The chase began shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday at an unspecified location in the Riverside metropolitan area and traversed both the Pomona (60) Freeway and Interstate 15, according to published reports.

A California Highway Patrol Inland Division spokesperson told City News Service the motorist was believed to be armed when sheriff’s deputies tried to stop him, but no other details were immediately available, including the initial reason for the pursuit.

Over the course of an hour, the suspect attempted to evade patrol deputies, eventually exiting I-15 onto Bellegrave Avenue and heading eastbound. As the vehicle approached Wineville Avenue, a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department SUV deployed a “grappler bumper” device, composed of nylon and other materials, pushing the unit under the white four-door sedan and causing the driver to lose control.

Images captured by ABC7 indicated the car plowed through a retaining wall protecting the side of a single-story house, causing major damage to the vehicle and ending the chase.

No one in the house was hurt.

CHP officers were initially requested to assist with K-9 units, but they were later canceled, according to the agency.

Deputies deployed around the vehicle, establishing a close perimeter, relying on an armored vehicle for protection in the ensuing standoff.

As of 4 p.m., there was no word on the condition of the suspect.

No deputies were injured.

PERRIS, CA — A Menifee teen was facing felony charges after leading a weekend police chase through the Perris area in an off-road vehicle.

Shortly after 2 p.m. Saturday, the 16-year-old boy, whose name was not released due to his age, was spotted driving a Polaris RZR on a public street with an underage passenger.

Deputies from the Perris Sheriff’s Station tried to pull him over, but instead of stopping the teen “sped away and drove recklessly … endangering other drivers,” the sheriff’s department reported.

Deputies chased the off-road vehicle through Romoland, Nuevo and Lakeview, and finally corraled the teen and his passenger in the hills near Foothill and Orange avenues, just south of Lake Perris, the agency said.

The passenger was taken into custody but later released to his parents. The driver, however, was booked into juvenile hall on suspicion of two counts of felony evading and one count of reckless driving, according to the sheriff’s department.

“The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office and the city of Perris are dedicated to the safety of everyone, including community members driving on/off the streets. Additionally, we would like to remind our community members that operating an OHV on [a] public street is not only illegal but it can also be dangerous,” the law enforcement agency said.

The chase began when the teen, who was not identified due to his age, was spotted Saturday morning driving a white Toyota sedan believed stolen out of Desert Hot Springs, according to a report from the Hemet Police Department.

Officers pulled the Toyota over in the 2000 block of W. Acacia Avenue around 7:48 a.m. and three people were in the car, according to Hemet police.

But as officers began speaking with the trio, the driver sped off and a police chase began, according to the report.

The teen driver headed north on Gilmore Street, then east on Devonshire Avenue. As he approached Lyon Street, he didn’t slow down for a posted stop sign and instead swerved to miss a vehicle, lost control, and skidded north and east onto the north sidewalk where the car rolled several times, striking a tree before coming to a stop, according to police.

One passenger was ejected from the Toyota while the teen driver and the front passenger remained inside the car. Officers requested medical assistance and immediately began life-saving measures on the ejected passenger, but he died at the scene, police said. His identity has not been released.

The teen driver and front passenger were hospitalized with moderate injuries; both are expected to recover, according to police.

A records check of the driver revealed there was a felony “no bail” warrant for his arrest, police said.
