The fourth annual Bingo Night fundraiser was not only a success for the Soboba Tribal Preschool students who will benefit from the proceeds but for the 400 players who filled the Soboba Sports Complex for a fun night on March 6.

Preschool Administrator Lenora “Ponie” Mojado thanked everyone for coming to support the children who will be able to take more field trips and have added classroom enhancements because of their generosity.

“Thank you so much for coming out tonight,” Mojado said. “This helps the preschool and kindergarten classes take trips throughout the whole school year. I want to say a special thanks to the preschool families who donated baskets, bingo items, and food for the preschool snack shack. We wouldn’t be here without you. I also want to give a big shout-out to the preschool parents, families, cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents who helped the preschool during this entire school year. We truly couldn’t have done it without your support.”

Virginia and Albert Duenaz, pastors at Kut’ – Poki Soboba Lighthouse, get ready for the next round of Bingo during the March 6 fundraiser.

Aside from the $20 admission ticket which included a delicious dinner by Tribal Chef Anita Morillo and crew plus four Bingo cards, raffle tickets, additional game cards and a 50-50 drawing opportunity were made available. The response was overwhelming as guests lined up to purchase more chances to win.

Geneva Mojado and Monica Herrera welcomed the sold-out crowd on behalf of the entire Tribal Council. They also assisted with those wishing to purchase additional cards or tickets and introduced the current Daughter of Soboba ($óvoova Po’$wáamay) Su’la Arviso, who was also lending a hand throughout the evening.

It wasn’t just community members who attended to have a great meal, spend time with family and friends and have a chance of winning some amazing prizes. All staff members from the preschool joined in to help out in many different ways. Most notably is the time they spent collecting donations for the 76 outstanding raffle prize baskets that filled tables across the front of the room. Weeks of preparation included selling all of the tickets before the big night.

Soboba Foundation Secretary Joey Placencia congratulates Marian Chacon on her bingo game win at the Soboba Sports Complex.

The event also brought out volunteers from the Soboba Youth Council and members of the Four Directions club who earned high school community service hours for their work serving up pasta dinners, helping with raffle prize giveaways and more.

Raya Salgado, Chairwoman of Soboba Youth Council and Vice President of the Four Directions club at San Jacinto High School where she is a sophomore, was happy to help wherever she was needed. Joining Raya to assist with the fundraiser were fellow Soboba Youth Council members Shania Guacheno and Noyaaykit Silvas and fellow Four Directions club members President Moyla Arviso, Secretary Ginger Velazquez, Lokelani Basquez, Aisha Kabeer, and Irene Cervantes.

Pepe Figueroa, left, completes the cup stacking tiebreaker to win $200 in the second bingo game of the night.

The Soboba Youth Council is hosting their own Bingo Night on June 12 from 6-8 p.m. It will be similar in structure, and they are hoping to attract game lovers from all over to participate.

Although Raya’s time was donated, she didn’t go home empty handed. Her father Jerome Salgado bought a lot of raffle tickets, and it paid off very well. One of the baskets he won contained an Insta360 action camera that Raya has been saving up to buy. As a photographer for school and community functions and sporting events, she has shared her talent and skill with many outlets.

Guests were able to put tickets in the boxes for the raffle prizes they liked best, so all lucky winners went home with something they truly wanted or needed. Buckets geared to movie nights and game nights were popular with families and children-themed buckets got the preschoolers excited.

Cellophane covered baskets and buckets ran the gamut from a variety of kitchen items such as air fryers, cookware and coffee pots to an outdoor gas BBQ grill. Soboba Rx compiled health-related items for men, women and children. Preschoolers who were attending the event with their parents had a say in which tickets were placed inside the box in front of baskets filled with activities geared toward the young set such as toys, games and plushies.

A sold-out crowd of 400-plus turn out for the 4th annual Soboba Tribal Preschool Bingo Night Fundraiser.

Soboba Tribal Environmental Department provided a bucket filled with energy-saving devices and a gift card for Roadrunner Express. Raising Cane’s donated one filled with Cane’s merchandise and a gift card for their chicken meals. Two portable generators and a 70-inch Roku TV attracted a lot of attention and a camping bundle proved there was something for everyone. Soboba Casino Resort offered a two-night deluxe room stay that included a round of golf for two, a voucher for $100 in slot play and a $200 dining credit at their award-winning Canyons Steakhouse.

Tellez Party Rentals donated a free jumper rental that included a cake from JT Bakes and the Noli Beading Club’s basket had beautiful jewelry pieces plus a children’s beading kit. Two Angels baseball baskets featured team merchandise and two admission tickets, courtesy of Leland Razon.

Soboba Foundation Sponsorship Coordinator Andrew Vallejos emceed the event for the third year in a row. As always, he kept the event flowing with his energetic and engaging style.

Pastors Albert and Virginia Duenaz of the Kut’-Poki Soboba Lighthouse church came to support the preschool where their granddaughter attends. She is a student in Ana Garcia’s pre-kindergarten class. Both help out at the school whenever they can.

Garcia was among the teachers that led tiebreaker games for two of the Bingo games. The first one resulted in a three-way tie. It was a preschool-themed color game where Garcia rapidly called out color names and contestants had to touch any one of the color sheets except that one. It took a few minutes, but Carrie Garcia eventually emerged the winner of the $200 payout.

Daughter of Soboba Su’la Arviso helps serve dinner, along with other youth from various programs.

The next tiebreaker resulted in a head-to-head cup stacking competition, also a favorite preschool activity. Preschool teacher Julissa Garcia explained that the two contestants had to stack 15 red SOLO cups on top of each other and then had to separate them out to create a pyramid of rows consisting of 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 stacked cups, using only one hand. Pepe Figueroa won and walked away with $200 cash. The third Bingo game was a solo win by Marian Chacon with no tiebreaker game needed. Although the fourth game, which was a blackout Bingo, resulted in a tie between Donna Hulstrom and Kristie Shear, they opted to split the prize money.

