Celebrating the 100th day of school, St. Hyacinth students dress like 100 year-olds

On Wednesday, February 5, 2020, students and staff at St. Hyacinth Academy, located at 275 S. Victoria Ave., in San Jacinto, celebrated their one-hundredth day of school by dressing up as one-hundred-year-olds.

“One of my favorite things about teaching here at St. Hyacinth is seeing the growth in them; from day 1 to day 100 . . . It just brings me a lot of joy to see how they grow spiritually, academically, and socially,” says Maria Aguilera, preschool teacher of 15 years.

And grow they did.

The playground was awash with miniature versions of golden-aged seniors: students who appeared to have rapidly aged; weathered, wizened and graying – some sported walkers and whiskers, others, generational spectacles and pink plastic curlers, while a well-seasoned mini-actor walked in a hunch, maneuvering his cane and making “old man” noises.

The “one-hundred-year-olds” of St. Hyacinth Academy ranged from preschool to 8th grade. Wednesday’s event was one example of the school’s spirit in promoting fun along with recognition of student growth, while also showing the community all they have to offer.

St. Hyacinth Academy has been part of the San Jacinto Valley for almost 75 years and offers a traditional Catholic education for children from preschool to 8th grade, though Catholic faith is not a requirement for attendance, and all are welcome regardless of religious or non-religious background.

Hyacinth Academy strives to cultivate leadership, and achievement, and provides a well-rounded educational experience for students. The school provides before and after school care in their extended service program, as well as music, sports, decathlon, tutoring and ballet folkloric Mexican dance group.

“I would like the community to see the wonderful things we have to offer,” says Aguilera, adding, “ I hope that when students graduate from here they have a better understanding of their faith, and go on to become wonderful citizens of the world.”
