A motorcyclist was critically injured Friday in a collision with a sedan, whose driver was also hurt, leading to a full closure of one side of Interstate 215 in Perris.

The crash happened at 5:15 p.m. Friday on the northbound side of I-215, just north of Redlands Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The agency said that the motorcyclist, whose identity was not disclosed, collided with the car in the middle lane, though it was not immediately clear exactly what triggered the wreck.

The victim was hurled into the fast lane of the freeway, where good Samaritans came to the unconscious man’s aid, according to reports from the scene.

Initial reports indicated he was dead, but Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department paramedics reached the location roughly 15 minutes later and found him with major injuries, clinging to life.

He was taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley for emergency surgery.

The driver of the car suffered minor injuries and was transported to the same hospital for further evaluation, officials said.

All northbound lanes remained closed as of 5:50 p.m., prompting a SigAlert due to the significant traffic jam stretching down into Menifee.

The CHP anticipated all lanes would stay closed until at least 6 p.m. while the wreckage was cleared and an investigation was conducted.