For players that wanted more action, additional game cards were available for purchase. Additionally, thanks to a generous donation from Alyssa Soza and Junior Medina, whose son Kavikvish Medina is a Pre-K student, two extra rounds of bingo were offered to those that purchased two special cards for $20. Each of those blackout games had a $500 payout.

Another moneymaker for the preschool was the presence of a snack shack offering all kinds of sweet treats and snack items. The popcorn machine was going nonstop as guests of all ages wanted some. Tara Placencia has volunteered to oversee the operation all four years as she has lots of experience running concession stands at various community events. She was happy to help knowing all the money raised is going back to the preschool. Placencia also donated and served her delicious iced tea and sweet tea, a perennial favorite.

Ponie Mojado ended the evening by giving a shout to all those whose participation and support before and during the event made its success possible. They are Tribal Council, Tribal Executive Officer Steven Estrada, Andrew Vallejos, Preschool Administrative Assistant Maria Hernandez, teachers and staff Julissa Garcia, Jess Thompson, Ana Garcia, Amanda Juarez, Alaina Adkins, Jasmine Basquez, and Rachelle Peterson. She also thanked “amazing chefs Anita, Arlene, Arturo, Perry, and pool staff who helped” along with SCR and staff Corryn Salgado Flores, Johnny Frandsen, and the Soboba Sports Complex. Those who pitched in from Tribal Administration included Ulises Pedroza, Bernadette Jones, Darlene Adkins and Jasmine Robinson, Miguel Rodriguez from IT and members of the Soboba Foundation. Other departments who stepped up were Tribal Family Services, TANF, Soboba Rx, SEDC, Roadrunner Express, and Noli Indian School’s Beading Club. Community partners were In-N-Out, Los Portales Taco Shop, Roscoe’s Promotions, Texas Roadhouse, Raising Cane’s, Stater Bros., LuLu Lounge, Tellez Party Rental, The Bay Customs, JT Bakes, Nails by Leslie, and the Daughter of Soboba Committee.

Marie McMurray, left, and Leland Razon split the prize money from one of the special Bingo blackout games rather than face a tiebreaker.

“Families that helped with organizing and donating baskets were Joey Placencia, Tara Placencia Taryn Placencia, Buster Mojado, Leland and Sunnie Razon, Marian and Hope Chacon, Pamela Miranda, Jillian Miranda and Aayla Sanchez, Sierra Vivanco Mendez, Alyssa Soza, Junior Medina, Crystal Maxcy, Louis Cervantes, Jamie Brittian, Taylor Girard, and Tanya Briones,” Mojado said. “We also had help from Soboba Youth Council, TANF We Lead members and the SJHS Four Directions Club. That’s a long list of incredible people and departments that care so much for our preschool children. We truly appreciate everyone’s support.”

Tickets for Soboba Youth Council’s Bingo Night on June 12 are on sale now at the Soboba Sports Complex for $25 each, which includes dinner and four game cards. Please contact Kaitlyn or Andy at 951-654-1319 with any questions.

RIVERSIDE, CA — For the first time in four years, Notre Dame High School in Riverside bested teams from multiple campuses throughout Riverside County to win the county’s annual Mock Trial Competition, it was announced Friday.

The contest’s final round was held late Thursday afternoon at the Riverside Historic Courthouse, where Notre Dame High squared off with MLK High, also in the Riverside Unified School District, culminating in Notre Dame’s team racking up the highest score to be crowned champions.

The 44th annual trials got underway in mid January, and over the monthlong period, teams from more than two dozen campuses participated. The last time Notre Dame High captured the championship title was February 2022.

“Congratulations to all the student competitors who exhibited extraordinary poise and professionalism that powerfully demonstrates how competitions like the Riverside County Mock Trial are preparing them for a future in the legal field, in higher education and endless opportunities,” county Superintendent of Schools Edwin Gomez said. “I look forward to seeing the county’s top team from Notre Dame High School compete for a state championship.”

The team will now represent the county at the California Mock Trial Competition, slated for March 20-22 in Oakland.

The Office of Education, in partnership with the Constitutional Rights Foundation, Riverside County Bar Association and the Superior Court, sponsor the local competitions annually. The county began holding student-level mock trials in 1983. More than 14,000 youths have participated since then, organizers said.

This year’s contest challenged participants to successfully argue the fictitious case of “People v. Fromholz,” involving an alleged retribution murder tied to outrage felt by the defendant over his encounter with a food critic, who found the man’s cuisine unpalatable — and said so publicly.

Students were tasked with analyzing forensic evidence, admissibility of statements, possible due process infringements and other matters during the trials. There were 26 teams registered for the opening round last month. They consisted of eight to 25 students playing the parts of deputy district attorneys, defense attorneys, bailiffs, witnesses, clerks and investigators.

Contestants were given allotted time, about four to six minutes, at each stage of a proceeding, including opening statements, closing arguments and cross-examinations. Practicing attorneys and judges assessed students’ performance, awarding points in accordance with criteria established for the contest.

MLK High took second place this year, while Poly High School and Ramona High School, both in the Riverside Unified School District, shared third place.

Poly High won the county’s 2025 contest, repeating on its victory in 2024.

Middle and high school students at Noli Indian School on the Soboba Reservation were honored for their outstanding performances in the first semester of the 2025-2026 academic year. Principal Donovan Post greeted supportive friends and family members who attended the ceremony at the Soboba Sports Complex on Jan. 29.

“It takes a team effort, not just the staff, but with the families, too,” Post said. “It takes working together to get things done and this is the end result of the love and support you provide. We have students who are successful and moving forward so we appreciate you for everything you do.”

The celebration was divided into two sessions, which began with the middle school. Emcee Jacquelin Phillips announced the students who made the Honor Roll by earning a GPA of 3.0-3.49. They are Gabriel Gladin, Jose Leon, Ayashe Miranda, Meeqas Soto, Ashwut Castello, Carter Covington, Veronica Kolb, Aswet Luna-Malone, Mary Rose Morreo, and Ashkii Ortiz.

