WASHINGTON — The Department of Veterans Affairs announced a new partnership with the Global Liver Institute (GLI) to improve the lives of Veterans with liver diseases.

Through this collaboration, VA and GLI will provide educational materials and webinars to help increase Veteran awareness about liver disease, increase health care engagement of Veterans with a suspected or confirmed liver disease diagnosis, and ensure equitable access to information and care for Veterans from disadvantaged or underserved communities.

Educating Veterans is a critical step toward preventing and improving care for liver disease. Current data suggests that more than 30% of Veterans receiving VA care have risk factors of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (formerly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease), and VA is determined to provide these Veterans with the world-class health care that they have earned and deserve.

“Through this partnership with GLI, we’ll be able to better educate – and ultimately care for — Veterans who have liver disease or are at risk of liver disease,” said Director of VA’s National Liver Disease Program Dr. Timothy Morgan. “We look forward to working with GLI to help the more than 4 million Veterans with risk factors for liver disease.”

“GLI believes in equitable access to information, support, and care for liver health for all — especially our nation’s Veterans,” said Chief Operating Officer at the Global Liver Institute Larry Holden. “By partnering with VA, we have a tremendous opportunity to expand liver health education, connections, and opportunities for Veterans and their providers.”

Veterans can access various liver disease resources on GLI’s webpage designed specifically for Veterans at Liver Help for Veterans. For more information about VHA health partnerships, visit VHA’s National Center for Healthcare Advancement and Partnership.

WASHINGTON — VA and the NAACP announced an agreement to work together to advance and improve the quality of life for all Veterans, including minority Veterans.

As a part of the partnership, VA and the NAACP will seek to increase the number of Black Veterans enrolled in VA health care, increase awareness of VA benefits and services among Black Veterans, and increase recruitment of culturally-competent providers at VA. VA and the NAACP will also meet regularly, share expertise and knowledge, and coordinate on outreach to minority Veteran communities.

“At VA, it’s our mission to serve all Veterans, their families, caregivers, and survivors as well as they’ve served our country,” said VA Secretary Denis McDonough. “This historic partnership with the NAACP will help us deliver on that promise, enhancing our outreach to Black Veterans and helping ensure that we provide every Veteran with the world-class care and benefits they deserve.”

“As we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the integration of our armed forces, we must acknowledge the fact that Black Veterans have not always received the just treatment they deserve,” said NAACP & CEO Derrick Johnson. “That’s why the NAACP is proud to embark on this historic partnership with VA to further our commitment to ensuring that representation does not come without respect. We look forward to all that we’ll accomplish together on behalf of our Black Veterans.”

This partnership will be critical to VA’s goals to eliminate barriers and inequalities for Veterans who have historically been underserved, and to provide world-class care and benefits to all Veterans, their families, caregivers, and survivors. As a part of these efforts, VA also recently created a new Agency Equity Team — known as the I*DEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, and access) Council — which is responsible for helping VA improve outcomes for historically underserved Veterans, identifying and eliminating any disparities in VA health care and benefits, creating and implementing a VA Equity Action Plan, listening to and learning from historically underserved Veteran communities, and more. The Council is also working to eliminate disparities and barriers to recruit, hire, develop, promote, and retain employees, including those from historically underserved communities.

Data recently released by VA shows that since 2017, VA has delivered disability compensation benefits to a higher percentage of Black Veterans than other Veterans. However, grant rates for Black Veterans were lower. Through this partnership and VA’s Agency Equity Team, VA is actively looking into these differences and working to address them.

The California Women’s Party, which plans to qualify for the 2024 primary election, has created a “Humanity-First” platform which will focus on supporting attainable home ownership, universal pre-kindergarten access, a clean energy plan, and paid family leave, among other priorities, in a vocal demonstration of members’ displeasure with the current two-party system’s handling of issues that traditionally affect many women and families. The party’s goal is to gather at least 1 million members over the next four years and, once qualified, will feature at least five local candidates and one Women’s Party Presidential candidate on the November 2024 ballot.

State Chairperson and former U.S. Marine, Courtney Sheehan, states, “We are energized and strategically organized to deliver quantifiable results, not lip service. Our candidates will have a level of integrity unseen in American politics today. Disaffected Democrats, Green party members, and NPP voters who feel “politically homeless” will find a home with us as we both push back against regressive legislation and promote a platform that prioritizes the needs of female-identifying people and families. For once, women’s voices will be unapologetically at the forefront of the conversation.”

The California Women’s Party is holding their Inaugural Convention on November 8th on Zoom at 12pm, which is open to the public. Registration can be found on the party’s website, www.womenspartyca.org.
