The 14th annual Soboba Foundation and Soboba Casino Resort Charity Golf Tournament played out April 7-9 at the Soboba Springs Golf Course. Ten nonprofit organizations benefitted from the energy-filled days as numerous players made their way around the course after a shotgun start at 10 a.m. each morning.

Before driving out, Soboba Tribal Council Chairman Isaiah Vivanco welcomed all attendees. There were 42 foursomes on the first day, 50 on day two and 36 on the final day.

Well suited for a day on the Soboba Springs Golf Course are, from left, Dan Mayorgas (MPE Consulting), Denny Hirzel (MPE Consulting), Charles Berglund (Soboba Casino Resort), and Will Robinson (Laser Electric).
“We can’t be more grateful for your support; we couldn’t do this without our sister Tribes as well as our corporate partners,” he said. “On behalf of the Tribe and Foundation, we thank you.”

Soboba Foundation President Andy Silvas said he knows how much goes into organizing this event and thanked all those who made it happen.

Soboba Casino Resort General Manager and Tournament Director Jason Cozart reminded players of the rules and told them to have fun. He said, “The success of this annual event is evident by its growth over the past 14 years and that would not have been possible without you. Your generosity has allowed us to help local nonprofits meet their goals and fulfill their missions.”

More than 40 nonprofits submitted a qualified written application as well as a 30-second video detailing why they should be considered as a beneficiary by the Soboba Foundation Board of Directors. Since each selected group had the potential of receiving $10,000, they also were asked to describe how the funding would be utilized.

“The videos were an important part of the process, as they helped put a face to the name and gave the Board a more personal connection to each applicant,” Sponsorship Coordinator Andrew Vallejos said.

Soboba Casino Resort General Manager and Tournament Director Jason Cozart welcomes everyone to evening banquet where contest winners were announced and nonprofits received their generous checks.
All chosen organizations were required to promote the tournament in addition to providing 10 volunteers for the tournament on a designated day. Tara and Joey Placencia were co-coordinators for the volunteers once again this year. They were joined by six immediate family members who also donated their time for the event and helped with pre-tournament duties such as preparing gift packages for the players.

Arriving each morning before 6 a.m., Tara and Joey made sure everyone knew their station and what they needed to do for the day. Some were assigned to the beverage station while others were set up at different holes around the course for golfers to have fun with other games such as football pass or cornhole craze. Scoring high in these contests gave players an opportunity to win fabulous prizes at the evening’s banquet at the SCR Event Center.

“The new beverage station at golf check-in worked very well, and it was very well received by everyone,” Vallejos said. “Guests really enjoyed it, and it helped create a welcoming experience at the start of each day. We liked it very much and would definitely consider using it again in the future, while continuing to look for ways to improve efficiency.”

Tara Placencia agreed and welcomed the opportunity to assign required volunteers to the beverage station. This ensured it was fully staffed throughout the check-in process and gave volunteers the opportunity to connect with the players on their assigned day.

David Nichols pitches a ball towards a bucket during the Pickleball Pong contest while EXCEED’s Natalie Reyes cheers him on.
“We ask the organizations to provide 10 volunteers so we had some who could help when different casino resort departments requested extra help,” said Tara, who has been part of the charity golf tournament for the past 10 years.

Everyone in attendance was given the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for some amazing prizes housed in a room adjacent to the banquet room. There was also a grand prize winner of $14,000 in cash each night for those who purchased $50 or more in raffle tickets.

This year’s deserving nonprofits were 7G Foundation, Care-A-Van Transit Systems, Daughter of Soboba, Dream the Impossible, EXCEED, Hemet Youth Wrestling, Lifeworks ATP, Native American Land Conservancy, Oak Grove Center, and San Jacinto Lions Club.

The 7G Foundation is a collection of entrepreneurs, coaches and Tribal leaders building on the strength of their ancestors to mold the next seven generations of Native leaders through education, athletics, culture, and real-world support. Funding will support their annual Indigenous Bowl.

Hitch, Soboba’s dedicated pond manager, is joined by co-handlers Tyler VanValkenburg, left, and Aaron Kelsey, who is also golf course superintendent.
Care-A-Van offers free transportation for elderly and disabled individuals to access critical services and resources. Volunteers from the transit systems’ partner agencies included Teresa Suarez and her daughter Angelica. “Everything ran smoothly,” said Teresa, who helped make sure all coolers were filled throughout the day. Czaia Velazquez and Jessica Lacayo worked the Dartboard Chip game at Hole 1. Their enthusiasm got players off to a good start. “I love it, I’m having a good time,” Care-A-Van dispatcher Velazquez said.

The Daughter of Soboba ($ovóova Po’$wáamay) seeks to strengthen the cultural connections between elders, young women, and girls in order to create a cycle of learning, connecting, and sharing with one another. Dream the Impossible encourages Native youth to dream big and engage in new experiences and provides Native youth exposure to college campuses.

Golfers at Hole 4 were treated to snacks at the Roadrunner Express station.
EXCEED provides services and supports that empower individuals with disabilities to explore opportunities, make informed choices, and achieve greater independence. Funds from the charity golf tournament will support its year-round Art in the Park community-based creative arts program. “Everyone is so nice and the players are respectful and having fun,” said volunteer Jennifer Herrera.

Hemet Youth Wrestling introduces San Jacinto Valley area youth to the sport of wrestling within a safe, fun and challenging environment. Lifeworks ATP is a Hemet Unified School District transition program for special education students ages 18-22 that strives to equip every adult student with skills towards independence. Teachers Abby Smith, Kazryn Gess and Sharyl Adams Williams were among the 10 volunteers who spent day two on the course on behalf of the Lifeworks program. Several of the volunteers began their shift at 6 a.m., helping with check-in. Funding the organization received will help with field trips to museums and local workplaces, along with overall program operations.

Care-A-Van volunteers Czaia Velazquez and Jessica Lacayo encourage a golfer at the Dashboard Chip contest on Hole 1.
Native American Land Conservancy is an intertribal nonprofit founded in 1998 to acquire, preserve, and protect sacred lands. Funds from their participation in this year’s event will support the Land Back Initiative project to return state school lands to Tribal communities.