The next group called to the front to receive their medal and certificate were those who made the Distinguished Honor Roll with a GPA of 3.5-3.99. Those students are Jaylynne Lagunas, Nayelli Miranda, Tulovat Temanxwanvish, Aiyana Diaz, Navaya Masiel, Josiah Porter, Aydreean Garcia, Sally Lopez-Reyes, Nadillyn Mendoza, Monica Rivera, and Avasily Temanxwanvish.

One outstanding student received a medal, certificate and Principal’s Award plaque for a perfect 4.0 GPA. Sixth-grader Marilyn Mendoza was congratulated and recognized for this achievement.

Post then announced, “We have one child in the entire school who has that perfect attendance and Ms. Phillips added a Starbucks gift card to her award because this is something that is very difficult to get these days. This award is like one of those 300-win pitchers. It’s something you just don’t see anymore so it’s an outstanding achievement. Congratulations Avasily Temanxwanvish.”

Teachers were asked to vote for the student in each grade they felt demonstrated the best leadership/citizenship qualities, the one who showed outstanding improvement and the one who best embodies the school’s core values of the 3Rs—respect, responsibility and reflection.

Phillips announced the middle school students singled out for Outstanding Citizenship awards. They are Jose Leon, Aswet Luna-Malone, and Monica Rivera. Those who earned 3R awards are Marilyn Mendoza, Mary Rose Morreo, and Aydreean Garcia.

Post introduced the Outstanding Improvement students and said he loves giving out this award each year because these students do something out of the ordinary. He said they don’t give up and show a lot of resilience, perseverance, and the ability to get outside their comfort zone and ask for help.

“This could mean asking a teacher for extra help, working with a tutor or finding a friend to help them overcome an obstacle,” he said. “To me, this award shows a lot more of what these kids have going on. I find that these kids will be successful in college and beyond because it’s all about overcoming obstacles. It doesn’t matter how gifted you are academically or financially, everyone runs into a wall at some point, and these kids have shown that they can figure it out or know where to get help to climb over that wall and keep moving forward. That’s why I think this award means a lot to me.”

He congratulated the following middle school students who came forward to receive their medal and certificate. They are Kyle Kolb, Navaya Masiel, and Sukutt Morreo.

Individual teachers gave certificates to students who have gone over and beyond in their classrooms. Tashina Ornelas teaches culture classes for sixth graders this year. She said all her students did great in the first semester with almost all of them earning an A.

“I’m looking for a student who pushes beyond and isn’t just doing what I expect them to do or what I ask them to do,” she said. “They are trying to help me out, they are making a point every day to be here, and they make the effort and to give back to the community too. So, one of the students who has been really good for me in Beading Club as well is Jaylynne Lagunas. She is a great student and is always pushing herself so I’m really proud of her.”

English teacher Emma Herrera recognized students she felt made connections with the subject and put forth great effort. They are Sally Lopez-Reyes and Aydreean Garcia. She also teaches eighth-grade culture classes and said Avasily Temanxwanvish and Samuel Venegas exhibited the core values and great attitude she was looking for in her students.

Sabrina Smith teaches science and assists Andrea Duran with the AVID program. She presented Aiyana Diaz and Monica Rivera with AVID awards. Sixth grade students who had their first introduction to AVID and responded well to learning about the program are Marilyn Mendoza, Jose Leon, and Gabriel Gladin.

Receiving Excellence in Science certificates are Jaylynne Lagunas, Tulovat Temanxwanvish, Nayelli Miranda, Ashkii Ortiz, Aiyana Diaz, Avasily Temanxwanvish, and Monica Rivera.

“These students are not just strong in science, but they are students who have persisted through any struggle,” Smith said. “These are students who have offered to help other students, to be leaders in that class.”

History teacher Justin Thillens gave awards for Scholarly Excellence to Jose Leon, Marilyn Mendoza, Mary Rose Morreo, and Nadillyn Mendoza. Awardees who showed the spirit of historical inquiry and got really interested in the content and material and asked lots of questions were Aswet Luna-Malone and Gabriel Gladin.

Excellence in Math awards were received by Monica Rivera, Sally Lopez-Reyes, and Avasily Temanxwanvish. Their teacher, Kekei Bryant, also treated them with a Raising Cane’s gift certificate. Jonathon Ruiz, who teaches math for grades 6 and 7, along with his duties as Athletic Director for the school and Physical Education teacher, awarded certificates for excellence in math to sixth graders Jaylynne Lagunas, Jose Leon, Marilyn Mendoza, Ayashe Miranda, Tulovat Temanxwanvish, and Nayelli Miranda. Seventh-grade math students he honored are Ashwut Castello, Veronica Kolb, Mary Rose Morreo, and Josiah Porter.

Excellence in Physical Education went to students who are working hard. They are Avasily Temanxwanvish, Brian Moreno-Ortiz, Monica Rivera, Ashkii Ortiz, and Kisil Morreo.

With a short break between the celebrations, some parents and other family members stayed in their seats in the bleachers because they have multiple students at Noli. Post welcomed all the attendees as high school students took their seats.

“We are teachers and we are also parents, so we understand everything that goes into helping your kids be successful so thank you for all you do,” he said. “As much as we want to reward the students for everything they’ve done, we have to thank parents and other family members who have contributed to their success through love and support.”

The Hemet/San Jacinto Student of the Month program held its most recent recognition breakfast at the Maze Stone at Soboba Springs Golf Course on Oct. 9. Seven local high school seniors were recognized and honored for their character, love of learning and commitment to academics in addition to their involvement in school and community activities and their ability and resiliency in overcoming difficult life challenges. And they do this all in a setting that honors God, country, family, community and free enterprise. Students are nominated by teachers or other school personnel for making a difference in their homes, schools and communities.

