On Sunday, July 30, 2023, at 1:44 p.m., a smash-n-grab robbery occurred at a local jewelry store in the 1600 block of Perris Boulevard in the city of Perris. Seven masked suspects entered the location, pepper-sprayed the security guard, and broke the glass on several display cases, stealing $100,000 in jewelry.

The Perris Sheriff’s Station Robbery Burglary Suppression Team (RBST) assumed the investigation and discovered that over a month and a half, there had been numerous smash-n-grab robberies at these jewelry stores throughout Southern California.

On Tuesday, August 22, 2023, officers from the Corona Police Department responded to a smash-n-grab robbery in the city of Corona, where they located the suspect vehicle. After a brief pursuit, the Corona Police Department arrested two suspects. Perris Sheriff’s Station RBST collaborated with the Corona Police Department and obtained information linking one of their suspects, Joshua Lewis, a 24-year-old resident of Inglewood, to the Perris robbery. Perris Sheriff’s Station RBST also learned the same suspects committed another smash-n-grab robbery in the city of Thousand Oaks. Perris Sheriff’s Station RBST obtained a warrant for Lewis; however, Lewis had already posted bail and was released from custody, and Perris Sheriff’s Station RBST could not locate him.

(Feds: Man sold rapper Mac Miller)

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles man was arrested Wednesday on charges that he sold counterfeit opioid pills to Mac Miller two days before the rapper died of an overdose.

Cameron James Pettit, 28, who lives in the Hollywood Hills, is expected to appear in court later Wednesday, federal prosecutors said in a statement.

The 26-year-old Miller, who was known to many as Ariana Grande’s ex-boyfriend but was a respected rapper in his own right, was found dead by his assistant at his San Fernando Valley home on Sept. 7, 2018.

A Drug Enforcement Agency affidavit alleges that Miller asked Pettit for oxycodone and other drugs, but on Sept. 5, 2018, Pettit gave Miller counterfeit oxycodone pills laced with the powerful opioid fentanyl.

An autopsy found that Miller died from an accidental overdose , via a combination of fentanyl, cocaine and alcohol.

Authorities found drugs they believe were from Pettit in Miller’s home, and evidence that Miller had crushed and sniffed oxycodone provided by Pettit.

Pettit has only been charged with providing the drugs, however, and not with having a direct role in Miller’s death. It was not immediately known if he had an attorney, and no relative or associate of Pettit could be found for comment.

After reports of Miller’s death circulated, Pettit sent an Instagram message to a friend saying, “Most likely I will die in jail,” according to the affidavit.

Pettit goes on to write, “I’m gonna get off the grid. Move to another country.”

Investigators also obtained text messages between Miller and Pettit before the sale, in which Miller proclaims his love for oxycodone, or “percs” for the brand name Percocet, and also asks for “bars” of Xanax and a “ball” of cocaine.

“When can u get em?” Miller asks, according to a transcript of the exchange contained in court filings.

“Probably in an hour or 2. They are 30 ea,” Pettit replies.

“Any chance I can get 10 of those, 10 bars and a ball?” Miller asks.

“Yeah for sure,” Pettit replies.

The autopsy report found that Miller had a history of drug and alcohol abuse, but had not previously overdosed or been hospitalized for any reason.

The report notes that Miller’s many tattoos included one of an hourglass on his arm with the words, “Only so much time left in this crazy world.”

Miller’s assistant told investigators he was feeling positive about the projects he was working on, but had a tendency to slip into drug binges.

Miller’s family declined comment on the arrest through a spokesman.

U.S. Attorney Nick Hanna said in a statement after Pettit’s arrest that “Fentanyl disguised as a genuine pharmaceutical is a killer — which is being proven every single day in America.”

The charges were first reported Wednesday by NBC News.

A Pittsburgh native whose real name was Malcolm James Myers McCormick, Miller’s rhymes included frank discussion of his depression and drug use, earning him fans among some of the biggest names in hip-hop.

Performers at a concert in his honor included Chance the Rapper and Travis Scott.

He was also in a two-year relationship with Grande that ended earlier in 2018. After his death she posted an affectionate video of him on her Instagram page and released a song, “Thank U Next,” that lovingly mentions him, saying, “Wish I could say thank you to Malcolm ’cause he was an angel.”