Oak Grove Center rebuilds the lives of at-risk children and their families through education, healing, restoring relationships, building character, and instilling hope. Being a recipient this year will help them expand their mental health treatment services. Development Director Romy Fazeli spent the first day at Hole 12 with colleague Erick Montejo cheering on those taking part in the Football Pass game. “Everyone has been great; we’re excited to be here,” Fazeli said. Jean Bacher has been a youth support worker at Oak Grove for 10 years but was at the charity golf tournament for the first time. “I love it,” she said. “This is a great opportunity to engage with the community and see everyone supporting nonprofits.”

The San Jacinto Lions Club has a long-standing commitment to community service, with a strong focus on supporting the blind and visually impaired. Past District Governor Ken Reed said being one of the lucky recipients from this year’s event will be a big help to the club whose services are provided to those less fortunate in the community. Funds will be used to support the “Dance for Fun” program that offers a free social and inclusive event for individuals with disabilities.

Sergio Ramon, founder of Grips on the Go, shows the custom grips made for the 14th annual charity golf tournament.
The energy was at an all-time high level out on the golf course and at the Event Center, thanks in part to the upbeat tunes spun by DJ Mike Nevarez aka Da Chef who also kept things on schedule by making important announcements at both locations.

Vendors dotted the course with a huge variety of food and drinks. Roadrunner Express store manager Tony Brimer and Assistant Manager Ruby Arrietta were set up at Hole 4 with a snack station. Offering plant-based Yerba Mate drinks with organic caffeine and grab and go snacks, visitors were also treated to a lip balm delivered in the shape of a golf ball. Soboba Tribal member Arrietta said she was happy to be part of the tournament. “I like to represent and do for my people,” she said. Sergio Ramon, founder of Grips on the Go, replaced club grips for those who asked. He offered all colors and designs, including one that was customized for the tournament.

Charles Berglund is SCR’s Executive Director of Facilities and Public Works. He said the event is always a highlight for him because it brings together so many people they don’t get to see often. “Our vendors, sponsors, along with the Soboba Foundation and the Soboba Casino Resort team, join forces to create an event that’s top tier in every way,” Berglund said. “It’s always rewarding to hear positive feedback about the event and our course, and it reinforces why it’s so special to be a part of it.”

Another attraction was the opportunity for players to interact with one of Soboba’s newest employees, Pond Manager Hitch. Already a social media star, the border collie from North Carolina has found a beautiful home at Soboba Springs Golf Course. Handler Aaron Kelsey is the superintendent of the golf course and said Hitch traverses water features three times a day to chase away waterfowl such as ducks and geese. “He has become a little rock star,” Kelsey said. See Hitch in action on Instagram at www.instagram.com/reel/DUouFlVj7jn.

SCR Promotions Manager Corryn Salgado Flores said the tournament went very smoothly for the team this year. “The vibes on the course were calm all around and it really did make for a great experience. The highlight for me was seeing my team work in sync with all the other departments, vendors, volunteers, and golfers,” she said. “Hearing all of our vendors and guests say, ‘Everyone is so friendly and nice here,’ multiple times lets us know we’re doing something right. There is a lot of prep for this event and as long as the guest experience is amazing, all of the hard work is worth it.”

Soboba continues to strengthen the community, one swing at a time. Always rooted in the tradition of giving back, this signature event has everyone playing for purpose year after year.

Each year, the Soboba Casino Resort and the Soboba Foundation present a Holiday Mixer at the SCR Event Center for members of the Hemet/San Jacinto Valley Chamber of Commerce. This year was different in that members of the Greater San Jacinto Valley Chamber of Commerce were also invited to the Dec. 18 event. This symbol of unity was not lost on the attendees who were not charged to attend and completely filled the center. Chamber members strive to bring the community together throughout the year so to have that message celebrated at this year’s mixer was especially meaningful.

Rafael Arce is a mortgage broker with California Home Path and has been a member of the Hemet/San Jacinto Valley Chamber of Commerce for about a year and a half and currently serves on its Board of Directors. Established in 2020, California Home Path is a community-focused mortgage brokerage dedicated to helping people move forward with confidence through clear guidance and trusted local relationships.

“My focus is on education, clarity, and helping clients make confident, informed decisions throughout the home-buying process,” Arce said. “We help individuals and families navigate home financing through purchase loans, refinances, and FHA programs.”

Attending his first Holiday Mixer presented by Soboba, Arce was impressed by the turnout and positive energy.

“It felt well organized and genuinely focused on bringing the local business community together in a meaningful way,” he said. “A highlight for me was seeing so many local business owners come together in one space to connect, support one another, and celebrate the season. The setting at Soboba Casino Resort’s Event Center made it a welcoming and memorable event.”

Arce said being part of the Chamber helps build trust, visibility, and strong local relationships.

“It creates opportunities to collaborate with other business owners and stay connected to what’s happening in our community,” he said. “Being a Chamber member allows us to build strong local relationships, stay connected to the business community, support local initiatives, and contribute to the overall growth of the Hemet–San Jacinto area.”

Although Toyota of Hemet has been a valley icon for decades, new ownership was assumed in May 2024. Manager Huy Nguyen said Its membership in the Hemet/San Jacinto Valley Chamber of Commerce is new, and they look forward to becoming an active and engaged member of the local business community.

“We are excited to begin building relationships and contributing to the local business network,” Chamber Board member Nguyen said. “This was our first Chamber event, and our impression was very positive. The welcoming atmosphere and genuine connections made it a great introduction to the Chamber community. I enjoyed meeting local business owners and community leaders and getting a firsthand feel for the collaboration and positive energy within the Chamber.”

Toyota of Hemet is a community-focused dealership committed to service, integrity, and building long term relationships.

“Being a Chamber member allows us to build strong local relationships, stay connected to the business community, support local initiatives, and contribute to the overall growth of the Hemet–San Jacinto area,” Nguyen said.

Carlos Michel is a CEO, entrepreneur and proud Veteran. A four-year member of the Hemet/San Jacinto Chamber of Commerce, he serves on its Board of Directors.

“As a multi-business owner and entrepreneur, my active involvement allows me to contribute directly to the Chamber’s mission and to the continued growth and strengthening of our local business community,” he said. “Drawing on my background as a former elementary school teacher in the valley, I am committed to educating Chamber members on the benefits available to them, helping them navigate resources, and serving as a knowledgeable, approachable advocate for their long-term success.”

