<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="text-align:right">(<em>The gift of better mobility</em>)</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Gosch Auto Group, Empire Mobility of San Jacinto, “Apawsibility for veterans” organization and The Cloverlane Foundation all team up to get veteran Johnny Sandoval a new, motorized scooter </h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“I’m thrilled,” said veteran Johnny Sandoval. “I never expected this,” said Sandoval before choking up. A group of caring organizations, lead by the Gosch Auto Group teamed up and made sure that veteran Sandoval had the mobility he needed to live a full life.&nbsp;<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kory Foster, Service Director for Gosch Auto Group said, “Today’s event went very well. I was really pleased at all the people that were here, and at all the organizations that came together. And we are proud that we could be the host of this great event. We’re going to put a case with a wheelchair out on the floor, to make sure that the veterans know that there are services out there to help them. And they don’t necessarily have to come out and say, “Hey I need help: others can recognize that…and that’s what it’s all about: recognizing a need and meeting that need.”<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Mike Wofford, owner of Empire Mobility couldn’t have been happier that another veteran was cared for. “It was a wonderful event today at Gosch Ford. We certainly appreciate our new project partners here at Gosch. I know we’re going to have a great relationship with the whole Gosch Auto group: they’ve been very giving and helpful. Of course Sandy Dee did a wonderful job.”&nbsp;<br></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="800" height="600" src="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/z3.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-20545" srcset="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/z3.jpg 800w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/z3-600x450.jpg 600w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/z3-300x225.jpg 300w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/z3-768x576.jpg 768w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/z3-80x60.jpg 80w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/z3-265x198.jpg 265w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/z3-696x522.jpg 696w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/z3-560x420.jpg 560w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/z3-640x480.jpg 640w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And organizations weren’t the only ones pleased with the day’s events: those who served in the military, veterans such as William Hendrickson, Sandoval’s friend, and also a member of the Veteran Warriors Wheelchair Power Soccer Team (along with Sandoval) said, “Johnny and I have known each other for fourteen years. This was a great event. It’s a great partnership with Gosch Ford, and we appreciate everything they have done and are doing. The more we can get out in the community and let the community know what we’re doing, the better we can make things.”<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s always a powerful, positive and emotionally uplifting time whenever we can help our veterans. “What an incredible thing happened today: Gosch Ford is actually going to put a showcase here for Veterans to see that they shouldn’t be ashamed to ask for a scooter if it’s needed, just like we have at the Hospital. Not only did Gosch help us with this scooter, but they’re going to allow the Hemet Hospital to build a showcase and place it here. Amazing,” said Sandy Dee, a veteran and columnist for the HSJ Chronicle, adding, “Veterans don’t like to ask for things, so when they see this military shrine, they’ll also see the case with a scooter and they won’t be ashamed to ask about a scooter, if needed.”<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Myrna Rohr, Solera Diamond Valley Veterans and Friends said, “This is great. Sandy (Dee, HSJ Chronicle columnist-“A voice for vets”, and founder of&nbsp;<a href="http://apawsibility4veterans.org/">apawsibility4veterans.org</a>), and I are in other organizations together, among them, The Soroptimists. We wanted to do something for veterans. Our quilters create 13 to 14 quilts for veterans every year. From this, we teamed up with Sandy and Mike (Wofford, of Empire Mobility,&nbsp;<a href="http://empiremobility.com/">empiremobility.com</a>), and Gerry Chase (Cloverlane Foundation,&nbsp;<a href="http://cloverlanefoundatin.org/">cloverlanefoundatin.org</a>), and we realized we all had the same intention: that we should all come together to do the very best for these veterans: they’re homeless, and some are living in substandard conditions…and that’s unacceptable.”<br></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" width="800" height="600" src="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/z1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-20544" srcset="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/z1.jpg 800w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/z1-600x450.jpg 600w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/z1-300x225.jpg 300w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/z1-768x576.jpg 768w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/z1-80x60.jpg 80w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/z1-265x198.jpg 265w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/z1-696x522.jpg 696w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/z1-560x420.jpg 560w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/z1-640x480.jpg 640w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Veteran receives much-needed scooter from veterans groups  </h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Care came full circle on October 10 when The Cloverlane Foundation donated an electric scooter to veteran Larry Caldwell.<br></p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="alignright is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/A-young-Larry-Caldwell.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-15789" width="228" height="300" srcset="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/A-young-Larry-Caldwell.jpg 388w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/A-young-Larry-Caldwell-228x300.jpg 228w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/A-young-Larry-Caldwell-319x420.jpg 319w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/A-young-Larry-Caldwell-364x480.jpg 364w" sizes="(max-width: 228px) 100vw, 228px" /><figcaption> A young Larry Caldwell </figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When veteran Sandy Dee began her organization, “A Pawsibility 4 Veterans,” which helps vets with service dogs, Larry Caldwell was among the first to volunteer. “When we began our organization three years ago and Larry immediately volunteered to help. About six months after we began, we helped his service dog “Buster Brown” receive his first service jacket. Now I guess you could say things have come full circle because we’ve been able to help Larry with this wheelchair,” said Dee who represents her own organization and The Cloverlane Foundation.<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The scooter, the funding for which came from The Veterans Mobility Project through a grant from Veterans and Friends of Solera of Diamond Valley, was sorely needed by Caldwell, but he thought he’d have to make due with his wheelchair. “I joined Sandy’s organization so that I could get training for my two Saint Bernards. I stayed on to help, but I never expected that I’d be a recipient. When Sandy called me and said she’d found me some help, I said, “For what?” I was that shocked that she knew I needed a scooter, and had gone out and found me one.”&nbsp;<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Though Caldwell has been diagnosed with diabetes, had his right leg amputated and most recently lost his big and third toe, the VA, the very organization tasked with helping veterans, turned down Caldwell’s request for a scooter.&nbsp;<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In a decision that stunned many, the VA said Caldwell, “&#8230;was not fully incapacitated.”&nbsp;<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Through a freak accident, I had fallen getting out of my van, and I broke my hip. I had to have hip surgery, so I really needed the scooter, but they shot us down,” said Caldwell.<br></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="600" src="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Untitled-2-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-15790" srcset="https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Untitled-2-1.jpg 800w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Untitled-2-1-600x450.jpg 600w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Untitled-2-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Untitled-2-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Untitled-2-1-80x60.jpg 80w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Untitled-2-1-265x198.jpg 265w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Untitled-2-1-696x522.jpg 696w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Untitled-2-1-560x420.jpg 560w, https://hsjchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Untitled-2-1-640x480.jpg 640w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption>Larry Caldwells support dog Buster Brown</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The VA had turn down Larry’s request for a scooter even though he had been through hell. They said he was not fully disabled. This is the kind of thing our organizations see and work with on a daily basis. No one really knows how poorly a lot of our veterans are treated,” said Dee, adding, “My organization, and that of The Cloverlane Foundation have essentially the same mission, “To bring awareness to and to add value to the community and our veteran population in collaboration with other organizations.”<br></p>
