Pedestrian, Struck Killed By Commuter Train In Riverside

Date:

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a commuter train Tuesday as he walked along tracks just west of downtown Riverside.

The fatality occurred around 3 p.m. in the area of Washington Street and the Riverside (91) Freeway, according to the Riverside Police Department.

Officer Ryan Railsback, spokesman for the department, told City News Service the man was hit by a Metrolink train, but it was unclear why the victim was on the tracks.

The train driver immediately stopped, and Riverside Fire Department paramedics reached the location a few minutes later, pronouncing the pedestrian dead at the scene.

His identity was not immediately released.

There were no injuries reported aboard the train.

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad tracks were temporarily shut down at the location. It was unknown when train traffic would resume Tuesday afternoon.