Michel owns and operates several veteran-owned, locally owned businesses. Carlitos Frozen Yogurt is a family-friendly frozen yogurt shop proudly serving East Hemet and providing a welcoming space for local families. Shooters Sports Bar & Grill is a community-centered venue offering food, entertainment, and a gathering place that supports local pool and dart leagues and events. Essential Blasting Inc. is a Valley-based industrial services company specializing in sandblasting, pressure washing, and surface restoration while creating skilled local jobs. Finally, Colt Boots Western & Work Wear is a locally rooted retailer supplying quality western and work apparel, shoe repair services and custom hat shaping and cleaning services in support of the Valley’s workforce.

Soboba Treasurer Dondi Silvas and Secretary Joseph Placencia at the Holiday Mixer that brought together both valley Chambers.

“My businesses are built on serving the community, creating local jobs, and strengthening the valley by keeping commerce, connection, and growth rooted right here at home. Together, these businesses serve diverse needs across the community while sharing a unified commitment to veteran leadership, local ownership, job creation, and sustainable growth throughout the Valley,” Michel said. “Colt Boots, established in 2022, was the first of my businesses and laid the foundation for expanding into other industries. Each company was started with the intention of meeting a local need, creating jobs, and giving back to the Valley.”

After attending multiple Chamber events over the years, Michel said this year’s Holiday Mixer stood out because of the strong turnout and sense of collaboration.

“Events like this reinforce how connected and supportive our business community is,” he said. “The event itself was exceptionally well executed. Andrew Vallejos was an outstanding host—

professional, welcoming, and generous throughout the evening. His attention to detail, the thoughtful gifts provided, and the overall level of hospitality set a high standard. The entertainment exceeded expectations and was nothing short of spectacular, reflecting Soboba’s commitment to hosting events that are both memorable and meaningful.”

He added that one of the highlights of the event was the opportunity to connect with fellow business owners, community leaders, and members of the Soboba Tribal Council.

“The positive energy and genuine support among those in attendance were truly evident,” he said. “As always, the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians continues to demonstrate its commitment and dedication to what they have described as their inherent duty—to support local small businesses throughout the valley and to create meaningful connections between small businesses and larger enterprises.”

Michel said being a Chamber member provides valuable networking opportunities, increased visibility, and access to relationships that help local businesses grow together rather than in isolation. It fosters collaboration, trust, and long-term partnerships within the community. Serving on the Board has also given him a deeper appreciation for the work being done behind the scenes to support local businesses.

“I take pride in being involved in the Chamber and supporting events that bring the community together,” Michel said. “Building relationships and working alongside other local business owners is something I value greatly.”

Several games were held throughout the three-hour event that brought laughter and frivolity to the crowd. A few rounds of musical chairs were followed by a dance contest where judges selected first, second and third place winners based on crowd reaction, creativity, confidence, personality, and staying on beat through many song/genre changes produced by DJ Mike Nevarez.

Contest winners were not the only ones who received prizes as there was a “raffle hour” that gave all guests an excellent opportunity of going home with an early Christmas gift.

Pearls of Excellence was the theme for 2025 Installation and Awards Gala presented by the Hemet-San Jacinto Valley Chamber of Commerce on June 27 at the Soboba Casino Resort Event Center. A room full of business and community leaders dressed in formal attire added to the elegance of the evening.

Executive Director Kevin Saunders welcomed everyone to the event and acknowledged the importance of support from all local businesses, especially those who are part of the “Circle of Influence” with their Platinum, Diamond and Gold sponsorships.

The celebration began with the passing of the gavel from 2024-2025 Chairwoman Patricia Scott to 2025-2026 Chairman Lakshman Koka. In Scott’s farewell speech, she said, “This year, our chamber didn’t just survive, we thrived. We hosted events that had people talking. We don’t just host events, but we build legacies, one business at a time.” She added that the real MVPs of the organization are the volunteers and board members that consistently devote their time and talent. “Let’s continue moving the chamber forward,” Scott said.

Last year’s Nonprofit of the Year was the Soboba Foundation. Its president, Dondi Silvas, left, presents this year’s award to Amber Royer of Out of the Ashes.

Koka expressed his desire to challenge the newly installed board of directors that included some returnees and a few new faces. “We are a not-for-profit organization, but we need to function like a for-profit business for our members,” he said. “This year I want to showcase our refreshed management and build on reconnecting with the cities. Something I’m passionate about is bringing the three Cs to the table: chamber, cities, collaboration. Each has different leaders, different strategies and different visions.”

There were 107 new members added to the Chamber in the past year and Koka is looking forward to increasing that and to providing high-quality service that will prove valuable to each one’s membership.

After guests enjoyed a bountiful buffet, the awards in 10 categories were announced. Tradition dictates that the winners of the award from the previous year present it to the current winners, who are chosen through membership voting. Nominations are also submitted by Chamber members.

The 13th annual Soboba Foundation & Soboba Casino Resort Charity Golf Tournament was a sold-out event held April 7-9 at the Soboba Springs Golf Course. Every day of the three-day tournament drew more than 150 players to the beautiful, lush course followed by an afternoon of great food, fun, and prizes.

Each year, deserving nonprofit organizations benefit from the tremendous outpouring of support shown for the tournament. After completing the application process that included a video presentation of why they should be chosen, ten were selected by the Soboba Foundation board members to receive $10,000 each.

Haven Pet Center’s Cindy Gissel, Jeff Sheppard and Nicole Smith volunteer at one of the Fairway Frenzy Games at the Soboba Springs Golf Course.
But they are not just given a check – they are required to volunteer their time at the tournament itself and are assigned certain tasks. Volunteers play a key role in making sure that all participants enjoy themselves from the time they check in until they leave at the end of the day.

Sponsorship Coordinator Andrew Vallejos hosted an orientation for the nonprofit representatives about 10 days prior to the event to make sure everyone was on the same page and knew what was expected. Volunteer Coordinators Tara and Joseph Placencia were also there to answer any questions about what volunteers needed to do on the day they were assigned to help.

A player tries her hand at Cornhole Craze on the golf course’s sixth hole. She is assisted by Hemet Youth Wrestling Club volunteers Vanessa Higuera and Matthew Brant. Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians photo

There were six holes that offered “Fairway Frenzy Games” where players could try their hand at winning additional prizes if they got the best score of the day among all the golfers that passed through. Volunteers from the various nonprofits were stationed at these holes to oversee the game play and record the names and scores of each participant. Most of the games were set up adjacent to vendors offering snacks, drinks, food and/or swag, which enticed the golfers to take a break from the greens and interact with the nonprofits that were there.