Local program founder and Student of the Month Committee member Karena Zermeno-Leon emceed the event. Each student was invited to the podium to share their personal story, past and/or current challenges and future goals with a room full of supporters that included principals, teachers, peers and family members, as well as community and school district dignitaries.

October’s students of the month from Hemet Unified School District are Emily Campos, Amaya Garcia, Natalie Lovett Jensen and Zena Pastrana. San Jacinto Unified honorees for October are Erik Diaz, Angel Sanchez and Christian “CJ” Viramontes.

Hemet Unified School District

Emily Campos

Alessandro High School Principal Matthew Centofranchi said Emily is on a path to making the right decisions, building a path for her future. Emily said that something she learned in her civics class helped her change her perspective on school. “My teacher said to treat school like I would my job—show up, clock in, do the work,” she said. “Now I see my report card like I do a paycheck. My hard work is paying off, and I am currently a straight-A student.” Last year, her English teacher told her she had “teacher energy” and those words stayed with Emily. She plans to major in psychology at Mt. San Jacinto College to become a teacher or therapist. “In the future, I want to give back to my community by using my education to guide and support others,” she said. “The most important lesson I will take with me to college is the idea of sonder, the realization that every person has a life as vivid and complex as your own,” Emily said. “Remembering that concept has taught me patience and understanding and this reminds me every day to treat people with kindness because we never truly know what someone may be going through. I want to thank Alessandro for giving me a second chance; real change starts with all of us.”

Amaya Garcia

Hamilton High School Principal Kari Sanchez explained that her school is unique in that it serves students in grades 6-12. She said Amaya enrolled as an eighth grader after having experienced some adversity in her life. Art teacher Rose Fickes nominated Amaya for recognition this month and said she stands out for her creativity and leads by example. The senior was unable to attend the ceremony due to the passing of her grandmother but she prepared a speech that Fickes read on her behalf. Amaya said her single mother taught her what real strength looks like even when things get hard. “I work while going to school which isn’t always easy, but it taught me how to manage my time, stay responsible and push through even when I’m tired,” she wrote. “I believe my greatest contribution is my resilience, refusing to give up no matter what I’ve been through. Growing up, I faced many challenges from leaving loved ones to experiencing trauma that no child should ever face. I struggled with depression and anxiety and there were moments when life felt unbearable.” She plans to attend San Diego Mesa College and eventually study medicine. “My dream is to become a doctor,” Amaya said. “I want to be proof that it’s possible to rise from anything.”

Natalie Lovett Jensen

Hemet High School chose to honor Natalie for October and teacher James Walsh read comments from counselor Dawn Sonnier who co-nominated her but could not attend the breakfast. Sonnier has known Natalie since she was a young girl growing up in Idyllwild. Of the 564 seniors in her class, Natalie is ranked second. She hopes to attend UCLA’s nursing program after graduation. Natalie said, “When I was 10 years old, my oldest sister overdosed on opioids. This was a huge burden of grief for my whole family and something that changed my perspective on life forever. My parents, grief stricken and angry at the world, began to take their frustrations out on me. Between the belittling I faced at home and the bullying I faced from my peers at school, I lived in constant feelings of unworthiness. My insecurity loomed over me like a storm waiting to break.” After battling low self-esteem in her middle school years, Natalie began to dedicate herself to her schoolwork. She said the classroom provided a space for her where she felt confident and capable. This helped her to develop a passion for learning. She was also able to take on volunteer work at her church. After her speech, Principal Jeff Franks told her, “Natalie, there is nothing small about the impact you make on all of us.”

Zena Pastrana

West Valley High School ASB and yearbook teacher Billy Valenzuela has been a mentor to Zena for the past three years. In trying to sum up the outstanding senior in one word, he decided on “dynamo.” He said she generates power and a consistent positive school spirit. “She always has a can-do spirit that is infectious to others and makes the entire school a better place,” Valenzuela said. Zena is a four-sport varsity athlete, competing in swim, water polo, volleyball and the school’s first girls’ flag football team. “Under her leadership, we have some of the highest participation rates the school has ever seen and this creates a positive experience for all students,” he said. Zena believes her greatest contribution to her school is her positive attitude and her willingness to be a helpful role model. She plans to attend Riverside Community College before heading to dental school to become an orthodontist. “A major challenge during high school was when my mom had kidney failure,” Zena said. “The strongest woman in my life needed help from medical professionals and me.” This created feelings of anxiety and stress at home, affecting the entire family. Her mother has since received a successful kidney transplant. “The major takeaway is that God will provide the strength to help you with your trials so that we may overcome the greatest pains in life,” Zena said.

She was honored by Hamilton High School Principal Kari Sanchez, shown here, and art teacher Rose Fickes.

San Jacinto Unified School District

Erik Diaz

San Jacinto High School chose to honor Erik, who Principal Lloyd Sheppard recalled meeting in 2019 when they were at the same event and both sporting bowties. Industrial Wood Technology teacher Roy Castillo told Erik, “Your pursuit of commitment and willingness to not hesitate in participation will continue to set you aside and showcase your achievements.” Angel has been captain of the cross-country team since his sophomore year and was named his team’s MVP last season. He has won trophies for his outstanding table woodwork. “Outside of athletics and academics, I’m actively involved in extracurricular activities such as Tiger Media Design, which is a club focused on photography; Tiger Media Network, which focuses on video production and live streaming; and I’m also a proud member of our MEChA Club, which helps promote Latino culture within our school and the broader community.” Participating in track since sixth grade and then joining the wrestling team, Erik found himself in an emotionally unstable place when he suffered a sports injury last year that sidelined him for four months. After high school, he plans to serve a mission for his church and then hopes to attend Brigham Young University alongside his brother, studying something related to woodworking or photography. “These are two of my passions which I’ve grown to love, especially during my injury,” Erik said.

