The shooting took place just after 8 a.m. at a residence in the 3300 block of Albillo Loop as deputies were conducting a probation compliance check.

Several people were in the home’s backyard. One of the men provided false identifying information to deputies and tried to walk away, refusing commands to stop, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies used a taser on the man, but it was “ineffective,” the sheriff’s office reported.

The man continued to walk away and pulled out a handgun, prompting a deputy to fire on him, the sheriff’s office reported.

It’s not clear how many rounds hit the man.

Deputies rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived, according to the sheriff’s office. The man was transported to a local hospital where he died. His identity was not released and it’s not clear whether he was on probation.

According to sheriff’s office policy, the unnamed deputy involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave. A member of the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office will lead an investigation into the fatal shooting.

No deputies were injured during the incident.

On June 1, 2023, at 7:00 a.m., search warrants were served at the 23800 block of Nanwood Drive; 23300 block of Rolanda Drive; 13400 block of Elsworth Street; and two locations on the 24100 block of Cottonwood Avenue, all in the city of Moreno Valley. These warrants were served with the assistance of Special Enforcement Teams from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Lake Mathews Station, Lake Elsinore Station, Jurupa Valley Station, Perris Station, and San Jacinto Station, along with assistance from Riverside County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau- SWAT and Aviation Teams. As a result of the search warrants, numerous items of evidence were recovered.

The shooter in this incident has been identified as 22-year-old Bryan Corona of Moreno Valley and is still at large. Please do not attempt to apprehend Corona as he is believed to be armed and dangerous. If seen, please contact 911 immediately. On Saturday, May 20, 2023, at approximately 12:49 am, deputies from the Lake Mathews Sheriff Station responded to the 17900 block of Van Buren Blvd in the unincorporated area of Riverside commonly known as Woodcrest regarding a shooting that just occurred. Upon arriving at the location, deputies located two adult males suffering from non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Deputies rendered immediate aid to the victims until emergency medical services arrived. The victims were subsequently transported to local hospitals for treatment and are listed in stable condition.

Investigators from Lake Mathews Sheriff’s Station arrived and assumed the investigation which revealed an altercation occurred outside of the business in the parking lot involving several people which led to the gunfire. On September 17, 2022, at 8:08 AM, Thermal Station patrol deputies responded to the 84100 block of Tera Vista in the city of Coachella, reference a shooting that had just occurred. The investigation revealed a 30-year-old Coachella resident, and his 8-year-old son were in the area, when a 20-year-old Hispanic male opened fire on them, striking a vehicle several times. The suspect fled the area in a white BMW. No one was struck by gun fire, and no injuries were sustained by either victim. The investigation was assumed by the Thermal Station Investigations Bureau.

During the investigation, the suspect was positively identified as Feliciano Navarette III, a 20-year-old resident of Coachella. At 5:05 PM, Navarette III, was located in the 200 block of East Shoreline Dr., in the city of Long Beach and taken into custody without incident.

The Thermal Station Investigations Bureau served a search warrant on the vehicle Navarette III was driving, and the firearm that was suspected of being used in the shooting was recovered. Navarette III was booked at the John Benoit Detention Center, in the city of Indio, for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and criminal threats.
