those things we can to benefit the kids such as going over the rules and teaching etiquette of the game,” Viola said. “The Soboba Foundation did a wonderful job under the circumstances. It appeared that a good time was had by all tournament participants.”

Boxing for Christ has been fortunate to have been chosen as a beneficiary at past tournaments, which has made a huge difference for their year-round program. Some of this year’s money will be used to buy gym equipment. With new restrictions in place due to COVID-19 requirements and the fact they can only meet outdoors and not inside their gym, there was a great need for equipment geared for outdoor use.

“Since Soboba Foundation has been helping Boxing for Christ, the program has grown to the point that we are outgrowing the building. We are now adding women’s classes and training 4-, 5- and 6-year-olds on Saturdays. We have reached 1,000 students that have gone through our program since it started in 2012,” Founder and CEO Sonia Ramos said. “Soboba Foundation has helped us get to national tournaments, where we have brought home national champs. Because of Soboba Foundation’s help, we have a boxer that made it to the 2020 Olympics as an alternate. It takes a whole community to raise these at-risk youth and Soboba Foundation has shown that they care about the youth. Boxing for Christ would like to thank Soboba Foundation for helping us make champions in our valley.”

(Soboba Tees Off)

Soboba Foundation’s eighth annual Charity Golf Tournament is being planned for March 31 and April 1, and the group’s members are seeking potential beneficiaries. Ten organizations will be chosen from a typically large field of worthy applicants and will receive $10,000 each.

To be eligible, the nonprofit must be located within the San Jacinto Valley. Applications can be requested and submitted by Feb. 1 through Soboba Foundation Sponsorship Coordinator Andrew Vallejos. After careful review by the foundation board, 10 organizations will be designated as beneficiaries of this year’s tournament.

All entrants will be notified in writing of the board’s decision and all chosen organizations will be required to promote the tournament in addition to providing volunteers for both days of the event.

Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians Tribal Council Vice Chairman and Tournament Director Isaiah Vivanco said the generosity and support of sponsors and partners for this much-anticipated annual event allows the Soboba Foundation to continue assisting those in need in the surrounding communities.

Over the past seven years, the Soboba Foundation Charity Golf Tournament has contributed more than $1 million in support of many local nonprofit organizations throughout Indian Country and Southern California.

The two-day tournament will allow for a maximum of 40 teams per day and availability for each day will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants will also receive a reduced room rate opportunity at the Soboba Casino Resort hotel to allow for all guests to enjoy the entirety of the course, the festivities that follow a day on the beautiful Soboba Springs Golf Course and all that the Soboba Casino Resort has to offer.

Sponsorship packages at different levels will provide each player with exciting gifts and giveaways, along with memorable raffle opportunities and an exciting round of golf. The grand prize is a home appliance makeover valued at more than $7,500.

Soboba Foundation President Geneva Mojado credits strong teamwork and excellent organization as the reasons behind the tournament’s continued popularity and success.

“With the terrific amount of support we receive from our business partners and colleagues, we are able to provide local nonprofits with funding for some much-needed projects,” she said. “Additional funds raised from the event go on to support other organizations, events and students throughout the remainder of the year.”