Angel Sanchez

Mountain View High School selected Angel as its Student of the Month. His teacher Tricia Ochoa said when Angel first arrived at the school he was not always motivated regarding academics and that he didn’t always believe in himself. “What makes Angel truly stand out is the way he decided to turn that story around,” Ochoa said. “Through effort, maturity, and a genuine commitment to improving, Angel transformed his attitude toward learning.” He said, “Being at Mountain View for two years has taught me to be a better version of myself. An important lesson I’ve learned is that you can accomplish anything in life if you put your effort and dedication towards the goal you are trying to achieve.” Angel said the hardest thing he had to overcome when he started at the school was his shyness. But he was able to adapt and flourish and is now on track to graduate early. “If there is anyone that feels the same way I felt just remember, you’re a human being—keep going forward no matter what occurs in life,” Angel said. “There will be ups and downs in life and it’s your choice if you want to keep going or stay in the same place you are in.” He plans to attend MSJC with the eventual goal of opening his own electrician business.

Christian “CJ” Viramontes was chosen to represent San Jacinto Leadership Academy. Since enrolling at the school at the end of eighth grade, his history teacher Alfredo Gonzalez said CJ became a leader in his class. He said he has no doubt that no matter what, CJ will overcome any obstacle that comes his way. “Every day we are faced with some sort of decision,” CJ said. “The decisions you make today, tomorrow, and the next day matter.” He said he learned that lesson firsthand. Before he made the decision to attend SJLA, he had suicidal thoughts, depression and mentally was not there. “I was broken,” he said. “Getting welcomed to SJLA by every cadet (student) was amazing.” CJ said he didn’t think about attending college until one of his teachers changed his mind through encouragement. Now he plans to attend MSJC to major in journalism. He said the two most important people in his life are his grandfather and his mother. He then addressed Principal Mike Luna. “Mr. Luna, thank you for giving a kid with no hope a reason. Every conversation you have, not only with me but with all students, we cherish it,” CJ said. “We see your hard work and for that we thank you.”

The Soboba Parks and Recreation’s Halloween Carnival attracted some of the cutest and the scariest costumed visitors to the Sports Complex on Saturday, Oct. 18. The three-hour “Ghostbusters” themed event was enjoyed by families who participated in games set up at booths around the perimeter of the grassy activity area. They were also treated to a delicious dinner of barbecued chicken, macaroni and cheese, corn on the cob, salad and rolls, all prepared by Tribal Chef Anita Morillo and staff.

DJ Mike Nevarez kept the energy moving with a holiday themed playlist as well as some classic R&B tunes. A large tent was set up nearby that was transformed into a Haunted House for those who dared to enter. The design and construction were a collaborative effort between Soboba Youth Council and the Department of Public Safety. Youth Council President Raya Salgado stayed busy handing out candy as people exited the tent. Children under 12 had to be accompanied by an adult but even so, several were scared enough to run out before completing the entire maze that was set up inside. Marion Chacon and her granddaughter Hope Chacon said the Haunted House was definitely spooky and the person with the chainsaw was especially scary.

“We did a totally different layout this year,” Raya said, adding that the youth council also hosted the horseshoe tournament.

Many Soboba departments hosted booths that offered fun games and lots of treats for successful completion of ring tosses, cornhole, and many other carnival favorites. The Soboba Foundation highlighted the Ghostbusters theme by offering containers of slime for kids to take home, along with their choice of full-size candy bars.

The Noli Indian School Beading Club members and their advisor Tashina Ornelas set up a “Spookley the Square Pumpkin” booth. They also donated quite a few exquisite items to be included in the raffle prizes that DJ Mike was announcing throughout the evening.

The Nevarez family’s game booth was set up next to the DJ station and earned second place in the Booth Decorating Contest. Third place went to Tribal Family Services for their booth that offered a Mardi Gras theme. Each player of the “Catch a Gator” game received a necklace with the gold-, green- and purple-colored beads that are associated with Mardi Gras.

The Soboba Tribal Preschool’s booth took home the first-place win again this year. Always looking to highlight what young children like, they all dressed as characters from the popular “Toy Story” film series. Their booth was decorated with pictures the students had colored, and the teachers helped the youngest visitors with the cornhole game they offered.

The Cultural Department let players try to toss (plastic) body parts into buckets that were scattered throughout a “graveyard.” Staff also offered candy bars and tote bags to carry all the goodies they collected throughout the night.

Avareign Lindsey wears the cutest costume in the 5-7 age group at this year’s Halloween Carnival, Oct. 18.

Su’la Arviso, the reigning Daughter of Soboba, helped out at the $ovóova Po’$wáamay booth, while committee members also pitched in to hand out candy to those who played the games.

Other booths were hosted by the Soboba Tribal Environmental Department, Soboba Fire, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department’s Soboba Team, the McKay Family, the Soboba Tribal Gaming Commission, Soboba Tribal TANF, and Soboba Rx.

The costume contest is an annual favorite and this year it did not disappoint. Three prizes were awarded in each age group category: cutest, scariest, and most creative. Judges had a hard time selecting the best since there were so many great costumes in the parade of entrants that circled around them for several minutes.

Winners in the 0-4 age group were Laylah Robledo, 4, for scariest as she portrayed Michael Myers from the Halloween film series; 11-month-old Apolaki “Lucky” Pabellano for cutest, as a new pumpkin in the patch; and Remy Arrietta, 1, who was covered in pink balloons to represent the bubbles in the gum that was attached to the shoe cutout worn by her sister Emily, was deemed most creative.

The 5-7 age group included Avareign Lindsey, 7, as cutest and Bruce Valdez, 6, as most creative. One of the largest groups turned out to be those aged 8-12. The cutest honors went to Kalila Escalante, 10, as a big bunny and Gilbert Bantancourt, 12, for being the scariest as a green clown. Zaya Essapour, 11, had the most creative costume that depicted his insides pouring out.

“I wanted some really bloody, gory stuff but I wanted to create it myself,” Zaya said. Using pool noodles he painted red to resemble intestines, he glued them to an old shirt and then used more red paint to resemble “gushing guts.”

