A 38-year-old man from Jurupa Valley died Saturday after suffering a medical emergency while in custody, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.

Brian Waterman was arrested early evening on Thursday by the Jurupa Valley Police Department and was being held at the Robert Presley Detention Center, the sheriff’s office said.

On Friday, Waterman began experiencing a medical emergency inside the holding cell he was in at the jail, and custody staff and jail medical personnel administered aid, the agency said.

A day later, on April 25, his condition continued to decline, and he was pronounced dead at a hospital, the sheriff’s office said.

The agency did not say what medical emergency he experienced or what led to his arrest. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Corrections Central Investigation Bureau and the county coroner are investigating, but the sheriff’s office said there were no signs of foul play.

Sgt. Robert Martinez, a public information officer with the sheriff’s office, declined to provide additional information about Waterman’s death or why he was in custody.

It marks the department’s second in-custody death this month. On April 3, the sheriff’s office announced the in-custody death of a Las Vegas resident, Maurice Landon Williamson, 35, who was transferred to a hospital for an existing diagnosed illness. Williamson was being treated and placed on supportive care, but he ultimately died, the agency said.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Saturday identified the inmate who died in a hospital Tuesday after an apparent self- inflicted hanging in his jail cell.

Grant Parker, 34, was in custody at the San Diego Central Jail downtown March 8 when sheriff’s deputies found him hanging inside his assigned cell. He was housed alone, according to authorities.

“Upon observing the situation, the deputies immediately activated 911, requested assistance from the facility’s medical staff, and began life- saving measures,” SDSO Homicide Lt. Juan Marquez said. “Paramedics and the San Diego Fire Department assumed life-saving measures upon their arrival, and Mr. Parker was transported to a local hospital. Despite all efforts, he was pronounced deceased at the hospital on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at approximately 1:15 p.m.”

Parker was arrested by San Diego Police Department officers on Feb. 14, 2026, and was facing charges of murder and assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury.

“The San Diego Sheriff’s Office extends our sympathies to the decedent’s family and all those affected by his passing,” Marquez said. “A Sheriff’s Family Liaison Officer will continue to support the family during this difficult time.”

The Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board was notified about the death. As is the protocol for all in-custody deaths, the sheriff’s Homicide Unit is conducting an investigation.

The cause and manner of death will be determined by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

San Diego County has been under intense scrutiny for years over its unusually high number of in-custody deaths. In 2022, the California State Auditor found “deficiencies with how the sheriff’s department provides care for and protects incarcerated individuals (that) likely contributed to in- custody deaths.”

That audit examined 185 deaths within the San Diego County jail system from 2006 through 2020, a rate that exceeded all of California’s other large counties during that time period. The county had 19 custody deaths in 2022 alone, and another six in 2023.

The Sheriff’s Office has committed to a $500 million effort to modernize and upgrade its jails, but advocates have questioned whether those efforts are sufficient.

RIVERSIDE, CA — A combative man who suffered a medical emergency at a McDonald’s restaurant in Riverside has died, prompting an investigation into the matter, the Riverside Police Department said Monday.

The man, whose age and identity were not released, was contacted by police officers shortly after 6:30 a.m. Friday. They were summoned to a McDonald’s in the 7400 block of Indiana Avenue after employees at the fast-food chain called about a man who had locked himself inside the restroom and was not responding.

“The business requested prosecution for trespassing, and when officers arrived, they had the man exit the restroom,” according to the Riverside Police Department. “The man became combative and force was used to detain him.”

While being treated by paramedics, the man “remained combative” before going into medical distress, the Riverside Police Department said.

“He was transported to a local hospital where medical staff provided treatment for over an hour,” the law enforcement agency said. “Despite their efforts, the man later died.”

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office are assisting with the death investigation.

No further details were released.
