Riverside County Regional Gang Task Force personnel conducted the check at 10:20 a.m. Wednesday at a residence in the 22000 block of Laguna Drive, according to a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department statement.

Officers said they obtained a search warrant for a locked safe located during the check, inside of which they allegedly found “two .40-caliber semiautomatic pistols, a .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol, a 9mm semiautomatic pistol, a .38-caliber pistol, a .38(-caliber) special revolver and a 5.7mm semiautomatic pistol loaded with ammunition designed to pierce body armor.”

Michael Morales was arrested Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, a convicted felon in possession of ammunition, committing a felony while on bail and violating parole, the department reported. Morales is a convicted felon and street gang member, according to the statement, but officials did not mention the charges on which he was previously convicted.

Inmate records indicate Morales is being held without bail at the Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta.

Anyone with relevant information on the case was encouraged to contact Task Force Officer Vera at 951-210-1000.

California has fined Amazon nearly $6 million for violating a law meant to protect warehouse workers from misuse of production quotas, state officials announced Tuesday.

The $5.9 million in penalties, which were issued last month, stem from demands that the behemoth e-commerce company placed on thousands of workers at two of its Inland Empire fulfillment centers. The California Labor Commissioner’s Office found that managers at the facilities failed to provide employees with adequate explanations of quotas that they were expected to meet as they prepared orders for shipment.

Mindy Acevedo, staff attorney with the Warehouse Worker Resource Center, an advocacy group, said in a statement released Tuesday that “these citations show Amazon failed to follow fundamental parts of the law.”

The law, AB 701, went into effect at the beginning of 2022 and requires that companies explain in writing the speed at which warehouse workers are expected to complete a certain amount of work as well as the discipline the company may impose for failure to meet the quotas. Under the law, an employee cannot be required to meet a quota that prevents them from taking meal or bathroom breaks and rest periods.

Amazon spokesperson Maureen Lynch Vogel said in an email that the company plans to defend itself against the citations.

“We disagree with the allegations made in the citations and have appealed. The truth is, we don’t have fixed quotas. At Amazon, individual performance is evaluated over a long period of time, in relation to how the entire site’s team is performing,” Vogel said. “Employees can — and are encouraged to — review their performance whenever they wish. They can always talk to a manager if they’re having trouble finding the information.”

The citations include penalties of more than $1.2 million at a warehouse in Redlands and nearly $4.7 million at one in Moreno Valley.

The fines imposed on Amazon are among the first issued by the Labor Commissioner’s Office for failing to provide written quota descriptions to its workers. Since September 2023, the office has handed down $7.8 million in penalties — a total that includes the Amazon fines, according to the Warehouse Worker Resource Center.

The enforcement comes after years of scrutiny over working conditions inside Amazon’s warehouses, including investigations by state and federal agencies into the company’s safety practices. They also come as California has come under fire for failing to enforce labor laws around wage theft and other violations.

Lilia Garcia-Brower, the California Labor Commissioner, said Tuesday at a news conference in Ontario that Amazon had not been singled out for enforcement. Her office, she said, sent out hundreds of letters notifying companies of possible violations and followed up with inspections on companies that failed to respond or comply.

“We are not playing the game of gotcha here,” Garcia-Brower said.

At the news conference, Veronica Kern, who has worked at Amazon for seven years, and currently sorts products and loads them onto conveyor belts at the Moreno Valley warehouse, said it “can be a stressful and intense place,” with managers publicly chastising workers when they decide they aren’t working fast enough.

She described her manager telling her she needed to work faster and that she was performing in the bottom 5% of workers. He would stand outside the bathroom and get workers to hurry back to work, she said.

“They started treating us like a number rather than humans,” Kern said.

Kern recalled how managers would show workers real-time productivity data that they said showed them falling short of production targets, but often would not tell workers what those targets were, she said.

Garcia-Bower said her office will defend the Amazon citation at an appeal hearing. She encouraged workers to reach out to worker centers and other community organizations for help.

“It is so important for workers to come together, understand it is the bad-faith employer who wants you to feel isolated and alone and unfamiliar with your rights.”

A Riverside County family was arrested in connection with a series of thefts targeting stores across Southern California.

The suspects, all residents of Jurupa Valley, were identified by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department as:

Thomas Balandran, 50

Sherri Alvarez, 48

Brianna Balandran, 19

Unidentified juvenile, 17

On April 24, deputies responded to a business in Temecula where thieves attempted to steal over $1,000 worth of merchandise.

Investigators identified the suspects and discovered they were responsible for at least 10 retail thefts throughout Riverside, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles counties. The family had reportedly stolen over $7,000 worth of items during those incidents, authorities said.

On May 13, a search warrant was served at a home in the 6800 block of Valley Way in Jurupa Valley.

During the search, deputies found a large amount of stolen merchandise with price tags still attached. Other items, including narcotics and paraphernalia, were also found in the home.

