Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) has contracted with Redlands visionary Garner Holt Education Through Imagination (GHETI) to build an Animatronic Makerspace at the college’s San Jacinto Campus.

The GHETI AniMakerspace — in conjunction with MSJC design and engineering classes — will give students the ability to learn the practices and skills needed to become great problem-solvers, designers, builders and technical operators. The $832,472 AniMakerspace will take over two classrooms in the 100 Building on the campus and could open as soon as January 2022. It will also be adjacent to the campus’ new STEM building that is scheduled to debut in 2023.

The MSJC Board of Trustees unanimously approved a contract with GHETI at its Sept. 9 meeting. A video shown during the meeting explained how animatronics inspires and teaches Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) learning.

“Animatronics bring stories to life through mechanical innovation, immersive experiences and technical wizardry,” the video’s narrator said. “These highly sophisticated characters require feats of conceptual digital design, creative engineering, manufacturing, programming, and visual performing arts.”

Dr. Roger Schultz, MSJC Superintendent/President, said the AniMakerspace’s potential is endless.

Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) has contracted with Redlands visionary Garner Holt Education to build an exciting Animatronic Makerspace at the college’s San Jacinto Campus. CREDIT: Courtesy of Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC)

“We’re thrilled with this innovative and inspiring project,” Schultz said. “Animatronics has applications in such a wide range of fields. This will poise our students well for many career opportunities. The innovation the AniMakerspace will lead to will be a spark for the San Jacinto Campus and our whole district.”

MSJC Provost Joyce Johnson, who leads Career Education at the college, has helped guide the AniMakerspace project.

“We’re excited for this amazing opportunity,” Johnson said. “This will be a game-changer for our students and community. We can’t wait to unveil it to everyone in 2022.”

Animatronics date back to the early 1960s with the famed Imagineers at Disneyland. Garner Holt Productions has made nearly 500 animatronics for Disney, including the dragon in the Fantasmic show at Disneyland.

“It helps students earn that competitive advantage that they’ll need for the workforce of tomorrow,” said Ryan Rainbolt, the President of Garner Holt Education through Imagination.

The AniMakerspace will feature three animatronic figures, 3D printers, programming tables, two laser cutters/engravers, sewing machine, 10-needle embroider, 86-inch monitors, and more.

The AniMakerspace arrives a few years after MSJC’s Eagle MakerSpace, housed on the college’s Menifee Valley Campus. It features 3D printers and a laser cutter that students use throughout the academic year to create various projects. Like the AniMakerspace, it was funded by the California Strong Workforce Program, a state initiative aimed at developing more workforce opportunity and lifting low-wage workers into living-wage jobs through Career Education.

Two Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) honors students have earned 2021 Honors Transfer Council of California (HTCC) Exemplary Achievement Scholarships.

On March 26 and 27, five MSJC students participated in the 2021 UC Irvine Community College Honors Research Conference, where they had an opportunity to share their research from Honors classes at MSJC.

Students Christian Dave of Temecula and Haylie Wilcox of Murrieta were among a group of students from across California who were awarded the 2021 HTCC Exemplary Achievement Scholarships.

Mt.
Such scholars must be nominated by the Honors directors at their college and are expected to demonstrate in an essay how participation in Honors has affected their education by helping to overcome challenges or create opportunities for them to be recognized as campus and community leaders. In their essays, both students mentioned how being a member of the Honors Enrichment Program at MSJC gave them a stronger connection to the college, other students, and staff, and allowed them to get much more out of their college experience than they anticipated.

Mt.
“Even though online learning has been hard and often isolating, being a part of this Honors community has allowed me to continue to connect with others and support each other,” Wilcox wrote in her essay. “The people I met through the Honors Program will continue to inspire me to pursue my goals and help others along the way.” On May 27, both students will graduate from Mt. San Jacinto College. Dave will earn associate degrees in Liberal Arts-Mathematics & Science; and Liberal Arts-Social & Behavioral Sciences. Wilcox will earn an associate degree in Liberal Arts-Mathematics & Science and will earn an Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum Breadth to transfer to UC Davis to major in Biological Sciences.

The Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) Art Gallery is proud to present “Our Time,” the college’s annual student exhibition, which can now be appreciated at www.msjc.edu/artgallery.

