A Bloomington man is behind bars after he allegedly beat a woman bloody, then dragged her inside a home and tried to clean her up to avoid San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies detecting a “massive head injury.”

Michael Gordon, 40, was reported to the SBSD just before 3:30 a.m. Wednesday for allegedly “beating a female and dragging her inside a residence in the 17800 block of Taylor Avenue,” officials said in a news release.

When deputies arrived, the door was open, and they “identified themselves and carefully entered the home under exigent circumstances,” officials added.

Inside, deputies spotted Gordon and a woman hiding under a blanket.

“Gordon was holding the female victim against her will and concealing a massive head injury,” the release said. “Gordon was also attempting to cover up a large amount of blood gushing from the back of her head.”

That woman was then rendered medical aid and taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for “a severe head wound and other serious injuries.” She remains hospitalized.

A witness informed deputies that Gordon had assaulted the woman earlier that morning as well, this time in front of a home in the 10100 block of Alder Avenue.

“She was struck in the back of the head with a metal pole which resulted in a serious head injury,” the release said. “Gordon was able to lure the female victim to the secondary location where he assaulted her again outside and eventually drug her inside the residence until deputies arrived.”

Inside the home, Gordon tried to cover up the wounds, forcing the woman to shower to wash away blood and hiding her blood-soaked clothing, investigators said.

Gordon was booked into the West Valley Detention Center. Jail records indicate he faces charges of aggravated mayhem, kidnapping, making threats with the intent to terrorize and assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm.

His bail is set at $1 million, and he’s due to appear in Rancho Superior Court on Friday.

A Cal Fire captain who helped fight the Eaton fire last month was slain and investigators say she likely knew her killer.

Rebecca Marodi, 49, was found Monday at a residence on Rancho Villa Road in Ramona, according to a San Diego Sheriff’s Office news release. Deputies responded around 8:58 p.m. to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon and found Marodi with multiple stab wounds.

Marodi was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. Homicide detectives are investigating the killing as a potential domestic violence incident and think Marodi knew her killer. The circumstances and motivation of the killing are unknown. Anyone with more information has been asked to contact the San Diego Sheriff’s Homicide Unit at 858-285-6330 or after hours at 858-868-3200.

Marodi started as a volunteer firefighter in 1993 in Moreno Valley and worked as a seasonal firefighter in Riverside and San Bernardino counties from 1994 to 2000, according to Cal Fire and the Riverside County Fire Department. Marodi was a fire apparatus engineer in 2007 and promoted to captain in 2022.

Marodi was among the many firefighters who helped battle the deadly Eaton fire last month, according to an Instagram post.

PALM DESERT, CA — A 2025 trial date was set for a registered sex offender accused of fatally slashing his year-old daughter before throwing her off a cliff in the mountains south of the Coachella Valley, as well as attacking the child’s mother and a good Samaritan.

Adam Slater, 53, is charged with felony counts of murder, attempted murder, assault on a child under 8 years old resulting in death, assault with a deadly weapon and child concealing, and one misdemeanor count of resisting arrest.

He also faces a special circumstance allegation of committing a murder during the commission of a kidnapping, which makes him eligible for the death penalty if the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office decides to pursue it, and a sentence-enhancing allegation of using a knife in the commission of a murder.

The defendant’s trial is scheduled to begin on Jan. 24, according to case records.

Slater was arrested May 7, 2020 in connection with a spate of alleged crimes the previous day that culminated in a rollover crash on Highway 74 near Pinyon Crest, where he allegedly threw his daughter over “a steep cliff into a ravine,” according to sheriff’s Sgt. Ben Ramirez.

Slater remains jailed without bail at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facilty in Banning.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, the series of events on May 6, 2020, began about 14 miles from the crash site in the 41000 block of Washington Street, outside the Southwest Community Church in Indian Wells, where deputies responded to a stabbing call at about 8:30 a.m. that was described as a “domestic violence incident.”

Deputies located an injured woman who was taken to a hospital with multiple stab wounds.
Slater and the woman — who was six months pregnant at the time of the attack — were married, and the year-old daughter was theirs together, officials said.

Following the attack, Slater allegedly sped away in a vehicle with the child. Deputies learned soon afterward that a rollover crash reported on Highway 74 around six miles south of Palm Desert could be connected to the original call.

According to sheriff’s officials, passing motorists attempted to help Slater and his daughter escape the wreckage, but he allegedly stabbed one man attempting to help rescue his daughter.

“The suspect then took the girl from the arms of the male he stabbed. Multiple witnesses saw the suspect take the child and throw her over a steep cliff into a ravine,” according to a sheriff’s department statement.

California Highway Patrol Officer Graham Aanestad testified during a preliminary hearing that he searched the area at the bottom of the cliff and saw hair peaking out from a pile of rocks. The child was found there, and pronounced dead at the scene.

It was unclear if she was already dead prior to being thrown off the cliff. But Investigator Dario Hernandez with the sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit testified that an autopsy determined her cause of death was multiple stab wounds to the chest.

“The injuries to the chest were consistent with an injury possibly from a knife or some sort of object,” Hernandez said.