Each of the course games were explained at the orientation so that information could be shared with their group’s volunteers. This definitely helped the event go smoothly.

Aside from the ones representing the nonprofits, there are other volunteers who are always eager to help. Tara said, “Our main recruits have been the Placencia family, Maria Vivanco and Sierra Mendez; mostly Tribal members.”

Teams get ready to head to the course for the 13th annual Soboba Foundation & Soboba Casino Resort Charity Golf Tournament, including some members of Soboba Tribal Council.
Tara, who is married to Soboba Tribal member Patrick Placencia, has been volunteering her time at the event for the past 10 years. She got involved when her husband was on the Soboba Foundation board. She started with registration but that expanded into other areas. She and her nephew Joseph have overseen the volunteers for about three years. They coordinate assigning duties to each organization to be sure all positions are well covered. Tara also traverses the course in a golf cart to make sure all the vendors and volunteers stationed at several of the holes have what they need.

“I love this tournament, and this year went pretty smoothly,” she said. “I love getting to know the team members that work so hard for the Tribe. Everyone worked very hard to make this a successful event. I thank Andrew and the Soboba Foundation for letting me be a part of it.”

The 10 beneficiaries from this year’s charity golf tournament are Boxing for Christ, Care-A-Van Transit Systems Inc., Friends of Valley-Wide Foundation, Haven Pet Center, Hemet Youth Wrestling Club, Inter-Tribal Sports, My City Youth, Oak Grove Institute Foundation, San Jacinto Unified School District’s Rose Salgado Elementary School and Valley Community Pantry.

This year, the groups were assigned a specific day to provide several volunteers to also help with vendor check-in, greet guests to the banquet and other tasks throughout the day that started at 6 a.m. with the arrival of vendors. Several groups had enough volunteers to split them into shifts for the 12-hour day that ended at 3 p.m. at the golf course and then continued at the Soboba Casino Resort Event Center until after 6 p.m.

Tribal Council member Michael Bentiste said, “The whole team does an awesome job on the organization of this event each year – it is top notch.”

DJ Mike Nevarez energized the players in the morning with his tunes emanating from the outdoor loudspeakers. He continued the entertainment at the banquet each night.

“I figure everyone comes ready to party, so I play something for everyone,” he said, adding that this is the third year he has provided music and announcement services for the charity golf tournament.

Prior to the 10 a.m. shotgun start of the scramble style play, Soboba Tribal Council Chairman Isaiah Vivanco thanked all the participants for their support before introducing other members of the Council and the Soboba Foundation to the crowd who were seated in their golf carts, ready to roll.

“I felt the tournament was a resounding success,” Soboba Tribal member Cozart said. “It brought together brothers and sisters from Tribes near and far, as well as partners of the Soboba Band.
As the Roadrunner Express, across from the Soboba Casino Resort, prepares for its two-year anniversary, there will be many promotions available during its Customer Appreciation Week from Feb. 24 through March 2.

For those that regularly shop there for gas, food and other convenience store items, the biggest change will be seen with the unveiling of 24 slot machines, activated and ready for play on Feb. 24.

“This will be an expansion of the same great slot mix experience at the Soboba Casino Resort,” said Steven Nino, Soboba Economic Development Corporation Treasurer. “All the slot machines have been strategically placed on the wall space of the store, allowing for ease of access of our C-Store merchandise and services.”

While there will be four major giveaway drawings on Feb. 27, 28 and Mar. 1, the biggest thank you for continued support will be the discounted fuel prices from 9 a.m. on Feb. 24 through 9 a.m. on March 9. All customers can take advantage of fuel savings to fill up their gas tanks with rollback fuel savings that link to Soboba Casino Rewards.

Roadrunner Express averages more than 3,000 customers per day and nearly half of the staff are Soboba Tribal members.

“Our biggest staples of our property include the lowest fuel costs in the valley, Seneca brand cigarette sales, and our Native food menu,” Nino said. “Native Menu occurs every Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It includes Frybread, Indian Tacos, Popovers, and Frybread Pizza.”

He said customer feedback is always welcome and the main comment they receive from guests relates to expanding the Native Menu to more days.

Roadrunner Express opened its doors on Feb. 27, 2023, and quickly became a one-stop shop that is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, allowing it to service the area and cater to Soboba Casino Resort patrons while they are arriving at and leaving the resort.

Nino said the biggest change he has seen in the past two years has been the maturity of the store in matching what customers want and what they are able to offer inside through strategic vendor selection that promotes Tribal partnerships.

The Soboba Economic Development Corporation, which oversees many of Soboba’s public entities, is excited to announce the addition of Ronald Rhea as Director of Operations. The Menifee resident brings a wealth of experience and a deep dedication to fostering success and growth in every organization he serves.

“My duties are currently to oversee our current endeavors while simultaneously working with the Board of Directors to research and leverage opportunities that will support economic growth on behalf of the Tribe for generations to come,” Rhea said.

Having already earned a master’s degree in Health Care Administration, the United States Navy veteran will be completing his second master’s in Business and Organizational Leadership in the fall. He was inspired to apply for the position by the people of Soboba, and the economic growth opportunities that will allow him to be a part of a culture that cultivates change and creates opportunities for the people.

Rhea plans to bring leadership, passion, commitment, and a strong work ethic to his new role. “I have an unwavering dedication to winning by creating relationships and strategic partnerships that I can foster on behalf of the people of Soboba. I bring a ‘never say can’t’ attitude, seeking out uncomfortable situations with honor and humility,” he said. “Economic development is something that I have always done and it is something I literally learned growing up and have been involved in some capacity my whole life. The ability to create economic opportunities on behalf of the greater good has always been a passion of mine, which will echo in my efforts.”

As for his role in the customer appreciation week at Roadrunner Express, Rhea said, “I will have the same involvement in this celebration as I will in all; I will be in the back cheering on the workers who are the real reasons we are able to have a sustainable business that empowers the city. I will highlight our store manager, Michael Paunovic, who has done a magnificent job and make sure our process for success is in place for the duration of the week.”

