Reporting Deputy: Ray Cortez

File # N/A

Details:

San Jacinto, Calif. — During May’s Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, San Jacinto station reminds drivers to always look twice for motorcycles.

“Motorcycles may be difficult to spot, so being extra careful before changing lanes is always good practice,” Deputy Ray Cortez said. “Motorcycle riders are out in the elements and do not have the same protections drivers and passengers do. Please share the road with motorcycles and drive safe.”

To help protect you and your family, keep the following tips in mind while driving or riding:

Drivers

Always check mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes.

Do not follow a motor cycle closely. Always keep a safe distance.

If you see a motorcycle with a signal on, be careful. Be sure that the rider is turning before moving ahead.

Motorcyclists

Always wear a U.S. DOT-compliant helmet with eye protection.

Wear leather or other sturdy clothing such as a jacket, pants, boots with nonskid soles and gloves. Add reflective strips or decals to your clothing and motorcycle to make it easier for other drivers to see you.

Ride defensively. Don’t assume a driver can see you. Avoid riding in a driver’s blind spot.

Always keep your lights on, even during the day.

Lastly, both drivers and riders should never drive/ride distracted under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

(Traffic Collision)

On Thursday, June 18, 2020, deputies from the Norco Station responded to a report of traffic collision at Hamner avenue, cross of 3rd Street, in the city of Norco.

Upon arrival, deputies located a vehicle collision involving two vehicles and a motorcycle. During the collision the motorcyclist was ejected from his motorcycle. The motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital with major injuries.

The preliminary investigation revealed the motorcyclist was traveling northbound on Hamner Avenue, approaching 3rd street and collided into the rear of a small pick-up truck. The collision caused the pick-up to travel into the southbound lanes colliding with another vehicle. The driver of the pick-up truck and the other vehicle remained on scene. Both drivers cooperated with the investigation. At this time, it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in this collision.

The Jurupa Valley Traffic Reconstruction Team responded to the location and assumed the investigation. Hamner Avenue was closed for several hours in both directions while deputies processed the scene.
