The Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) Art Gallery is pleased to present the annual student art exhibition, “Soaring!”

The online exhibition can be found at www.msjc.edu/artgallery.

This group show celebrates the immense talent of the student artists at both the San Jacinto and Menifee campuses. All artwork on display was created during the 2021-22 academic year by MSJC students. Participating artworks are nominated by instructors whose selection criteria are to represent the best examples and a wide range of subject matter and media. The show features the range of media that students learn at the school, including drawing, painting, two-dimensional and three-dimensional design, ceramic arts, sculpture, bronze casting, photography and digital illustration.

The exhibition shows the diverse, individual outcomes of instructor and course studio assignments. Although this exhibition is typically presented in our MSJC Art Gallery on the San Jacinto Campus, this new online version will be able to showcase the talents of our students to a wider audience.

Please email MSJC Art Instructor JKnuth@msjc.edu for more information.

The Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) Art Gallery, California Family Life Center (CFLC) and Worth Visual Arts are pleased to present a.r.t.e.r.y.ʼs 2022 “The Eclipse Project” exhibit now through May 19 at the college’s San Jacinto Campus. This exhibition marks the 17th year collaboration between MSJC, CFLC, and Worth Visual Arts.

“A Walk Through Time” encourages you to walk in another’s shoes, travel through time, and share the challenges, conflicts, joys, and accomplishments in each individual’s life. Artist journals accompany the artwork on exhibit.

This year’s exhibition will feature ceramic shoes made by CFLC youth mentors and senior citizens. The shoes have incredible stories to tell, with each shoe showing the different journey of each artist and the wear and tear that a well-lived life leaves. These collaborative works have inspired the senior citizens and a.r.t.e.r.y. students to think about their lives in new and exciting ways. When the seniors work with young people, they feel a sense of rejuvenation and are inspired to share their life stories with them. As the a.r.t.e.r.y. youth mentors have worked with the seniors, it has inspired them to think beyond their current lives and motivated them to think about how they can be of service to others. Their collaboration has brought a sense of understanding and appreciation between generations.

San Jacinto College (MSJC)

Mentoring, art and community service are key elements to CFLCʼs a.r.t.e.r.y. program. This yearʼs exhibit emphasizes mentoring skills, focusing on the transference of creative energy, vision and goals through art with children and the senior population. A.r.t.e.r.y. mentors work with various ages, building a one-to-one relationship with preschool to senior populations. Youth mentors realize the importance of art benefiting their choices in career paths, while bridging positive endeavors within their community. By exhibiting their artwork at the MSJC Art Gallery, youth are exposed to college as a more attainable path for their future while assimilating comfortably in a college atmosphere.

Student and mentor introspective journals will be displayed and are a crucial part of the a.r.t.e.r.y. program. The journal entries help reveal the artists’ thoughts on their past and present as their lives change and grow beyond their homes and comfort zones.

The show has been made possible by the cooperative efforts of the MSJC Art Gallery, Worth Visual Arts Programs, Michele Worth, California Family Life Centers (CFLC), Planet Youth, Empower Youth, and Rubidoux YOC. Participating collaborators are the Camelot Senior Center and Elsinore Community Senior Center.

The Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) Art Gallery is pleased to welcome the public to its next online Art Talk on April 14, featuring Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello, a design, architecture, artist, and activist duo based in the Bay Area.

The MSJC Art Talk, generously sponsored by the MSJC Foundation, will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. April 14. Details are available at www.msjc.edu/artgallery.

Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello’s work ranges from the political to the playful and often a combination of both. Last year, they won the Design of the Year Award from London’s Design Museum for their hot pink teeter-totter on the Mexico/United States border wall.

The duo draws, builds, 3D prints, teach, and write about architecture and design as a cultural endeavor deeply influenced by craft traditions and contemporary technologies. They are the founding partners in the Oakland-based make-tank Emerging Objects. Wired magazine writes of their innovations, “while others busy themselves trying to prove that it’s possible to 3-D print a house, Rael and San Fratello are occupied with trying to design one people would actually want to live in.”