The most creative among 13–17-year-olds was Trista Cervantes, 15. She wanted to come up with a more adult version of the bogeyman, a mythical creature typically used to frighten children into good behavior, and she succeeded.

Teens get into the spirit of the costume contest while circling the judges at the Soboba Sports Complex, Oct. 18.

John McKay was deemed the most creative for adults, 18 and older, for his authentic looking scarecrow. The cutest was Christina Torres as Glinda the good witch. “I love Wicked,” she said. The scariest title went to Anthony Vallez, who really got into the spirit of the evening with his skeletal costume.

For youngsters who had enough of the dark, one of the baseball fields was well lit and sprinkled with several bounce houses and inflatable slides to play on.

A pumpkin carving contest resulted in Hughnee Briones winning second place for a recreation of a witches’ cauldron and D’ios Basquez took home the top prize for his scary monster pumpkin. Every guest was invited to choose a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch that was set up near the Haunted House. This gives them all time to carve them up for their own Halloween celebrations on Oct. 31.

Prior to Grandparents Day being acknowledged across the nation on Sept. 8, teachers and staff at Soboba Tribal Preschool welcomed families to the Soboba Sports Complex on Friday, Sept. 6 to celebrate. The gymnasium was filled with lots of yellow and orange balloons and signs declaring “You Are My Sunshine” to the invited guests.

After a blessing by Wayne Nelson, the kindergarten class joined him and the Intertribal Bird Singers for a couple of social songs to mark the special occasion. Acting director Donovan Post thanked kindergarten teacher Laura Aldrete and Instructional Aide Elena Vega-Castello for their hard work along with other staff and Tribal Council members for everything they do to support the school. Many of the children were completing their third year as a student at the preschool.

Aldrete said, “Today, as we pay tribute to the young ladies and gentlemen of tomorrow, we know that they have started their remarkable journey towards achieving their goals. This year we have seen them grow and develop exponentially. They have learned so much. They have remained eager and enthusiastic, and they have grown in so many ways. Our thanks and appreciation go out to all the families for the fantastic role you have played in supporting, loving and encouraging your child.”

She then addressed the children directly and said, “Boys and girls, we are very proud of you today; you all are incredibly special. You have all worked very hard every day, you have made friends and have been friendly to others. Congratulations to each and every one of you. I am extremely privileged to have been able to be your teacher. Dream big and remember, each one of you is unique and can do anything.”

The children were then asked to stand and perform their class song. In true “Swifties” fashion, they performed their own version of Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” with lyrics such as “the readers gonna read, read, read, read, read, the writers gonna write, write, write, write, write and I’m gonna do my best, best, best in first grade, first grade.”

Aldrete called each student to the podium to be congratulated and to receive their diploma as she shared a little bit about them. While the majority said what they liked most about school was learning, coloring and playing with friends, their grown-up goals were very diverse. Aria Boniface, Ava’vash Briones and Avareign Lindsey want to be teachers and Marla Bigsby, Ace Covington, Gabriel Herrera III, Legend Macias and Toovit Reed want to be firefighters. Pomoyki Osuna wants to be a firefighter and a boxer while Ruben Olaez will just concentrate on his boxing career. Jose Figueroa, Linnea Lopez, Eric Marquez and Tuukut Silvas are looking toward law enforcement careers while Nova Mendoza, Clover Swan and Mikki Valenzuela want to go into the medical field. Violet Chacon aspires to be a chef and Louis Cervantes wants to work at Soboba in some capacity. Ignacio Alcala wants to be part of the company that makes Takis tortilla chips and Angelo Martinez would like to be “a factory worker who makes chocolate milk.” Nehsoon Salas wants to be “a nail person” and Menyil Tohee is eyeing a career as a mail person.

The annual Soboba Fiesta treated guests to a full day of cultural experiences and fun and games when it was held at the Soboba Sports Complex on Saturday, May 18. Through a collaborative effort between several departments and includes the Soboba Foundation and Tribal Administration, the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians also welcomed singers and cultural presenters to interact with those who attended the Tribal community event through their social songs and dances.

At left, Tashina Miranda Ornelas, Culture Department Coordinator/Instructor at Noli Indian School, works with fellow basket weavers at the Soboba Fiesta.

Several food vendors were set up behind the shady ramadas that were built to encircle the grassy area where bird singers and dancers were well-received throughout the day. Michael Mirelez, who led the Desert Cahuilla Bird Singers from Torres Martinez, has been teaching a class through Soboba TANF and Cultural Resources for almost eight years. Each Tuesday, from 6 to 8 p.m., he conducts Cahuilla Language Through Bird Songs that is open to all Tribal communities by RSVP to 951-663-6261. Some of his students who were present at the Fiesta joined in.

Another highlight was a performance by the Apache Crown Dancers from White River, Arizona.

Co-ed sports were front and center with horseshoe and one-pitch softball tournaments starting at 11 a.m. There were 20 players in the double-elimination horseshoe tournament; the winners were Kathy Pico and Shad Wulf.

For the one-pitch softball tournament, the Beernuts took home first place among the field of 12 teams. The Soboba-based team roster was Andy Silvas, Noel Alverez, Noel Alverez Jr., Brave Alvarez, Davi Bentiste, Jocie Bentist, Fabian Correra, Tot Briones, Ciara Ramos, Jeremiah Ramos, Crystal Devore and Ane Pahulu.

Beernuts’ team member Andy Silvas slugs it out during the one-pitch softball tournament where 16 teams competed on two fields at the Soboba Sports Complex.

Games and contests were also popular activities. The tortilla contest was won by Kat Duro. Alice Helms, 92, was one of six entrants in the salsa contest which she has entered for many years, having won first place in the past. This year the top honors went to Ruby Arrietta.

“I use all fresh ingredients and roast everything with garlic,” Helms said.

Soboba’s Louis Cervantes makes his choice for his favorite salsa as did his son, daughter, wife and cousins.