Additionally, he said he wants everyone to know that “Ronald Rhea is not just my name; it’s my badge of honor that reminds me of my unwavering dedication to serve. I am a retired Navy veteran who has had the privilege of playing professional basketball and earning a master’s degree because I understand the need to serve. I carry that same effort to serve every day for the people of Soboba.”

Currently, Roadrunner Express is the exclusive site to purchase RIVR drinks in California, being the only C-Store with the product line. Owned by the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians, RIVR is a functional mushroom infused tea born from over 1,000 years of ancestral wisdom.
Soboba Team Members were treated to an end-of-the-year Appreciation Brunch at the Soboba Casino Resort Event Center on Dec. 19. During the event, several individuals from 20 departments were singled out for their outstanding performance for the past year.

“We have over 300 dedicated team members that provide services to the Tribal government and its members,” Tribal Executive Officer Steven Estrada said. “We seek opportunities to recognize their efforts and service throughout the year, but this culmination event brings us to one place. Having Tribal leadership present to recognize these dedicated team members is important, especially around the holiday season.”

Team Members from Noli Indian School enjoy brunch at the Soboba Casino Resort Event Center, Dec. 19.

Team Member Choice of the Year was determined by votes from their peers and this year the honor was bestowed upon two recipients – Kristie Shear and Jasmine Robinson.

Shear is a janitorial team member who was selected for her exceptional dedication, hard work and positive attitude. “She consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that all areas are impeccably maintained, creating a clean, safe and welcoming environment for everyone,” Estrada read from her nomination statement. “Kristie’s attention to detail is unmatched, whether it’s ensuring that common areas are spotless, restrooms are always stocked and sanitized, or floors are polished to perfection.”

He went on to say that what truly sets Shear apart is her reliability and commitment to the job, often taking initiative without needing to be asked and willingly stepping in whenever there is a need.

“Her friendly demeanor and positive attitude make her a favorite among co-workers, and she fosters a sense of pride in the workplace through her actions,” Estrada said. “Kristie’s consistent work ethic and outstanding service have made her an invaluable member of our team, and her recognition as Team Member Choice of the Year is a well-deserved honor.”

Shear has been with Soboba since 2022. She said she was caught off guard and completely shocked to have been chosen. She enjoys spending her day with the amazing people she works with and said the children at the Soboba Tribal Preschool make her day.

“I feel incredibly honored for the recognition. I am so thankful that I have the opportunity to work for this amazing Tribe,” Shear said. “I would also like to say thank you to my supervisor, my executive team, the Foundation, and my co-workers for making it a wonderful place to work. I like how amazing the Tribe is to their employees.”

Robinson, who serves as Executive Assistant to Estrada, was also named Team Member Choice of the Year for her exceptional performance, unwavering dedication, and unparalleled organizational skills.

“Throughout the year, Jasmine has consistently demonstrated an extraordinary ability to manage complex tasks with ease and efficiency,” Estrada said. “Whether coordinating schedules, handling sensitive communications, or assisting with critical projects, Jasmine approaches every task with professionalism, attention to detail, and a proactive attitude. Her excellent communication and interpersonal skills have made her an invaluable team member.”

Robinson was also applauded for her ability to foster strong relationships across the organization. “Her ability to keep calm under pressure ensures that everything runs smoothly, even in the busiest of times,” Estrada continued. “Her dedication, initiative and positive attitude have earned her the respect and admiration of co-workers, making her a key pillar of our team. Jasmine’s outstanding contributions have truly set a high standard and her recognition as Team Member Choice of the Year is a well-deserved honor.”

Robinson, who has worked for Soboba for the past two years, was very grateful to receive the award. “It shows acknowledgement from everyone that you are doing a good job,” she said. “I appreciate everybody that voted for me.” She said what she likes best about her job is that it is always something different and she enjoys the variety.

Grounds Maintenance Supervisor Tony Rosalez was named Team Member of the Year, chosen by department heads and staff. He has been an integral part of Soboba’s team since 2018, initially joining as a Groundskeeper before being promoted to his current role of supervisor.

Over the years, Rosalez has consistently proven himself to be a dedicated and reliable team member, with a strong commitment to his work and the Tribal community. He has built a solid rapport with his co-workers and is respected for his professionalism.

“Tony excels in building and maintaining strong working relationships with vendors, ensuring that projects are completed efficiently and to the highest standards,” Estrada said. “He works closely with the Citrus Grove, assisting with equipment maintenance and fertilizer needs.”

It was noted that Rosalez’s knowledge and skills are extensive, particularly in irrigation systems, lawn care, and overall grounds maintenance. “Tony’s deep understanding of these areas ensures that the Tribe’s grounds are well-maintained,” Estrada said. “Whether it’s handling an underground water pipe repair during an emergency or waterproofing a leaky roof in the rain, Tony’s reliability and hands-on approach have proven invaluable time and time again.”

Rosalez’s commitment and reliability makes him an indispensable member of the team. His dedication, work ethic and positive attitude are qualities that enhance the quality of the grounds within the Tribal community. “We are fortunate to have someone like Tony Rosalez leading our grounds maintenance efforts,” Estrada said.

Receiving the gift of being named as top Team Members are, clockwise from top left, Ulises Pedraza, Jasmine Robinson and Kristie Shear.
Soboba Tribal Council Chairman Isaiah Vivanco, Vice Chairwoman Geneva Mojado, Secretary Monica Herrera, Treasurer Michael Bentiste and Sergeant-at-Arms Daniel Valdez worked with Estrada to determine who would be chosen as Manager/Director of the Year. They selected Accounting Manager Ulises Pedraza who has been with the Tribe since February of 2017.

“Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of watching him grow both professionally and personally,” Estrada said. In 2018, Pedraza became an American citizen and in 2019 he married the love of his life, Raquel, at the beautiful Soboba Springs Golf Course. Together they have two children, 3-year-old Camila and 1-year-old Catalina.

Pedraza has truly made Soboba Tribal Administration his career. He graduated from the University of California, Riverside with a bachelor’s degree in economics and accounting. He began his journey at Soboba as an Accounting Specialist and steadily advanced through various roles before becoming the Accounting Manager.

“Throughout his career at Soboba, Ulises has consistently demonstrated a quick resolve to issues across multiple departments,” Estrada shared. “His dedication to Soboba is evident in his commitment to the success of our goals and his tireless work ethic. Ulises embodies strong values and professionalism, making him a true asset to our team. We are fortunate to have him with us.”

