<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While most families were traveling to reach a destination away from home this Christmas season or preparing their homes with decorations, baked goods and wrapped presents, Phillip Basquez and his family spent Dec. 22 making sure lots of San Jacinto children got a new toy.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Basquez, a member of the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians, decided a couple of years ago to hold a toy giveaway event to provide for families that couldn’t afford much. Last year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, he knew many families were having a hard time and wanted to make sure children had a merry Christmas. This year, although things have improved for many, some still are struggling and Basquez and his family wanted to do what they could to help out. “I just think giving back to the community is important; I grew up here,” Basquez, 34, said. “I feel each child deserves a gift.” </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="800" height="600" src="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-2.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-42869" srcset="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-2.jpg 800w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-2-768x576.jpg 768w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-2-696x522.jpg 696w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-2-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption>More than 300 toys are given away to San Jacinto children, thanks to the generosity of Phillip Basquez and his family. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">He set up a pop-up area near Regal Cinemas movie theater in San Jacinto three days before Christmas and posted the event on Instagram and Facebook, inviting the community to come with their children. Those who saw the post shared with others and there was a long line already in place when the giveaway officially began at noon. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With the help of his brothers, friends, children, including his son Delos and daughter Lokelani and his mother, Johnna Valdez, Basquez gave away 300-plus toys. Everyone adhered to safety protocols as only one family at a time was allowed to view all the toys displayed on multiple tables. Each child in the family could choose the toy they wanted. There were dolls, trucks, stuffed animals and so much more. It was like shopping in a toy store, only the gifts were free to the kids. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img decoding="async" width="800" height="600" src="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-3.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-42870" srcset="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-3.jpg 800w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-3-300x225.jpg 300w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-3-768x576.jpg 768w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-3-696x522.jpg 696w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-3-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption>Soboba tribal member Phillip Basquez holds his annual toy giveaway in San Jacinto on Dec. 22. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The first year, I bought all the toys and last year we bought the majority of them but friends that liked what we were doing donated toys, too,” Basquez said. This year, Valdez was able to be included on the recipient list of the Soboba Gives Back! Toy Drive, which provided 150 gifts. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Basquez said people driving by stopped because they thought the toys were being sold but when they found out what he was doing, they offered to donate money. “We thanked them for the offer but told them it wasn’t necessary,” he said. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img decoding="async" width="800" height="600" src="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-4.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-42871" srcset="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-4.jpg 800w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-4-300x225.jpg 300w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-4-768x576.jpg 768w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-4-696x522.jpg 696w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-4-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption>Excited children line up for the opportunity to choose a new toy in San Jacinto on Dec. 22. Photos courtesy of the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He said the feedback from grateful families was heartwarming as they received many comments such as “thank you,” “God bless you,” “we don’t see this often,” “this is wonderful” and “we appreciate this.” </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Valdez, who is on the board of directors for the California Indian Manpower Consortium Inc., was happy that the nonprofit donated reusable water bottles and hot cocoa bombs they could distribute to each family as well. “My son started doing this because he wanted to give toys to the kids in this town and he wanted his own kids to learn about helping those less fortunate,” she said. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="600" src="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-5.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-42872" srcset="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-5.jpg 800w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-5-300x225.jpg 300w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-5-768x576.jpg 768w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-5-696x522.jpg 696w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/toys-5-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption>This little boy finds the biggest toy he can but continues to eye other possibilities during Phillip Basquez’ annual toy giveaway event in San Jacinto. Photos courtesy of the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Basquez was happy that this year’s event was bigger and better than last year, and he was pleased that so many children were able to receive a toy. “We look forward to next year,” he said. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Basquez helps with other groups that do toy drives throughout the year since needy children enjoy gifts at any time, not just for Christmas. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With its official unveiling during Thanksgiving week, <a href="https://www.soboba.com/">Soboba Casino Resort</a> began sharing a special holiday treat with visitors. Along its unique Gingerbread Lane, guests are greeted at every turn with oversized cookie cutouts that boast fun facts about the centerpiece of the display: a 22-foot tall gingerbread house.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It took about five weeks from conversation to completion to get the house ready. SCR’s facilities department started building the internal framework in mid-October after the idea was presented by CEO John James. Chief Marketing Officer Marty Moore spearheaded the whimsical design.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Four pastry chefs, including Jean Marie Verhoeven, used 832 pounds of gingerbread dough and 600 pounds of frosting to cover the 400 square foot house. Verhoeven said the team added items as they went along to make it look even sweeter such as candy kisses, chocolate chip cookies and candy canes. Other edible accents include windows made of tinted sugar “glass” and sills made of Belgian chocolate.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He said the gingerbread was baked on sheet pans that measured 18-in. by 24-in. and it took 150 sheet pans of cookie dough to cover the roof and another 100 to cover each side.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We used the same batter for all of it but added green or red dye for certain parts of the house,” Verhoeven said. “The tricky part was to be sure to cook the colored parts at a lower temperature.”</p>