All contestants had to submit a quart of salsa. A small amount was placed in bowls for tasting by guests who then cast a vote for their favorite. The rest of the salsa was available at the free lunch that was served inside the gymnasium. Meal contributors were Wayne Nelson who slowly smoked the shredded beef and turkey overnight before barbecuing it, Yolanda Rhodes who provided the homemade tortillas, and Anita Morillo and Jacob Rivera who made the sides that included salads, beans and rice. Also provided was homemade wewish, an acorn mush that was one of the main food staples of the Indigenous peoples of California. After the hearty meal, there were plenty of sweets supplied by guests at the potluck dessert table.

The Soboba Elders sponsored Bingo games from 10:30 to noon, which was a popular activity. Grease pole climbing, a watermelon eating contest and some tug-of-war sessions kept everyone’s interest. Peon games began at dusk and lasted well into the night. The pool and playground were also open and children enjoyed both throughout the event that occurred during a day of sunny and warm temperatures.

Soboba Tribal Preschool students earned much-deserved applause and smiles from the crowd as they performed three songs they have learned. One about colors was in the Luiseño language.

Sitting under one of the ramadas constructed with help from Noli Indian School students and enjoying a nice breeze, Alice Helms said that back in her grandmother’s day they didn’t have tents and canopies to provide shade so ramadas were a necessity. Today they serve as a reminder of the cultural traditions that Tribal members know are important to continue for future generations.

The second annual Bingo Night Fundraiser to raise money for Soboba Tribal Preschool students to attend a year-end celebration at Legoland was an astounding success. The sold-out event attracted 400 game players to the Soboba Sports Complex on March 21 to play four games of Bingo, each with cash prizes.

After a welcome and heartfelt gratitude from Tribal Executive Officer Steven Estrada, who acknowledged all team members who volunteered their time, the first number was called by Sponsorship Coordinator Andrew Vallejos, who was being assisted by Loovi Herrera on stage.

Loovi Herrera helps Bingo numbers caller Andrew Vallejos during the course of the two-hour Bingo Night Fundraiser at the Soboba Sports Complex. | Photos courtesy of the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians

The first game ended in a tie and Paul Johnson and Dione Kitchen had to take part in a tiebreaker contest facilitated by Corryn Salgado-Flores. She said it is a trending Tik Tok challenge to see who can get a three-foot-long Fruit Roll-up into their mouth the fastest without using their hands.

Johnson, who emerged victorious, donated half of his $250 winnings back to the preschool while the crowd applauded his generosity.

The second game ended in a three-way tie and the tiebreaker this time had contestants placing an Oreo cookie onto their forehead and without using their hands, working it down into their mouth. After several attempts, and many replacement cookies being handed out, Janis Ayal from Pechanga was the winner.

Janis Ayal from Pechanga is the successful winner of $250 after a tiebreaker contest between three winners of the second Bingo game.

Gordon Placencia was the only winner in game 3 and the final Blackout Bingo game resulted in two players participating in two tiebreakers since the cash prize was $500. It was Chanel Zelaya versus preschool student Ignacio “Iggy” Alcala. After Chanel won the Fruit Roll-up challenge, they were both given a chance at an axe throwing contest, using plastic axes. Although they both got one axe on the target, Chanel was given the overall win after combining both contests.

Adding to the anticipation of the night were 80 outstanding raffle prizes, most of them in cellophane-wrapped baskets. Those who purchased raffle tickets deposited them into the boxes in front of the gifts they most wanted. There was also a 50/50 drawing that gave one lucky ticket holder $1,089.50 to take home.

But the biggest win of the night was seeing the community support for the preschool. Vallejos reached out to all the departments and requested volunteers and was pleased with the positive response.

“All these people came together because they wanted to see these children go to their year-end event,” Vallejos said. “I am so proud of these people and the team. This is why I work for Soboba. Unlike any other Tribe, this Tribal government is like a community, and you can count on them.”

From those who work at the preschool to Tribal and non-Tribal community members, each and every one of those who volunteered their time stepped up in a big way.

“It was a huge collaborative effort with a huge goal, and we made it,” Vallejos said. “I would like to thank Andy Silvas and the Parks and Rec team, Human Resources, the Soboba Casino Resort marketing team, Noli students, Soboba Youth Council, parents and grandparents and actually the entire valley for their assistance and support.”

Members of the Soboba Youth Council and students from Noli Indian School at the Soboba Reservation volunteer to serve pasta dinners to 400 guests.

He was also thankful to Estrada and his assistant Karla Valdez, Christian Aceves from the Soboba Tribal Environmental Department, Soboba Casino Resort team members, and Soboba Foundation President Dondi Silvas who said she was happy to volunteer her time to the event since she is a “Glamma” who has her granddaughter attending the preschool. “It was just so nice to see such a great turnout,” she said.

Vallejos also thanked the IT department as well as members of Soboba Tribal Council and Noli Indian School students who pitched in. Vice Chairwoman Geneva Mojado enlisted the aid of her two children to help where needed while she assisted with selling 50/50 and raffle tickets.

Among the many volunteers helping to make the night successful are, from left, Geneva Mojado, Christian Aceves and Karla Valdez, who stayed busy selling tickets for raffle prizes and a 50/50 drawing.

“Holy Smokes! What a great event!” Mojado said. “It’s great seeing the entire community here and not only those from Soboba. It’s heartwarming to see this kind of support for our youngest Tribal members.”

Guests were treated to a delicious Italian dinner courtesy of Chef Anita Morillo and her team, which included Lead Cook Jacob Rivera. It rivaled any fine dining restaurant with three choices of pasta entrees. Added to that were fresh vegetables, a salad and breadsticks. A corner was set aside for parents of preschoolers to host a sweet treats and bake sale, bringing in additional funds.

Carrie Garcia’s son Cygnus is a preschooler and her daughter, Clover, is in kindergarten this year. She was pleased with the turnout and is looking forward to going with her children to Legoland.