Pedraza has lived in San Jacinto since 1999 and loves the people where he lives and works. “I like how Soboba is growing and I’m proud to be part of that growth,” he said. “I was surprised and thankful to receive this recognition. I’m fortunate to have a great team that makes my job easy.”

Aside from a delicious buffet of salads and Mexican food fare, there was a pasta bar with many options for hungry guests. DJ Mike Nevarez played a variety of holiday music and helped emcee some of the games.

Guests were invited to participate in a written riddle game and Fruit Roll-up challenges. A game of musical chairs had the top three winners vying for gifts of personal time off, ranging from one day to one week, which is priceless.

Nearly 60 coveted raffle prizes were available, and winners had the option of trying their luck with Plinko to score cash prizes and more.

As part of their ongoing effort to ensure safety in the event of emergencies, the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians hosted the California State Fire Marshal’s course for Incident Management of High-Rise Fires at its Soboba Casino Resort, Nov. 4-8. The classes, skills instruction and drills allowed more than 50 firefighters the opportunity to learn all the ins and outs of how to respond to high-rise fires. CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department has three of the very few State instructors certified to teach this course.

CAL FIRE’s Scott Lewis, Fire Captain with the Training Bureau, oversees the high-rise fire operating cadre that serve as instructors for the annual event that has been held at Morongo and Pechanga in previous years. He has worked for CAL FIRE for the past 26 years and has spent 23 years in the area of training, joining the Training Bureau two years ago.

CAL FIRE’s Scott Lewis, Fire Captain with the Training Bureau, talks with firefighters during a hands-on drill at the Soboba Hotel, Nov. 6. Karina R. Espinoza photo

While the Soboba Casino Resort hotel is classified as a mid-rise building at six stories, whereas high-rise buildings are typically 10 stories or higher, it offers a typical layout with a lobby, elevators, stairwells, water supply systems, and more.

The weeklong training consisted of a combination of lectures, hands on-training, and ended with two days of full-scale scenarios. The logistics drills put all the lessons into action. There was participation from several fire departments, aside from Soboba. Crews from Morongo, Pechanga, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Loma Linda, CAL FIRE Riverside, CAL FIRE Santa Clara Unit and CAL FIRE Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit took part in the training. Members of the Orange County Fire Authority were there in a “train the trainer” role so they could take the learned information back to their stations.

More than 50 firefighters take part in a weeklong training at Soboba Casino Resort that included a written test at the Event Center where two days of lectures were held. Karina R. Espinoza photo

Soboba Fire Captain Gabe Herrera said the purpose of Wednesday’s training was to reinforce the knowledge the crews had learned in the lectures Monday and Tuesday. A written test of 50 multiple choice questions was administered that morning, with all students passing. Herrera said it’s important for all personnel to learn how to fight these types of fires because they are so different from other types.

High-rise incidents are referred to as “low frequency, high risk” and take over 100 firefighters to handle, with the goal of achieving knock down with 30-40 firefighters within 30-40 mins with one hose line. Additionally, Lewis said, “Casinos are very unique; they are not standardized, and every building has its own nuances and ins and outs.” He said it was very helpful for Soboba staff to provide them with the opportunity to have a walk through to prepare for this event, which took about six months to plan and coordinate.

Firefighters learn about the water supply system at SCR during skills instruction on Nov. 6.

Part of the preparation included assistance from the Moreno Valley College School of Public Education who sponsored the class so all students will receive college credits for their participation. The school assisted with the registration process for all who enrolled.

Fire Captain Scott Mason is a third-generation firefighter who has been with CAL FIRE for 28 years. California has a cooperative agreement, sort of like a super mutual aid, and CAL FIRE controls the movement up and down the state. They are divided into zones/regional groups that can deploy assets north and south, as needed.

Because newer high-rise buildings are modernized and have state-of-the-art detection systems, it was helpful to have Soboba Fire Captain John Hines involved since he spent 22 years with the Long Beach Fire Department where there are many older high-rise buildings that are more susceptible to fires.

Hines helped write some of the standards used in this type of training. After leaving Long Beach, he was happy to have the opportunity to join Soboba Fire. “It’s a different program out here,” he said. “I’ve met a lot of nice people, and I get to train others.” Hines is also a member of the Riverside County Training Officers’ High-Rise Cadre.

The importance of having so many different agencies learn how to handle these incidents cannot be minimized. If a working fire should break out at SCR, there are not enough personnel within their own fire department which employs about 20. Hines said more than 100 would be needed.

“This type of training brings us all together to get on the same page to be prepared when all hands have to be on deck,” Hines said. “It’s tremendous that Soboba is hosting this.”

Lewis, who trains throughout Riverside County, said even with 94 stations within the CAL FIRE Riverside County Fire Department, they could not handle a major incident on their own. “We all train together to learn the same tactics and strategies, so we are all on the same page of music; it’s a team effort,” he said.

He said at least one ladder truck on scene is crucial since they are basically rolling toolboxes with lots of equipment, such as generators, that may be needed. Large fans are always needed to pressurize a stairwell that has heat and flames on the other side of the door that leads into the hallway of the hotel.

“The staff here has been very accommodating, professional and cordial,” Lewis said. “They have bent over backwards to be great hosts and will be involved in a drill, interacting with our crews so they can actually run an incident.”

Battalion Chief Chad Durrance has been with Pechanga Fire Department for 22 years. He provided support for the walkthroughs that the students took on Wednesday so they could familiarize themselves with the layout and where things were located. When performing simulations on Thursday and Friday, they learned where to find the systems and water supply or how to get the hoses up to the fifth-floor stairwell, if that is the area they were assigned to for the drill.

“Every step of the way, we do evaluations and answer any questions; it helps reinforce everything they learn and helps them be more successful,” Durrance said.

Two firefighters participate in a high-rise incident drill at the Soboba Hotel, Nov. 8.

Lewis said learning fire behavior is key to any firefighting effort and that interiors with certain finishes and plastic elements can potentially release flammable vapors and harmful gases and chemicals put into the air (off-gassing). He also explained that furnishings and walls absorb heat. “Picture a sponge so saturated with water that one more drop will cause it to release one drop,” he said. “The same thing happens when heat is absorbed; once full, it will radiate heat back into the room (thermal radiation feedback).”

