RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — An Oct. 29 trial date was confirmed Tuesday for a young man accused with a cohort of supplying a lethal dose of fentanyl to a 16-year-old French Valley girl.

Jeremiah David Carlton, 21, of Canyon Lake is accused in the death of the teenager, identified in court documents only as “J.G.”

Carlton is charged with second-degree murder, transportation of controlled substances for sale and possession of controlled substances for sale.

Jeremiah David Carlton at the time of his 2021 arrest. (Riverside County Sheriff’s Dept.)

During a pretrial hearing Tuesday at the Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta, Riverside County Superior Court Judge John Monterosso conferred with the prosecution and defense regarding a specific date for the next stage of proceedings, and both sides indicated they would be prepared to move forward at the end of next month.

Carlton is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Byrd Detention Center.

His co-defendant, 21-year-old Raymond Gene Tyrrell of French Valley, who was charged separately, pleaded guilty in July to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to three years in state prison. However, due to the amount of time he’d already spent in jail awaiting disposition of the case, along with other sentencing credits, Judge Stephen Gallon converted his prison term to what’s known as a “paper commitment,” enabling Tyrrell to instantly go on parole.

Raymond Gene Tyrrell following his 2021 arrest. Image: Riverside County Sheriff’s Dept.

Sgt. Rick Espinoza of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department alleged that Carlton and Tyrrell provided the drugs that led to the death of J.G. on the night of Feb. 24, 2021, at a residence in the 35000 block of Sugar Maple Street, near Leon Road.

Espinoza said deputies were called to the location to investigate two possible fentanyl poisonings and discovered the girl and a man, whose identity was not released, comatose. Both were taken to a regional trauma center, where the man was revived but the girl succumbed to the toxic ingestion.

“Detectives conducted an investigation and developed information that this was possibly a homicide,” the sergeant said, declining to elaborate on the circumstances.

Tyrrell was summoned to the sheriff’s Southwest station in Murrieta a day later and interviewed by detectives, after which he was taken into custody. Carlton was served with an arrest warrant and taken into custody at his residence.

Neither defendant had documented prior felony convictions.

Since February 2021, the District Attorney’s Office has charged over 30 people countywide in connection with fentanyl poisonings.

In November, prosecutors closed the books on the county’s first fentanyl murder case to go before a jury, culminating in the conviction of 34- year-old Vicente David Romero, who was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for the 2020 death of a Temecula woman. District Attorney Mike Hestrin said it was the first fentanyl murder conviction in the state.

According to public health statistics, there were 550 known fentanyl- related fatalities countywide in 2023, a 9% increase from 2022, when there were 503.

Fentanyl is manufactured in overseas labs, principally in China, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, which says the synthetic opioid is smuggled across the U.S.-Mexico border by cartels.

Fentanyl is 80-100 times more potent than morphine and can be mixed into any number of street narcotics and prescription drugs, without a user knowing what he or she is consuming. Ingestion of only two milligrams can be fatal.

Fentanyl is the leading cause of death for Americans between 18 and 45 years old.

Reporting Deputy: Sergeant Sean Liebrand

File # JV232050092

Details:

On July 24, 2023, at 2:21 p.m., personnel from the Riverside Sheriff’s Jurupa Valley Station were dispatched to the 6400 block of Etiwanda Avenue in unincorporated Jurupa Valley regarding an unresponsive juvenile. Deputies and paramedics performed lifesaving measures but the teenager was pronounced deceased at the scene. The case was immediately assumed by the Riverside Sheriff’s Office’s Overdose Death Investigations and Narcotics Unit (ODIN). The Sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau determined the teen died as a result of fentanyl poisoning. Investigators worked to identify the suspect responsible for selling the fentanyl that killed the teenager. As a result of their efforts, the suspect was identified as Sammy Estrada, an 18-year-old resident of Riverside.

On October 11, 2023, personnel from the Riverside Sheriff’s Office’s Southwest Corridor Task Force attempted to detain Estrada near the 9500 block of Miller Street in the city of Riverside. As they approached his vehicle, Estrada fled the area at a high rate of speed and was not located. Shortly after Estrada fled the area, personnel from ODIN and the Gang Task Force served a search warrant at Estrada’s residence in the 9700 block of Indiana Avenue in the city of Riverside. During the search warrant, evidence indicative of narcotic sales, which included suspected counterfeit pills containing fentanyl, was located in Estrada’s bedroom.

On October 26, 2023, personnel from the Major Crimes Unit (MCU) located Estrada in the city of Murrieta near the 40300 block of California Oaks Road. MCU attempted to detain Estrada and he fled the area again. Estrada was eventually taken into custody near the intersection of Murrieta Hot Springs Road and Whitewood Road in the city Murrieta. During the search of Estrada’s vehicle, evidence indicative of narcotic sales, which included suspected counterfeit pills containing fentanyl, was located. Estrada was later booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center for the murder of the teen. On October 30, 2023, the investigation was presented to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office and charges were filed against Estrada for murder.

This investigation is ongoing, and anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Investigator Hollingsworth at 951-955-1700. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind citizens of the dangers of illicit narcotics, many of which may contain fentanyl. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 100 times stronger than morphine and can cause death or serious bodily harm.

On January 14, 2023, at 9:21 p.m., personnel from the Riverside Sheriff’s Cabazon Station were dispatched to a call of a missing juvenile in the 12400 block of Dailey Road in Banning. The reporting party stated her missing juvenile was possibly at the location. Upon arrival, deputies located a deceased female in the backseat of a vehicle. During the investigation, the female was identified as Faith Alaniz, the missing 15-year-old female. Investigator Hood from the Cabazon Sheriff’s Station assumed the investigation. The Coroner’s Bureau ultimately determined Alaniz died as a result of fentanyl poisoning, and the case was immediately assumed by the Riverside Sheriff’s Office Overdose Death Investigations and Narcotics Unit (ODIN). Over the next several months, the investigation was relentlessly worked, and a suspect, James Dailey, a 51-year-old resident of Banning, was identified as the suspect responsible for Alaniz’s death. A Ramey warrant for murder was issued for Dailey.

On June 4, 2023, personnel from the Banning Police Department located Dailey, and he was taken into custody without incident. Dailey was later booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility for murder. On June 22, 2023, the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office filed murder, felony child endangerment, and an enhancement for causing death to a juvenile.