After allegedly throwing the girl, Slater ran down into a canyon, where deputies detained him after a short foot chase, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries connected to the crash, authorities said. Slater was discharged from the hospital the next day and arrested shortly afterward.

It was unclear if the man he allegedly stabbed required medical treatment.

Slater was in violation of the terms of his parole, according to California’s Megan’s Law website.

He was convicted in 1995 of sexually penetrating a victim with a foreign object by force and served about two years in state prison before being released in 1997.

The defendant exhibited a “clear pattern of violence against women” with whom he became romantically involved, but the victim was unaware.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — A 40-year-old handyman who fatally beat his fiancee in a “gruesome” attack that included biting her and breaking her neck at her Woodcrest home was convicted Tuesday of first-degree murder and other offenses.

A Riverside jury deliberated less than two days before finding Eduardo Avalos Escoto guilty of the 2019 slaying of 42-year-old Brandie Frazier.

Brandie Frazier in an undated photo. (Image: Riverside County DA’s Office)

The jury went behind closed doors Thursday afternoon to weigh evidence from the two-week trial. Riverside County Superior Court Judge Valerie Navarro gave the panel Friday off going into the holiday weekend, and jurors returned to the Riverside Hall of Justice on Tuesday, deliberating most of the day before announcing verdicts.

Along with the murder count, Escoto was convicted of sentence- enhancing allegations of inflicting great bodily injury, using sophistication in perpetrating a crime and taking advantage of a position of trust.

The judge scheduled a sentencing hearing for Dec. 10. Escoto, who is being held without bail at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta, is facing 30 years to life in state prison.

According to a trial brief filed by the District Attorney’s Office, the defendant and Frazier met while he was working as a handyman around her and her mother’s property in the 17000 block of Palm Road, near California Citrus State Historic Park, in 2018.

Escoto and the victim began dating, culminating in his moving in with her and living in one of two residential dwellings on the property, occupied by Frazier and her two young children, while her mother, identified only as “L.B.,” resided in the adjacent house, the brief said.

The defendant, a Mexican national, exhibited a “clear pattern of violence against women” with whom he became romantically involved, but that was unknown to the victim and her mother, according to the brief. The narrative said that in a prior relationship with a woman in Mexico, he had beaten her and threatened her life.

Exactly what happened between Escoto and Frazier on the night of Aug. 31, 2019, is uncertain, but according to court papers, the defendant turned “extremely violent.”

The prosecution described the attack as a “gruesome murder,” noting that not only was Frazier “beaten violently,” but her “neck was broken, and the defendant went so far as to bite her face,” according to the brief.

“The manner in which the murder was committed was not only violent, but extremely intimate and personal,” the document stated.

On the morning of Sept. 1, 2019, L.B. became concerned when she didn’t see her daughter and walked over to the victim’s house.

“She found her grandchildren crying and went looking for her daughter … whom she found brutally beaten and showing no signs of life in her bed,” according to the brief.

Escoto had fled and immediately became the prime suspect. Court papers said he stole Frazier’s “jewelry and other valuables,” which he quickly hocked at a pawn shop.

The Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force, whose members include D.A.’s office investigators, discovered Escoto went to Mexico. Mexican law enforcement agencies were asked to assist in finding him. However, in June 2022, authorities learned he had returned to the U.S. and was in Washington state before heading to Texas, where he was arrested in July 2022 by Mitchell County sheriff’s deputies at a gas station in Colorado City.

He was extradited to California weeks later.

Escoto had no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.

Valley Restart Shelter is accepting bids to install approximately 350 feet of seven-foot-tall wrought iron fencing, with a curved top, along the front of the property at 200 E. Menlo Ave. in Hemet. The fence will include two 25-foot rolling gates and one 4-foot pedestrian gate.

“We hope to have this project completed by the end of the year,” VRS Executive Director Javier H. Lopez said. “It’s been a long process but we’re looking forward to completing it soon.”

On Friday, March 31, 2023, at 6:47 PM, deputies from the Sheriff’s Southwest Station, assigned to the Metro Team, responded to the 28600 block of Old Town Front Street, Temecula, regarding a suspect who strangled his spouse during a domestic violence incident. Prior to deputies arriving, the suspect left the location on his motorcycle to an unknown location. Deputies located the victim, who was transported to a local hospital and treated for moderate non-life-threatening injuries. Deputies positively identified the suspect as Ty Rivers, a 39-year-old resident of Menifee. Information gathered during the investigation revealed Ty Rivers was a member of an outlaw motorcycle gang and was known to carry firearms. Deputies, with assistance from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Team and Aviation Unit, checked several locations related to Ty Rivers, but he was not located. A Ramey arrest warrant for Ty Rivers was sought and granted by a judge at a local courthouse.

On Thursday, April 13, 2023, at 3:37 PM, the information about Ty Rivers was given to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Warrant Enforcement Team (FWET), who located and arrested Ty Rivers in the 38100 block of Silver Fox Court, Murrieta. Ty Rivers was booked into custody at Cois Byrd Detention Center for Domestic Violence and Strangulation. A bail enhancement was sought and granted in the amount of $500,000.
