SAN JACINTO – The Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) Art Gallery, California Family Life Center (CFLC) and Worth Visual Arts are pleased to present Art, Recognition, Transition, Education, Reciprocation, Youth (a.r.t.e.r.y.) 2024 The Eclipse Project – Nature & Nurturing exhibit. This exhibition marks the eighteenth collaboration with CFLC, a.r.t.e.r.y., and Worth Visual Arts.

The mentor art project explores communication avenues in the sciences, nurturing, nature and how we as humans, are directly connected in many similar ways – both in nature and nurturing. Once again, it’s exciting to see the eclipse analogy of intergenerational mentoring, and nature’s nurturing lessons integrate through journaling and art.

With new scientific knowledge of nature, trees, forests and our human connections, we have found deeper understanding as to how and why nurturing is so important to survive together peacefully with nature and our human relationships. Science has proven that human nurturing is essential for survival with direct links to nature’s schooling, “mother trees”, growth and community. Our human commonalities run strong with nature’s lessons, providing us with a foundation for growth. Suzanne Simard brings us back to nature’s examples, “…The old and young (trees) are perceiving communicating and responding to one another by emitting chemical signals. Chemicals identical to our own neurotransmitters…The older trees are able to discern which seedlings are their own kin. The old trees nurture the young ones and provide them food and water just as we do with our own children. It is enough to make one pause, take a deep breather and contemplate the social nature of the forest and how this is critical for evolution….the old trees are mothering their children.”

With the Eclipse project, mentoring, art and journaling, we hope to offer multiple generations the opportunities to help nurture, grow, and learn these important findings from nature and each other.

-Michele Worth, Worth Visual Arts Programs, Resources: Suzanne Simard

Mentoring, art and community service are key elements to CFLCʼs a.r.t.e.r.y. Programs. CFLC and Worth Visual Arts were awarded the 2015 Americans for the Arts, National Association of Counties (NACo) and Honorable Mention from the Association of Counties Arts & Culture. The Eclipse Project exhibit emphasizes mentoring skills, focused on the transference of creative energy, and goals through art within their communities. a.r.t.e.r.y. opens opportunities to future career paths to youth mentors, while bridging all program objectives to positive endeavors within their community. By exhibiting their artwork at the MSJC Art Gallery, youth are exposed to college as a more attainable path for their future while assimilating comfortably in a college atmosphere.

Senior and mentor introspective journals will be displayed and are a crucial part of the a.r.t.e.r.y. Program. The journal entries help reveal the artists thoughts on their past and present as their lives change and grow beyond their homes and comfort zones.

The Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) Art Gallery, California Family Life Center (CFLC) and Worth Visual Arts are pleased to present a.r.t.e.r.y.ʼs 2022 “The Eclipse Project” exhibit now through May 19 at the college’s San Jacinto Campus. This exhibition marks the 17th year collaboration between MSJC, CFLC, and Worth Visual Arts.

“A Walk Through Time” encourages you to walk in another’s shoes, travel through time, and share the challenges, conflicts, joys, and accomplishments in each individual’s life. Artist journals accompany the artwork on exhibit.

This year’s exhibition will feature ceramic shoes made by CFLC youth mentors and senior citizens. The shoes have incredible stories to tell, with each shoe showing the different journey of each artist and the wear and tear that a well-lived life leaves. These collaborative works have inspired the senior citizens and a.r.t.e.r.y. students to think about their lives in new and exciting ways. When the seniors work with young people, they feel a sense of rejuvenation and are inspired to share their life stories with them. As the a.r.t.e.r.y. youth mentors have worked with the seniors, it has inspired them to think beyond their current lives and motivated them to think about how they can be of service to others. Their collaboration has brought a sense of understanding and appreciation between generations.

The Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) Art Gallery, California Family Life Center and Worth Visual Arts are pleased to present a.r.t.e.r.y.ʼs 2020-21 The Eclipse Project exhibit.

This free online exhibition at msjc.edu/artgallery launched Tuesday, Jan. 19, and marks the 14th collaboration between MSJC and California Family Life Center (CFLC).

“An eclipse takes place when one heavenly body such as a moon or planet moves into the shadow of another heavenly body,” NASA notes. With lunar and solar eclipses, we experience the passing and alignment of our heavenly bodies creating a beautiful and miraculous encounter. Likewise, seniors, children and youth come together to share their past and present stories – an ecliptic encounter revealing life’s experiences bridging generations. The Eclipse program focuses on youth mentors, seniors and children working together to create artworks, using mindful communication skills gaining mutual respect, trust, and friendship with one another.

This year’s exhibition focuses on clay self-portraits created by multiple generations: the California Family Life Centers (Elsinore, Hemet, & Rubidoux) a.r.t.e.r.y art mentors, Stratton Community Center senior citizens, and Kin Care. Traveling into the future, mentors and Kin Care’s (children) artists’ express their projected age by 30-plus years, forwarding their physical appearance and life stories through the artwork.

Sculptural methods are taught by mentors to aid with the creative vision and stories of their participants. Through collaborative mentoring, seniors and a.r.t.e.r.y mentors alike think about their lives in new ways, including seniors experiencing a sense of rejuvenation and inspiration to share their life stories with youth.

Likewise, as a.r.t.e.r.y mentors worked with seniors and children, it inspired youth mentors to think beyond their current lives, further motivating them as to how they can be of service to others. Overall, their collaborative exchange and artwork has brought a sense of understanding and appreciation between all generations.

The Eclipse Project exhibit emphasizes mentoring skills, focused on the transference of creative energy, and goals through art in the community. A.r.t.e.r.y. offers future career paths to youth, while bridging program objectives to positive endeavors within the community. By exhibiting the artwork at the MSJC Art Gallery, youth are exposed to college as a more attainable path for their future while assimilating comfortably into a college atmosphere.

The show has been made possible by the cooperative efforts of the MSJC Art Gallery, Worth Visual Arts Programs, Michele Worth, California Family Life Centers (CFLC); Planet Youth, Empower Youth, Rubidoux YOC. Participating collaborators are Stratton Community Center & KinCare.