Detectives learned there were additional homes connected to the thefts that involved suspects knowingly buying stolen goods to resell for profit, also known as “fencing.”

On May 14, two additional warrants were served in Moreno Valley where over $3,000 worth of stolen items were found.

The adult family members were arrested on charges of organized retail theft, burglary, conspiracy, and grand theft. The 17-year-old juvenile was released to a family member and charges will be filed with juvenile probation.

Deputies discovered that Balandran was on probation for grand theft at the time and additional charges were added to include violation of probation and drug-related offenses.

Investigators believe there are more retail thefts involving the family that have not been reported.

Anyone with additional information can call Deputy Christina Weber at 951-696-3133.

“The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office has zero tolerance for these offenses and will continue to work proactively with our allied agencies, loss prevention partners, and the District Attorney’s Office to combat organized retail crime,” authorities said.

The Riverside County Department of Waste Resources will host a free backyard composting class and Make Your Own Worm Bin workshop Saturday, December 2, in Moreno Valley.

Learn how to recycle organic resources, such as yard trimmings, as well as fruit and vegetable waste into a dark, crumbly, sweet-smelling soil conditioner. The hands-on class will teach residents how compost can be used to enrich the soil in gardens, lawns and house plants. Instead of putting organic waste into the garbage to be hauled to the landfill, learn to compost.

The free Backyard Composting class and demonstration begins at 9 a.m. at Riverside County Department of Waste Resources at 14310 Frederick Street. Composting is nature’s way of recycling. It’s a great way to turn waste into a resource for the garden. In composting, organic material is mixed together in a pile or bin, where literally millions of tiny microbes digest the material and turn it into a nutrient-rich soil amendment.

Low-cost compost bins, for $18 will be available for purchase by Riverside County residents (limit three per household). County residents can purchase compost bins by cash or Visa, MasterCard, or Discover (credit card service fee will apply).

Residents will then learn how to further breakdown food and yard waste with help from worms, through a process known as vermicomposting. The Vermicomposting and Make Your Own Worm Bin workshop will begin at 10:00 a.m., immediately following the composting class.

Put worms to work with vermicomposting to break down organic waste into material containing nutrients for plant growth. Volunteer master composters will teach county residents how to set up, build, care for and harvest castings and worms.

Adult county residents interested in the workshop can purchase a worm bin kit for $35 or bring their own supplies. To see to a short list of class materials needed for the class visit http://www.rcwaste.org/vermicomposting. Tools to assemble the worm bin will be available for use at the workshop, along with worms to get your bin started. This workshop provides a hands-on opportunity to explore vermicomposting and take home an inexpensive working worm bin.

The class and workshop are free and will end by 1:00 p.m. Residents can pre-purchase compost bins and worm bin kits using Visa, MasterCard, or Discover by calling department accounting section (951) 486-3200. The classes and workshop will be held outdoors, please dress to accommodate weather and outdoor temperatures. These programs are offered to teach residents about the ease and advantages of organic material recycling and how composting helps preserve valuable space in county landfills.

For more information, contact call (951) 486-3200, visit www.rcwaste.org/composting/how or email WasteCompRecyc@rcwaste.org

Attempted murder and other felony charges were filed Tuesday against a trucker accused of opening fire on a motorist in Moreno Valley while traveling with a young girl in his rig.

Abdi J. Reynaldo of Florida was arrested last Thursday in the Coachella Valley. Along with attempted murder, the 32-year-old defendant is charged with two counts of assault with a gun and one count each of shooting at a vehicle and wilful child cruelty.

Reynaldo, who remains in custody in lieu of $1 million bail at the Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta, is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at the Riverside Hall of Justice.

California Highway Patrol Officer Juan Quintero said Reynaldo was traveling with a young girl — court papers list her age as 9 — at the time of the alleged shooting. Their relation to one another, if any, was unclear.

According to Quintero, Reynaldo was eastbound on the Moreno Valley (60) Freeway, passing Heacock Street, when he became enraged with a motorist for unspecified reasons about 5 p.m. Thursday.

The suspect allegedly pulled a handgun and fired two shots at the car, hitting it once, though the two occupants were not injured.

Quintero said the driver immediately began trailing the big rig as it continued east through the Badlands, eventually joining eastbound Interstate 10 in the San Gorgonio Pass.

The victim called 911, providing a description of the semi, but as the man was talking to dispatchers, his mobile phone signal dropped out, according to Quintero.

As the vehicles approached the Palm Springs area, the signal was re-established, and the motorist gave a position report on the truck, the CHP officer said. Multiple patrol units converged on the suspect as he reached the Bob Hope Drive near Rancho Mirage, where he was stopped and taken into custody without incident.

“Two handguns were located within the big rig,” Quintero said.

There was no word on where the trucker was headed or where his trip originated.

Reynaldo has no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.