This spring has presented our students, MSJC and the world some challenges. We are facing those challenges and tackling them head on. One of the ways in which we are doing this is by featuring our annual student exhibition online.

The Mt.
The group show celebrates the immense talent of the MSJC student artists during the 2020-2021 academic year at both the San Jacinto and Menifee Valley campuses. Participating artworks are nominated by instructors whose selection criteria are to represent the best examples and a wide range of subject matter and media. The show features the range of media that students learn at the school, including drawing, painting, two-dimensional and three-dimensional design, ceramic arts, sculpture, bronze casting, photography and digital illustration. The exhibit showcases the works of students who are developing their creativity and technical skills at the community college level. Additionally, this exhibition shows the diverse, individual outcomes of instructor and course studio assignments. Although this exhibition is typically presented in our MSJC Art Gallery on the San Jacinto Campus, this new online version will showcase the talents of our students to a potentially broader audience.

This exhibition is a highlight of the year for the campus, students, and surrounding community. Please join us in celebrating the artistic expressions of our MSJC students!

Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) has been named a “Military Friendly Spouse School” for 2021-2022 for its efforts in creating sustainable and meaningful education paths for military spouses.

In February, the college also earned the “Military Friendly” designation that measures a school’s commitment to student veteran and dependent recruitment, persistence, and success. The college earned the “silver” distinction, a high honor that only a select group of institutions achieve.

This prestigious list is created using data sources from federal agencies and proprietary survey information from participating organizations to create a comprehensive guide for military spouses looking to further their education.

Now in its 12th year, the Military Friendly Schools list has come to set the standard for higher education institutions to provide the best opportunities for veterans and their dependents.

Military students and military spouses attending MSJC benefit from an array of college-wide support services, including the MSJC Veterans Resource Centers on the Menifee Valley and San Jacinto campuses. The centers support the transition and success of MSJC military students and their spouses.

(City officials celebrate renovation)

Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) and city officials gathered on September 13, 2019, for the Temecula Transformation Celebration event to kick off the renovation of the new Temecula Valley Campus.

Temecula Mayor Mike Naggar praised the MSJC Board of Trustees, MSJC leadership, including Dr. Roger Schultz, college district superintendent/president, and city leaders, like City Manager Aaron Adams and Councilman Matt Rahn, for working on an innovative solution to bring higher education to the region.

Dr. Schultz thanked the city, the MSJC trustees and recognized the contractors: CW Driver, KPFF, and 19six, which recently won an award for renovation design.

Tom Ashley, the MSJC board member who represents Temecula and the surrounding region, said his son would be in the first class when the Temecula Valley Campus is fully renovated. He said he told his son how a transfer degree from MSJC would get him into a four-year university.

“That conversation now gets to happen with thousands of our local residents, like look what’s here. You can go here now” because of the new campus, Ashley said.

The college district used voter-approved Measure AA funds on March 16, 2018, to purchase two five-story office buildings at 41888 Motorcar Parkway in Temecula. Buying an existing facility saves taxpayer dollars and expedites the District’s ability to provide access to quality higher education much sooner than needed for new construction. Since the purchase, MSJC provided time for the seller to move out, started work on infrastructure, and sought proposals for renovation to meet the Division of State Architect requirements.
The Temecula Valley Campus welcomes students in Fall 2020.

The campus will provide 22 classrooms, six science labs, and five computer classrooms. It will also offer a Learning Resource Center, Library, Student Life, Health Center, and Veterans Center. Student Services – including enrollment, counseling, and financial aid will be included. The campus also will feature a bookstore, café, art studio, career center, transfer center, and campus safety.

Rachel Abelgas, a Murrieta resident who graduated from MSJC in May and served as a student speaker at the MSJC Commencement ceremony, made it a point to attend Friday’s event.

“The Temecula Valley Campus is a great opportunity for incoming students because it’s closer to where they live,” she said. “I wish it was here when I went to school so I wouldn’t have always had to drive to the Menifee Valley Campus. But that’s OK. I am very glad it’s here.”

Mt. San Jacinto College serves about 27,000 students in a district covering 1,700 square miles from the San Gorgonio Pass to Temecula, with campuses in San Jacinto, Menifee, Banning and Temecula.

In May 2019, Mt. San Jacinto College awarded a record-breaking 3,314 degrees and certificates to 1,707 graduates.
Have a wonderful day, and please follow MSJC on social media – Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