They also speculate about the social agency of design, particularly along the border between the U.S. and Mexico, in their studio RAEL SAN FRATELLO. You can see their drawings, models, and objects in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, the Design Museum London, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Both Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello earned their master’s degrees in architecture from Columbia University. Rael is currently Associate Professor of architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, and San Fratello at San Jose State University. They have additionally taught at Clemson University and Southern California Institute of Architecture. They are past winners of the Metropolis Next Generation Competition, the Sukkah City International Design Competition, and received first place in the Van Alen Institute “Life at the Speed of Rail” competition. In 2013, the firm was the winner of both Design Lab: Next Nest competition sponsored by SITE Santa Fe and P3: People, Prosperity, and the Planet Competition sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The MSJC Art Gallery is currently presenting “She Se Puede,” a special solo exhibition by artist and MSJC associate art instructor Conchi Sanford, through April 21 at its San Jacinto Campus location. The Art Gallery is in Building 1400 on the college’s San Jacinto Campus, 1499 N. State. St. It is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) Art Gallery is pleased to present “She Se Puede,” a special solo exhibition by artist and MSJC associate art instructor Conchi Sanford, from March 21 to April 21 at its San Jacinto Campus location.

An MSJC Art Talk, generously sponsored by the MSJC Foundation, will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. March 24. A closing reception for the exhibit is scheduled for 4-6 p.m. Saturday, April 16. Details will become available at www.msjc.edu/artgallery.

“She Se Puede” is a unique opportunity to explore Sanford’s sculptural and luminescent resin-stained glass works. Sanford’s abstract sculptures have a basis in representational art, however her forms often resemble bodies in motion or compositions that have defined their own development and growth.

Sanford approaches artmaking in a very corporeal way. The physicality of her art making extends beyond her own studio practice and reaches out to the viewer. Her forms almost ask you to place your own body in relationship to the sculptures themselves. Sanford creates armatures layered with colored resin. The resin has a mysterious quality in Sanford’s hands, it simultaneously looks like it is letting light in while emitting light out from the inside.

Sanford also brings the idea of light into her new resin-stained glass works. In Sanford’s continually creating mind, she turns the classic stained-glass window into an enigmatic vehicle for artistic exploration. Her windows use a similar layering of diaphanous color to illuminate an antiqued idealized form.

As a first-generation American, Sanford’s goals reflect in her lifetime exposure to her own ethnic background, cultural diversity and embody her response to her bi-national upbringing.

Sanford is an adjunct instructor at MSJC and Crafton Hills College and CTA union board member. She received a bachelor’s degree in 2000 from California State University, Long Beach, and an MFA from Claremont Graduate University. There, she was able to transition from painting to sculpture, with a degree in Integrated 3-D Design with an emphasis in wood, fiber and metals.

The Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) Art Gallery is proud to present “Our Time,” the college’s annual student exhibition, which can now be appreciated at www.msjc.edu/artgallery.

This spring has presented our students, MSJC and the world some challenges. We are facing those challenges and tackling them head on. One of the ways in which we are doing this is by featuring our annual student exhibition online.

The Mt.
The group show celebrates the immense talent of the MSJC student artists during the 2020-2021 academic year at both the San Jacinto and Menifee Valley campuses. The exhibit showcases the works of students who are developing their creativity and technical skills at the community college level. Additionally, this exhibition shows the diverse, individual outcomes of instructor and course studio assignments. Although this exhibition is typically presented in our MSJC Art Gallery on the San Jacinto Campus, this new online version will showcase the talents of our students to a potentially broader audience.

This exhibition is a highlight of the year for the campus, students, and surrounding community. Please join us in celebrating the artistic expressions of our MSJC students!

The Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) Art Gallery will present an online Art Talk featuring MSJC associate faculty member Tania Jazz Mont from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28.

Jazz Mont was the last artist to have an in-person show with her “Dizzy Drawings” exhibition in the MSJC Art Gallery, but the COVID-19 pandemic cut her show short last March. The Art Talk is supported by the MSJC Foundation.

