Evan Jon Zavala, 24, was behind bars following the grim discovery Monday night in the 33000 block of Breckenridge Trail in Wildomar.

WILDOMAR, CA — A Wildomar man was being held in county jail Tuesday in lieu of $1 million bail following his 64-year-old mother’s stabbing death.

Evan Jon Zavala, 24, was arrested on suspicion of murder after sheriff’s deputies responded just before 10 p.m. Monday to a home in the 33000 block of Breckenridge Trail in Wildomar.

It’s not clear who called for help, but deputies found a wounded woman inside the residence. First aid was rendered until paramedics arrived and transported her to a local hospital, where she died from her injuries. Her identity was not immediately released.

Zavala, who was at the scene, is the woman’s son. He was detained for questioning and subsequently arrested. He was booked into Southwest Detention Center and is due to appear in court Thursday.

Information about a possible motive for the alleged killing was not released nor were details about a weapon type.

The sheriff’s department said the investigation into the slaying was continuing, but no additional suspects were sought.

Zavala has no criminal history in Riverside County, according to court records.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Investigator J. Juarez with the Central Homicide Unit at 951-955-1700 or Investigator T. Quick with the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station at 951-245-3300.