“I like to see this type of community support, and getting everything ready for this event it was nice to see the community’s involvement,” she said. “For me, having my children attend Soboba’s preschool is a generational thing. I went there when I was their age, and it means a lot to me to have them be students there.”

The second annual Soboba Tribal Preschool Bingo Night Fundraiser attracts 400 players to the Soboba Sports Complex, March 21.

Vallejos said he was overwhelmed by the generosity of those that donated raffle prizes. From Chamber of Commerce members to Tribal Administration office employees and the Silvas and Placencia families, the donations added to the excitement of the night as guests decided where to best deposit their tickets.

Hemet Mayor Joe S. Males, who attended with his wife, daughter, son and a dear friend, said his wife was happy to win one of the raffle prizes she wanted. He said they all love playing Bingo and he couldn’t think of anything better than to spend time with his family and also support Soboba.

“We had a great time and were amused by all the great ideas for winning tiebreakers; we couldn’t stop laughing and we enjoyed all those who were helping and directing the evening,” Males said. “My overall impression of the event was that it was spectacular. The coordination of all the volunteers was right on and they were all volunteering with a smile. I believe that I had more fun at this Bingo Fundraiser than any other Bingo game I’ve attended.”

Beaded good luck bracelets and keychains made by preschoolers are sold for $2 each during the Bingo Night Fundraiser, March 21.

Vallejos said the coordination of the event was handled like any event for Soboba where they ask people from different departments to participate and get approval from their managers, who sometimes get involved themselves.

“Soboba is known for its community involvement,” Vallejos said. “Here at Soboba, the team is involved in the community, and if you’re invested into this community, you’ll be a lifelong employee of the Tribe.”

Soboba Tribal Elder Rosemary Morillo was impressed with the diversity of support shown at the event. “I love when our community and surrounding communities support our schools and I love that our preschoolers are benefitting from this event,” she said.

Hemet residents and friends for 25-plus years Rita Neisler and Dora Ramirez had been at a line-dancing event before heading to Soboba’s Bingo Night Fundraiser. They like playing Bingo and were happy that their fun night out was also supporting a good cause.

Longtime friends Rita Neisler and Dora Ramirez of Hemet enjoy playing Bingo and supporting the preschool’s fundraiser.

“At the end of the night when the guests had left, all the volunteers who were cleaning up were tired but so happy. They were proud of themselves, and deservedly so,” Vallejos said.

Noli Indian School students began preparing for their homecoming football game on Thursday, Oct. 19 by spending the whole week building floats. The tradition of having each class represented by a float that is towed from the Soboba Sports Complex to The Oaks on game night brought out some creatively decorated displays.

This year’s theme was “Board Games” and each class chose one to highlight with help from teachers and staff in the building process. New this year was a float representing the Noli Booster Club where parents and staff came together on the campus courtyard to decorate their entry that featured the game of checkers. Black and red are also Noli’s school colors so it was very apropos.

Noli employee and Booster Club member Tanya Briones-Rivera, left, with daughters Sophomore Duchess Shawna Rivera and Senior Queen Luisa Rivera, and husband Luis Manuel Rivera.

Students took turns working on their floats during free periods, nutrition and lunch breaks and some even stayed after school to make sure they met the deadline of 5 p.m. on game day. An added incentive was the fact that a class party would be awarded to the top float, courtesy of the school’s staff members.

The sixth graders of the Class of 2030 chose Scrabble as their board game and created oversized squares with words that meant something to the students. Seventh grade combined the time of year with their game choice of “Operation” as a scary ghoul and lots of red paint depicted a bloody scene. The float created by eighth grade students was chess.

Scrabble pieces are painted in the days leading up to the Homecoming float parade on Oct. 19.

Freshmen selected Monopoly, or rather “Soboba-opoly,” for their game design and with the help of science teacher Jay Dagostino built oversized hotels and houses as well as the familiar Community Chest. There was even a mini jail constructed above the oversized “Go to Jail” spot that was recreated for the float. Jumanji was the chosen theme for sophomores who carried the jungle theme to the truck bed of the vehicle that was towing the float.

Juniors took on The Class of 2025, The Game of Life for their design with each car game piece cutout named for the students. With help from math teacher Kekai Bryant-Williams, Spanish teacher Andrea Duran and AVID tutor Alena Duenas, the group got very creative with their twist on the game. Duenas is also a 2022 graduate of Noli Indian School and helped the students think about careers and other future goals to add to the game spots that wrapped around the entire trailer.

The Class of 2024 created a colorful rendition of Candyland, renamed Seniorland, which was very fitting as candy is thrown out to spectators along the parade route as the floats make their way up Castile Canyon Road to The Oaks football stadium. Students from each class ride on the trailer that their float was built upon and get applauded and cheered on by all the residents who watch them ride by.

Camille Diaz was this year’s Grand Marshal. She has worked as Noli’s school nurse for about eight years and said she was “very honored to have been chosen” and said her role was going to be easy: wave and pass out candy from her seat in the back of her son’s pickup truck.

The top three floats were named at the football game’s halftime event. First place was awarded to 11th grade for Life, second place was 10th grade for Jumanji and third place was 6th grade for Scrabble.

Another highlight of the halftime break was the introduction of the Homecoming Court and naming of the Senior King and Queen which were Anthony Salgado and Luisa Rivera. Other royals who took the field to be applauded were Freshman Sweetheart Girl Nevaeh Ochoa and Freshman Sweetheart Boy Kevin
Vene
gas, who was also the starting quarterback of the game. Also honored were Sophomore Duchess Shawna Rivera and Sophomore Duke Ronald Morillo and Junior Princess Arionna Ward and Junior Prince Daigan Cyhan. Senior Queen nominees were Jasmine Lemas and Nataly Lemas and Matthew Torres was a Senior King nominee. All members of the court campaigned for votes during Homecoming Float Week.