Miller is the latest musician whose death has been linked in recent years to a national wave of opioid abuse and overdoses. Prince died in 2016 when he took counterfeit pills laced with fentanyl that looked like a generic version of the painkiller Vicodin.

Matthew Roberts, guitarist for the band 3 Doors Down, also died of an overdose in 2016, and had fentanyl and hydrocodone in his system.

(Officer attacked)

HEMET — Four students were arrested, and one required medical treatment after a near-riot broke out at Rancho Viejo Middle School Friday afternoon, Aug. 23, according to Hemet PD officials. The students arrested, who range in age from 13 to 15-years-old, now face charges including felony assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, inciting a riot, participating in a riot, and multiple other charges.

According to officials, yesterday’s violent incident began shortly before 4 p.m., when a 15-year-old Tahquitz High School student walked onto the campus of Rancho Viejo Middle School and became involved in an argument with a school employee, Hemet Police Lt. Eric Dickson said after the arrests.

After a school resource officer arrested the teen for causing the disturbance, several other students became involved and allegedly attacked the officer – causing him to issue an emergency radio broadcast for help.

Although Dickson did not specify the nature of the initial confrontation or why the high school student had gone to the middle school, Dickson explained, “The Tahquitz student threatened to harm the employee, and the school resource officer was called.”

When the school resource officer arrived and attempted to make contact the Tahquitz student who was causing the disturbance, she refused to speak with him and attempted to leave the campus, according to Dickson.

Based on information gathered from the school staff, the officer arrested the girl for making threats against a public employee.

As the officer was walking the teen to his vehicle, a crowd of students began to form around them and became aggressive with the officer; demanding that he release the arrested girl.

“As the officer attempted to place the student into his vehicle, one of the surrounding students blocked the car door from closing, and another student moved in closer to the officer,” Dickson continued.

As the situation escalated, one of the students allegedly attacked and then began trying to punch the arresting officer, at which time he put out an emergency radio broadcast that he was under attack and he requested priority assistance.

While the officer pushed back against the aggressive students and fended off the 13-year-old male student who was physically attacking him, officers who heard his radio call for help converged onto the middle school campus from around the city.

“Ultimately, with the assistance of school staff and additional officers, the crowd was dispersed, and three more students were arrested,” Dickson continued. “Thankfully, neither the officer nor any of the students were injured.”

Although nobody was injured during the melee, medical aid was requested to the campus to treat one of the students “for a preexisting condition,” according to Dickson.

All four of the arrested students were transported to Riverside County Juvenile Hall where they were booked on a variety of charges related to the incident. None of the student’s names were released due to their ages.

Those arrested included:

15-year-old female Hemet resident for threatening a public employee and resisting arrest.

13-year-old male Hemet resident for felony assault on a police officer, inciting a riot and participating in a riot.

14-year-old male Hemet resident for inciting a riot and participating in a riot.

13-year-old male Hemet resident for inciting a riot and participating in a riot.

RIVERSIDE (CNS) – A Lake Elsinore man accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting a girl over a four-year period pleaded not guilty today to 20 felony charges.

Edwin Castro Sangalang, 45, was arrested on July 16 following an investigation by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. The felony counts filed against Sangalang include aggravated sexual assault of a child, forced oral copulation of a minor and sexual penetration by force or fear.

The defendant was arraigned before Superior Court Judge O.G. Magno, who scheduled a felony settlement conference for Sept. 27 at the Riverside Hall of Justice. Sangalang is being held on $1 million bail at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta.

According to sheriff’s investigators, Sangalang allegedly began molesting the victim, whose identity was not released, while he resided in Chino Hills and Perris, when the girl was 9 years old. She is now 13. The victim’s relationship to the defendant, if any, was not disclosed.

Detectives learned of the alleged abuse after they were called to a residence in the 2400 block of Gazania Way in Lake Elsinore, according to the sheriff’s department.

Sufficient evidence was gathered to obtain an arrest warrant for the defendant, who was tracked down at his workplace in the area of Westwood Boulevard and Weyburn Avenue in Los Angeles, where he was taken into custody without incident, sheriff’s officials said.
Sangalang has no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.