It is not as simple as aiming a water hose at flames when it comes to gaining control of a fire. There is a lot of math involved. The water pressure in the hose must be adjusted to ensure there will be at least 50 PSI at the nozzle, for instance.

Ladder trucks, which are considered rolling toolboxes, are staged outside the Soboba Hotel during the high-rise incident training for more than 50 firefighters.

Angel Hendrie has been a firefighter for 29 years, 18 of which have been working for CAL FIRE. She loves her job because “every day is different.” She said, “I have literally climbed trees to rescue cats – you don’t know what you are going to get each day or who you’re going to meet.”

She said the high-rise incident training has been very helpful and has helped her feel more prepared should she be called to assist with such a fire. “It gives me a broader picture,” Hendrie, of San Diego, said. “It’s so easy to do (drills) in the fire station but being here and utilizing a real structure? In that sense, it’s very realistic. I have learned so much. I’m so thankful that the (Soboba) Tribe is allowing us to do this.”

The Event Center at Soboba Casino Resort was transformed into a German destination as it hosted its third year of Oktoberfest, a very social event that has become extremely popular with guests. With nearly 20 sweet and savory food stations, a German polka band, games and more than a dozen varieties of beers, of course, there was something for everyone at the Oct. 5 event.

The German desserts were very popular as were the pretzels, bratwurst and pork knuckles. There was a very diverse menu of German food offerings typically not served at Soboba Casino Resort so even regulars such as Kim Corey enjoyed the opportunity to try some new things.

“I come to Soboba all the time, but I’ve never been to this event,” said Corey of Ontario, who was there celebrating with her son as an early birthday gift to him. Joseph, who lives in San Bernardino, said he found the food he had tried so far to be pretty authentic. “The pork knuckles, currywurst and the half chicken (Wiesn-Hendl, which is a beer-marinated half roasted chicken) were really good; they hit all the bases on food,” he said.

More commonly known items, such as frankfurters, bratwurst, sauerbraten, knackwurst and oversized soft pretzels with dipping sauces were very popular purchases. Also available were Lebkuchenhertz (gingerbread hearts), Kirschmichel (cherry bread pudding with vanilla sauce), jagerschnitzel (roast pork in mushroom gravy) and other traditional German dishes.

“The culinary team loves this event because they get to flex their culinary expertise and produce amazing food offerings that are not on our usual menus,” SCR Chief Marketing Officer Martin Moore said.

Ticket holders were given a souvenir glass beer stein, three $5 tickets to purchase food or beverages, a voucher for $5 in free slot play to use at the casino and a raffle ticket for some exciting prizes offered at the end of the 4-9 p.m. celebration.

“Along with the great food and awesome beers offered, everyone had a great time with the Bavarian Beergarden Band and their sing-alongs and polkas,” Moore said. “They put on a great show, and everyone loves their act. The Chicken Dance is always a crowd favorite.”

Headed by Joe Dyke, the band facilitated a felt hat game for kids and a stein holding contest for adults, along with other entertaining, friendly competitions throughout the evening. Kids were able to take handfuls of candy from a large bag after winning their round of the game that was held on the large dance floor in front of the stage. Other games offered fabulous prizes courtesy of the Soboba Casino Resort.

Staff, who greeted guests at the entrance and mingled with them throughout the venue, were dressed appropriately in Dirndl dresses and Lederhosen. Those who assisted at some of the beer and food stations were dressed more casually with T-shirts emblazoned with I love Oktoberfest on the back. A large pretzel design served as a heart shape to represent the word love.

Some of the attendees were also dressed in traditional German Bavarian attire. Adrian and Ana Jacquez and longtime friends Greg Lopez and Elizabeth Torres came from Perris to enjoy the event. All but Elizabeth had recently returned from an 8-day trip to Munich where they attended the German city’s 189th Oktoberfest. Ana said they also did some sightseeing while in Europe and were attending the Soboba event in celebration of Greg’s birthday.

Adrian said while the beers that were available tasted good, they suggested the inclusion of German beers at the next event. Adrian cited Pauliner and Hofbräuhaus Anno Múnchen beers as being the best they have ever tasted.

“The entire staff at Soboba Casino Resort contributes in a big way to making this event so special for our guests,” Moore said. “Everyone from Food & Beverage, Banquets, Facilities, Housekeeping, Security, Marketing, Hotel to our teams out on the casino floor in Slots and Table Games taking care of the guests when they need to have even more fun in the casino. It is a huge team effort from each and every team member at Soboba Casino Resort.”

Joseph Corey, left, and his mom Kim Corey use Soboba’s Oktoberfest as an early celebration for Joseph’s upcoming birthday.

Vendors poured 10- or 20-ounce servings of beer and shared the highlights of their offerings. Matt Mertz with Firestone Walker Brewing Company in Paso Robles shared the microbrewery’s 805, which is a blonde ale and Mexican lager blend, Mind Haze IPA and Cali Squeeze, a citrus wheat ale, that comes in blood orange, tangerine and lime flavors.

“We have events at our location, but this is my first (outside) event with the company and it’s been great here,” Mertz said. “I like telling people about our brand. We sponsor surfers, skateboarders and motorcyclists.”

Soboba Casino Resort food and beverage team members love Oktoberfest, as evidenced by their festive t-shirts.

Chris Grimes, marketing manager for Lagunitas, said the brewing company is known for having the No. 1 IPA in the country. Located in Northern California and well known since 1993, representatives were serving its flagship IPA, Beast of Both Worlds IPA and Island Beats IPA. Like the other beer stations, customized flags, drink koozies and bottle/can openers were available as takeaways for all visitors. There was also a corner of the room set aside for the purchase of wines and cordials for those that wanted something other than beer.

Soboba Casino Resort team members stand ready to serve guests to the 3rd Oktoberfest celebration at the Event Center, Oct. 5.

Moore said staff start planning for the next annual event immediately following the conclusion of the current one. “We discuss what went well, what we could do to make the event better, what food and beverage items were the most popular and any notable guest comments,” he said. “We address any issues or problems that might have come up and how to resolve them. We continue to meet throughout the year to ensure we are not missing any key items. We discuss menus and various vendors we want to reach out to. It is a very lengthy and detailed process.”

Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians | Contributed

Live boxing is coming to the Soboba Casino Resort Event Center on Feb. 15 and it promises to be an exciting evening of entertainment. Emceed by comedian Jerry Garcia, the loaded card will feature 10 bouts featuring some of the best up-and-coming boxers in the sport.