<figure class="wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex"><ul class="blocks-gallery-grid"><li class="blocks-gallery-item"><figure><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="600" src="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s2.jpg" alt="" data-id="32781" data-full-url="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s2.jpg" data-link="https://hsjchronicle.com/?attachment_id=32781" class="wp-image-32781" srcset="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s2.jpg 800w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s2-300x225.jpg 300w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s2-768x576.jpg 768w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s2-696x522.jpg 696w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s2-560x420.jpg 560w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s2-80x60.jpg 80w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s2-265x198.jpg 265w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s2-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption class="blocks-gallery-item__caption">Soboba Casino Resort employee Dianna Mingoes is one of Santa’s enthusiastic helpers who takes orders for the bake shop when guests enter Gingerbread Lane.</figcaption></figure></li><li class="blocks-gallery-item"><figure><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="600" src="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s3.jpg" alt="" data-id="32782" data-full-url="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s3.jpg" data-link="https://hsjchronicle.com/?attachment_id=32782" class="wp-image-32782" srcset="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s3.jpg 800w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s3-300x225.jpg 300w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s3-768x576.jpg 768w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s3-696x522.jpg 696w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s3-560x420.jpg 560w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s3-80x60.jpg 80w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s3-265x198.jpg 265w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s3-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption class="blocks-gallery-item__caption">This sketch of a whimsical gingerbread house is what started the project of building a life-size house with more than 832 pounds of gingerbread dough and 600 pounds of frosting.</figcaption></figure></li></ul></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He said the variance in colors throughout the gingerbread planks, blocks and roof shingles was intentional as they under- and over-baked some sheets and then randomly placed the confection on the house to give it a more realistic look.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“I have done gingerbread before, obviously, but I’ve done nothing so big before,” Verhoeven said. Originally from Belgium, he has been a pastry chef since 1970 and has lived in the United States for about 40 years.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Verhoeven found the project to be extremely interesting and enjoyed working with fellow pastry chefs in between their regular duties for the Soboba Casino Resort’s eateries.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“I appreciated the opportunity to do this and the trust of Robert (Mejia), who gave us the freedom to be creative and did not give us a lot of restrictions,” Verhoeven said. “It turned out amazing.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Mejia, who is the Director of Food and Beverage, said he was excited to see the house take shape during the construction process.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“It looks fantastic. I’m glad we did it the way that we did it,” Mejia said. “It’s given us motivation to keep going and create a new pastry menu for the main dining room.”</p>

<figure class="wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex"><ul class="blocks-gallery-grid"><li class="blocks-gallery-item"><figure><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="600" src="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s4.jpg" alt="" data-id="32783" data-full-url="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s4.jpg" data-link="https://hsjchronicle.com/?attachment_id=32783" class="wp-image-32783" srcset="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s4.jpg 800w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s4-300x225.jpg 300w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s4-768x576.jpg 768w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s4-696x522.jpg 696w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s4-560x420.jpg 560w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s4-80x60.jpg 80w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s4-265x198.jpg 265w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s4-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption class="blocks-gallery-item__caption">The completed 400 square foot gingerbread house is on display at Soboba Casino Resort through Jan. 3.</figcaption></figure></li><li class="blocks-gallery-item"><figure><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="600" src="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s5.jpg" alt="" data-id="32784" data-full-url="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s5.jpg" data-link="https://hsjchronicle.com/?attachment_id=32784" class="wp-image-32784" srcset="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s5.jpg 800w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s5-300x225.jpg 300w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s5-768x576.jpg 768w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s5-696x522.jpg 696w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s5-560x420.jpg 560w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s5-80x60.jpg 80w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s5-265x198.jpg 265w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/s5-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption class="blocks-gallery-item__caption">One of many colorful video screens displayed throughout Gingerbread Lane at Soboba Casino Resort for the holiday season.</figcaption></figure></li></ul></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Until that time, guests can purchase prepackaged and individually wrapped goodies to go from the Bake Shop on Gingerbread Lane. The display is open 24/7 with Bake Shop hours of 3 to 10 p.m. Fridays and 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Jan. 4. Christmas carolers will take the stage Fridays through Sundays from 5 to 8 p.m. There is no seating near the stage but there is plenty of space for guests to stand, while observing social distancing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Temperature checks are done at all casino entrances and masks are required for everyone entering the casino. Currently no bandanas, neck gaiters or vented masks are permitted – only <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/">CDC</a>-approved masks. Social distancing is made easier by using guided pathways throughout Gingerbread Lane that maintains one way in and one way out.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The display is in the casino’s Cabaret Lounge area that was revamped with holiday music and colorful videos and is accessed by walking through a giant lighted Christmas ornament. There are many festive touches throughout the space to encourage selfies as well as a photographer providing a professional photo keepsake in front of the gingerbread house, courtesy of Soboba Casino Resort.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Children will be allowed into the area during the hours of 7 a.m. and 9:59 p.m. when accompanied by an adult who is at least 21 years old. Extensive decorating inside and outside the Soboba Casino Resort is designed to put guests in a merry mood as they continue to enjoy all that the destination resort has to offer throughout the holiday season.</p>
