The crash was reported shortly after 11 a.m. by an O’Reilly Auto Parts in the neighborhood of Pacoima in north Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The pilot, a 70-year-old man, was rescued from the plane and taken to a local hospital where he is in critical condition, the LAFD said. Officials confirmed he was the only person on the plane, and no other injuries have been reported.

Photos from local news outlets show a plane upside down in a parking lot, just a few feet away from parked cars. The nose of the plane appears to be destroyed.

Officials said the plane clipped some high voltage lines in the immediate area, and police were evacuating local businesses and residences for safety.

SAN BERNARDINO, CA — A Riverside County man was identified as the victim of a small plane crash on Saturday evening, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department announced.

Blake E. Broadbent, 35, of Riverside, died as a result of the incident. His body was recovered from the debris field Sunday, and his name was released Monday after notification of next of kin.

Shortly after 8:15 p.m. Saturday, witnesses in the north end of San Bernardino reported hearing “a plane sputter and then a loud crash, followed by a red flash,” according to the sheriff’s department.

FAA spokesperson Chris Mullooly told Patch that Broadbent was the lone occupant of the twin turbo-prop-engine Gulfstream 695A. The flight plan shows that the Gulf took off from Stockton Airport and was heading to Chino Airport when it instead crashed into the canyon.

According to authorities, the area was not accessible via vehicle or on foot, and the sheriff’s aviation division was restricted due to weather on Saturdays, which were listed as clouds, fog, and rain by the National Weather Service.

FAA records show that the plane was manufactured in 1984 and was in the process of new registration to a Santa Monica private address. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate the crash.

By JULIE WATSON Associated Press

SANTEE, Calif. (AP) — A small plane crashed in a densely populated San Diego suburb Monday, killing at least two people, including a UPS driver, and leaving a trail of destruction that sent neighbors scrambling to help neighbors. At least two others were injured.

Witnesses described a retired couple being rescued from one of two homes that were destroyed in Santee, a largely residential suburb of 50,000 people. Ten other homes were damaged.

Several vehicles, including a delivery truck, were also torched.

“Not to be too graphic, but it’s a pretty brutal scene,” Justin Matsushita, Santee’s deputy fire chief, said as firefighters searched the smoldering ruins.

Authorities didn’t identify the delivery truck company or say if anyone was inside, but United Parcel Service of America Inc. confirmed one of its workers died.

“We are heartbroken by the loss of our employee, and extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends,” the company said. “We also send our condolences for the other individuals who are involved in this incident, and their families and friends.”

The condition of the two injured wasn’t immediately known.

Michael Keeley 43, ran barefoot outside when his home shook. He saw the UPS truck in flames and found two neighbors at a burning home calling through an open window.

With thick smoke inside the neighbors’ home and flames licking the roof, Keeley stood on a rock and reached through to grab the woman’s arm and help her climb out of the window. Her forearms were burned, and her hair was singed.

“She kept saying, ‘My puppy, my puppy,’” Keeley said.

Moments later, there were explosions inside the home. Neighbors knocked out fencing to rescue the woman’s husband from the backyard.

“I’m glad I didn’t have to go inside with my bare feet,” said Keeley, a probation officer.

Andrew Pelloth, 30, was working from home when he heard a whirring and then a huge boom.

“My initial thought was that it was a meteorite coming down,” he said. “I could hear it falling and then some kind of explosion.”

Pelloth lives across the street from the retired couple and saw the house and the delivery truck engulfed in flames. Mangled ruins of vehicles were in the couple’s driveway. The woman and her husband were burned on their arms but were still able to walk and talk, Pelloth said.

No one was home at the other house that was destroyed, which sold only a month ago. Pelloth said he met the new owner Monday as he arrived to see the damage.

The plane was a twin-engine Cessna C340, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

It was believed to be a private aircraft flying from Yuma, Arizona, to Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in San Diego, Matsushita said. It was unknown how many were on board, but Mastushita said no one would have survived.

The crash happened about three blocks from Santana High School, which said on Twitter that “all students are secure.”

The crash site is a few miles north of Gillespie Field, a small San Diego County airport.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate.

Gabriel Medrano was working on the docks across the East River when he heard the first plane crash into the World Trade Center on 9/11.

“I remember seeing the burning office paper coming across the river,” said Medrano, who now lives in Southern California with his wife, Asia. “It was raining down.”

Once safely inside his Brooklyn workspace and looking out a window, he watched the second plane hit the South Tower. “When the first tower fell, I remember thinking to myself, ‘I just saw thousands of people die,’” said Medrano, who grappled with anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder years later as a result of what he witnessed.

Medrano found immediate comfort in sharing Bible verses with others.

“It was very fulfilling and satisfying to feel like you were helping other people that were going through something similar,” said Medrano. “To be able to share just a Scriptural thought with someone and to see them comforted right away was therapeutic for me, but I know I was helping them too.”

Helping others has long been linked to better emotional well-being in psychology research. The book “The Healing Power of Doing Good: The Health and Spiritual Benefits of Helping Others” describes “powerful” effects, even for helpers who have experienced trauma themselves.

Trauma was all too common among the many volunteers at Ground Zero. Roy Klingsporn, a Brooklynite who volunteered at Ground Zero nearly every day for two months, recalled on one occasion approaching a man who sat slouched in a golf cart near the site’s makeshift morgue.

“When I asked him how he was doing, he burst into tears,” said Klingsporn, now of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. “He said, ‘I’m tired of picking up body parts.’”

Within days of the attacks, Jehovah’s Witnesses set up teams that spent hours each day in Lower Manhattan, Bibles in hand, consoling everyone from the families of victims to first responders battling physical and emotional exhaustion. It was a work that changed how the organization approaches disasters, with an organized comfort ministry now being an integral part of its response to natural disasters and even the pandemic.

Recalling the gut-wrenching days he spent as one of those volunteers near the smoldering remains of the Twin Towers still stirs deep feelings in Robert Hendriks.

“It was very emotional and extremely difficult for me, but the faces of those I passed on the street said it all,” said Hendriks, now U.S. spokesman for the Witnesses. “They needed comfort, and the best thing I could give them was a hug and a Scripture.”

For Brown “Butch” Payne, the events of September 11, 2001, tore open old wounds, bringing back vivid wartime memories the Vietnam veteran had tried to forget. From his East Village apartment, Payne recalled the crowds of frantic people streaming north from Lower Manhattan. “That sight stirred up a lot of emotions in me,” he said. “It shook me to the core.”

Payne found relief in rendering aid the best way he knew how. “Sharing the Bible’s message of hope softened the blow for me,” he said.

Offering a shoulder to cry on brought Klingsporn comfort too. “It was satisfying to be of help to my community,” he said.

Two decades later, Medrano continues to find comfort from reaching out and sharing his faith with others.

“I look at other people, and it is obvious that they are looking for something to hope in,” said Medrano. “So, when you share something solid with them, it just reinforces my faith. That helps a lot.”

Payne feels the same. In 2016, after 50 years of marriage, he lost his beloved wife to cancer. On days when his grief feels overwhelming, Payne writes heartfelt letters that lift his neighbors’ spirits — and his own. He shares Scriptures and resources that have helped him, like articles on coping with trauma and loss on jw.org, the official website of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

“Encouraging others to look to the future helps me to do the same,” he said.
