The man was allegedly armed with a machete and metal pipe and refused law enforcement commands to drop them.
JURUPA VALLEY, CA — A man was shot and killed Friday morning by deputy gunfire in Jurupa Valley, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office announced.
The shooting was reported around 7:30 a.m. in the area of 34th Street and Crestmore Road during a cleanup of the Santa Ana River bottom.

Deputies with the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station were assisting Riverside County Parks rangers with the cleanup. The river bottom is known as a homeless encampment space and law enforcement regularly conducts clearouts.
During Friday’s operation, a man with a machete and a large metal pipe was encountered. Deputies commanded the man to drop the weapons, but he refused, according to the sheriff’s office.
“Deputies utilized a less lethal device to gain compliance, but the device was ineffective,” the agency continued.
The armed man was “erratic and assaultive toward deputies, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred,” according to the sheriff’s office.
It’s not clear how many rounds hit the man. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity was not released.
No deputies or rangers were injured during the incident.
The deputy who shot the man will be placed on paid administrative leave while investigators from the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office assigned to the Riverside Sheriff’s Force Investigations Detail review the incident.
The name of the involved deputy was not released.