Toro Promotions Inc., House of Pain So Cal Boxing and Black House have joined forces to create a fun night for lovers of the sport and the comedy that will be part of the event. House of Pain So Cal Boxing has just become the newest boxing promotion company in the Inland Empire. The boxing and fitness club is operated by Dave and Mary Trujillo who are both enrolled Native American Apache Indians. Dave is the North American Ambassador for the NDE Apache Tribe.

One reason the promotion company was created was to provide a gateway and an avenue for boxers who are birthed from the House of Pain So Cal Boxing Mentorship Program. Soboba Tribal member Jimmie “El Chingon” Nunez, David Longoria Trujillo, Ian “The Captain” Morgan and Daniel “Larana” Ramos started with the program, either with coaching or going through the program themselves. All four will be part of the upcoming event.

“As the youth go through our amateur boxing program, they can step up and become professional boxers,” Dave Trujillo said. “The House of Pain team also provides management for them to help them with their careers and now it will serve as their promoter. As promoters, we have built an amazing network with most of the larger promoters out there who we work with side by side, such as Toro Promotions, who we have partnered up with for our first event here at Soboba. With this network, there will be no limits as to the heights House of Pain So Cal Boxing can achieve.”

With a strong team supporting him, Soboba’s Jimmie “El Chingon” Nunez Jr. is looking to improve his boxing record at the upcoming Punches & Punchlines show at SCR, Feb. 15. From left, Hall of Fame and 5X Cutman of the Year Sergio “Big Serg” Estrada; Cesar Garcia, Black House Boxing; Coach Dave Trujillo, House of Pain So Cal; Nunez; and Coach Kenny Finister, Brigada Elite.

The Temecula-based facility is partnering with Soboba Casino Resort to bring positive and professional events to the Event Center in San Jacinto and Trujillo said, “Our goal is to help everyone and we also focus on Native American boxers through our Mentorship Program and our professional boxing promotions. We try to seek and find where we can help Native Americans who are coming from all over North America. It is our passion and will continue to be our life’s work.”

With his current record of 5 wins and 2 losses, all by knockout, Nunez, who turned pro in May of 2022, is thrilled to finally realize his dream to be fighting on his home turf at Soboba. “It’s actually still a little hard to believe, mind-blowing to say the least,” he said. “I have an amazing team that works just as hard as I do but on the business end of things and of course none of this is possible without the Big Man upstairs.”

Prepping hard as he does for all of his fights, Nunez, 28, is putting in a lot of cardio training to meet the demands of this high-endurance sport. He also spends a lot of time sparring as he feels the best way to learn how to fight is to fight. He will be facing off against a new opponent but said, “I’m definitely looking to compete with the opponents I took losses from to show my improvement.”

Trujillo, who has been training with Nunez for the past few years, said, “I am in awe for this incredible young man who is true to his dreams, his daughter Mila and whomever will follow his lead from the depths of poverty, gang violence, drugs, alcohol and all the generational curses that we carry with us,” he said. “His sobriety has helped him grow as an incredible, respectful young man.”

Trujillo said he has never seen Jimmie so powerful and strong coming into a fight with major drilling hours upon hours and miles upon miles. “I have said it before and I will say it again; It’s our Creator, Father God who is paving the way for us all,” he added. “We just keep the faith and follow his lead and he will provide us with what he feels we are deserving of.”

Also on the card will be David Longoria Trujillo, who is Apache Indian (NDE Apache Tribe); his children are Luiseño from Pechanga Indian Reservation. The athlete is entering back into the boxing world after having taken a very long vacation. As an amateur, he has been trained by Kevin Morgan who was with Coach Freddy Roach at Wild Card Boxing in LA. Then, as a young prospect, Longoria Trujillo was advised by Golden Boy Promotions CFO Raul Guttierez and Matchmaker Roberto Diaz to train in Indio with Joel Diaz where he was to turn pro in 2011. At that time, the young fighter elected to dedicate his time to being a family man and enjoy life with raising his children. He now has four daughters and one son. Longoria Trujillo has always kept himself in phenomenal shape and at 36 years of age returned to the ring to fulfill a lifelong dream. He now holds a record of 2-0 with 2 KOs at Cruiserweight, looking to add a third KO to his resume at the SCR Event Center.

Ian “The Captain” Morgan is a 23-year-old Heavyweight prospect who is a remarkable young man that has achieved multiple statuses. He is a commercial airline pilot, skydiver and instructor and an entrepreneur who owns Morgan Disposal in Southern California. Morgan’s record is 1-2-0 and he is seeking to make it even to 2-2-0. He has come down from over 300 pounds to 225 and will continue to drop and become a Cruiserweight after this final Heavyweight bout.

Another fighter, coming from P-Town Boxing Academy, is William “El Gallo Negro” King. With a record of 5-1-1 with 2 KOs under his belt at Super Lightweight, King is an amazing prospect that Coach Angel Ochoa and Angel Ochoa Jr. have bred locally in Perris. “His boxing skills are what makes him so entertaining, and he will put on a show for us all to see,” Trujillo said. “It’s our pleasure to have him and his coaches on the card.”

The treat of having comedian Jerry Garcia emcee the event came about through Trujillo’s partner Cesar Garcia of Black House Boxing. “Cesar is and has been in multiple aspects of not only the boxing world but also show business including being a boxing manager and a promoter in Mexico with Grito De Guerra Boxing Promotions.”

Cesar Garcia said he is bringing his event promoting experience and contacts to help make this a top-notch event. “None of my boxers are on this card but hopefully this will lead to opportunities for them in the future,” he said. Being a fan of comedian Jerry Garcia for a long time, Cesar reached out to him specifically about this show. He said, “We are trying a new concept of mixing boxing and comedy and he agreed to try and make it happen.”

Jerry said he is excited to bring something new and refreshing to the art of comedy by bringing two entertainment powerhouses together: boxing and comedy. “This will be my first time at Soboba and I’m looking forward to some knockout punches and knockout jokes,” he said.

On Feb. 14 at 1 p.m., there will be a meet and greet with Jerry Garcia and the boxers during their official weigh-in at the Cabaret Bar inside the Soboba Casino, 22777 Soboba Road in San Jacinto. This event will be free and open to the public.
