La Sierra University’s long-running annual Candlelight Concert and signature music department fundraiser have moved into virtual mode, offering holiday cheer during a season hampered by the ongoing pandemic.

La Sierra’s Department of Music on Friday, Dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 12 at 4 p.m. will stream the pre-recorded 73rd Annual Candlelight Concert on the ‘Facebook Live’ platform. And on Sunday, Dec. 20 at 6:30 p.m. the department will hold a two-hour Christmas Gala on its YouTube channel toward raising funds for student scholarships and resources.

Both events are free admission. Registration for the gala is required. The university’s time-honored Candlelight Concert, a cherished holiday tradition, will take place over 75 minutes on Facebook and feature the university’s chorale, orchestra and UNITED vocal ensemble as well as soloists performing a range of works such as “Candlelight Carol” by John Rutter and an arrangement of “Silent Night” by La Verne-based composer and arranger Shawn Kirshner.

The repertoire will also include a newly written arrangement of the German Carol “In dulci jubilo” by Matthew Culloton, and “La March de Rois,” an organ piece performed by Dr. Kimo Smith, director of keyboard and collaborative studies. The online performance will also incorporate a favorite of in-person Candlelight Concerts, the Christmas carol sing-along. “It will include a chance to sing at the top your lungs and from the safety of your home with the La Sierra choirs, orchestra and organ [playing] “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Hark the Herald Angels Sing,” two of the most beloved carols of the season,” said Director of Choral Studies Dr. Ariel Quintana.

Woodwind and brass players of the La Sierra University Orchestra under Dr. Dean Anderson rehearse for upcoming virtual holiday performances.

La Sierra’s music groups have been preparing for the recorded performances since the beginning of fall quarter. Smaller string ensembles have been allowed to rehearse under health and safety protocol and in a physically-distanced manner on campus. Woodwind, brass and percussion musicians engaged in virtual rehearsals. Recordings for all choral pieces were done from the students’ homes or in their dorm rooms.

In almost all cases vocal students used their smartphones to make their recordings. The music department this year received financial assistance for mics, lighting, cameras, computers, and video and audio editing software in order to produce recorded performances for the concert season, said department chair and Director of Orchestral Studies Dean Anderson earlier this fall. “We believe that the online platform is here to stay and we are adjusting our program offerings to embrace this new era of performances and education,” he said.

The La Sierra University Music Facebook page for Candlelight Concert attendance will be available at https://www.facebook.com/lasierrauniversitymusic For free registration and information about the Christmas Gala 2020 please visit www.lasierra.edu/music/christmas-gala, or text MusicGala2020 to 41444.
(Virtual Concert)

We may not be able to attend a concert in a large or quaint venue right now, but thanks to the Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) Foundation, we can still rock out at a virtual concert.

Thompson Square, the Grammy-nominated country music duo who headlined the Menifee Music & Arts Festival in 2019, will entertain MSJC students, family and friends, and members of the public for an hour at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 22. The multi-platinum-selling husband and wife have earned “Vocal Duo of the Year” honors from both the Academy of Country Music (ACM) and Country Music Association (CMA) awards.

The public is welcome to join the exclusive and very entertaining Zoom portion of the virtual concert for $20, which will benefit the MSJC Foundation’s Pledge for Success. The Zoom portion provides an up close and personal experience with Thompson Square that fans rarely have access to in which they can interact with the band, request songs and hear the band share some unique stories. Tickets are limited and are first-come, first-serve, so plan to buy early by visiting the MSJC website.

The Pledge for Success, a basic-needs initiative, supports MSJC students with emergency funding and food, books and supplies, professional clothing, and essential hygienic kits throughout the year. Learn more about the Pledge for Success at www.msjc.edu/pledgeforsuccess.

The concert would not be possible without generous MSJC Foundation sponsors Pepsi; CW Driver; Keenan; Image Source; Dominion Trust; So Cal Gas; and California Coast Credit Union.

Mt. San Jacinto College serves about 27,000 students – about two-thirds of which are on financial aid – over a 1,700-square-mile area.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone in one way or another – and, in some cases, many ways.

Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) has continued providing students instruction but had to cancel all of its face-to-face events.

However, the MSJC Foundation has good news for MSJC students, faculty and staff. We may not be able to attend a concert in a large or quaint venue right now, but thanks to very generous sponsors, we can still enjoy some stellar performances in our new virtual concert series featuring five great acts from various musical genres.

The free hourlong concerts would not be possible without MSJC Foundation sponsors Pepsi; CW Driver; Keenan; Image Source; Dominion Trust; So Cal Gas; and California Coast Credit Union.

The MSJC (Stay-At-Home) Concert Series launches today, May 29, with Jimmie Allen, a breakthrough country music artist slated to play the Stagecoach Country Music Festival in Indio in October.

Up-and-coming country music artist Matt Stell, a former college basketball player best known for “Prayed for You,” will perform Wednesday, June 10.

Platinum-selling Parmalee, a 2016 Academy of Country Music (ACM) “New Vocal Duo/Group of the Year” nominee, jams on Wednesday, June 24. The band was slated to play the Menifee Music & Arts Festival on the MSJC Menifee Valley Campus this year until its cancelation.

Eve 6, which scored several hits in the ‘90s such as “Inside Out,” takes the “stage” Wednesday, July 8.

Thompson Square, the Grammy-nominated country music duo who headlined the Menifee Music & Arts Festival in 2019, will entertain us again on Wednesday, July 22. The multi-platinum-selling husband and wife have earned “Vocal Duo of the Year” honors from both the ACM and Country Music Association (CMA) awards.

The MSJC (Stay-At-Home) Concert Series benefits the MSJC Foundation’s Pledge for Success, a basic-needs initiative that supports MSJC students with emergency funding and food, books and supplies, professional clothing, and essential hygienic kits throughout the year. The Pledge is needed now more than ever as we work to provide the resources our students need at this time.
Each concert will be streamed live on YouTube for MSJC students, faculty and staff.

Mt. San Jacinto College serves about 27,000 students – about two-thirds of which are on financial aid – over a 1,700-square-mile area.

On May 21, Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) awarded a record-breaking 3,554 degrees and certificates to 1,958 graduates during its virtual graduation ceremony.