She explores and updates classic themes in art history. She adds her dizzying personal style to portraiture, still-life, and landscape. It might take you a moment upon viewing the work to see she is an artist who has digested these themes and turned them on their head. In her paintings, you might find echoes of Henri Matisse or Philip Guston in the gestures and brush work. You might also find issues of gender, identity, and sexuality.

Jazz Mont is Latinx and a member of the LGBTQ community. The subjects of her paintings draw from her personal life. She often paints images of her wife and her gay and Latinx friends and family. These influences that surround her bring images of a changing America.

She is an associate faculty member at MSJC. She received her master’s degree from Claremont Graduate University and her bachelor’s degree from California State University, Fullerton.

She has had solo exhibitions at Taylor Junction Gallery in Joshua Tree; East Side International, Los Angeles; and Apothecary Gallery, Pomona. Her work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions throughout Southern California as well.

The Art Talk will be held via Zoom as a result of the ongoing pandemic.

The Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) Art Gallery, California Family Life Center and Worth Visual Arts are pleased to present a.r.t.e.r.y.ʼs 2020-21 The Eclipse Project exhibit.

This free online exhibition at msjc.edu/artgallery launched Tuesday, Jan. 19, and marks the 14th collaboration between MSJC and California Family Life Center (CFLC).

“An eclipse takes place when one heavenly body such as a moon or planet moves into the shadow of another heavenly body,” NASA notes. With lunar and solar eclipses, we experience the passing and alignment of our heavenly bodies creating a beautiful and miraculous encounter. Likewise, seniors, children and youth come together to share their past and present stories – an ecliptic encounter revealing life’s experiences bridging generations. The Eclipse program focuses on youth mentors, seniors and children working together to create artworks, using mindful communication skills gaining mutual respect, trust, and friendship with one another.

This year’s exhibition focuses on clay self-portraits created by multiple generations: the California Family Life Centers (Elsinore, Hemet, & Rubidoux) a.r.t.e.r.y art mentors, Stratton Community Center senior citizens, and Kin Care. Traveling into the future, mentors and Kin Care’s (children) artists’ express their projected age by 30-plus years, forwarding their physical appearance and life stories through the artwork.

Sculptural methods are taught by mentors to aid with the creative vision and stories of their participants. Through collaborative mentoring, seniors and a.r.t.e.r.y mentors alike think about their lives in new ways, including seniors experiencing a sense of rejuvenation and inspiration to share their life stories with youth.

Likewise, as a.r.t.e.r.y mentors worked with seniors and children, it inspired youth mentors to think beyond their current lives, further motivating them as to how they can be of service to others. Overall, their collaborative exchange and artwork has brought a sense of understanding and appreciation between all generations.

Mentoring, art and community service are key elements to CFLCʼs a.r.t.e.r.y. programs. CFLC and Worth Visual Arts were awarded the 2015 Americans for the Arts, National Association of Counties (NACo) and Honorable Mention from the Association of Counties Arts & Culture. The Eclipse Project exhibit emphasizes mentoring skills, focused on the transference of creative energy, and goals through art in the community. A.r.t.e.r.y. offers future career paths to youth, while bridging program objectives to positive endeavors within the community. By exhibiting the artwork at the MSJC Art Gallery, youth are exposed to college as a more attainable path for their future while assimilating comfortably into a college atmosphere.

The show has been made possible by the cooperative efforts of the MSJC Art Gallery, Worth Visual Arts Programs, Michele Worth, California Family Life Centers (CFLC); Planet Youth, Empower Youth, Rubidoux YOC. Participating collaborators are Stratton Community Center & KinCare.

The Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) Art Gallery will host an online artist’s talk with John Seed, author and MSJC professor emeritus of art and art history, from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24. The public event is supported by the MSJC Foundation.

Those looking to attend Thursday’s Artist’s Talk with Seed can log in with this Zoom information.
“Disrupted Realism” is the first book to survey the works of contemporary painters who are challenging and reshaping the tradition of Realism.

Helping art lovers, collectors, and artists approach and understand this compelling new phenomenon, it includes the works of 38 artists whose paintings respond to the subjectivity and disruptions of modern experience.

Seed, who believes we are “the most distracted society in the history of the world,” has selected artists he sees as visionaries in this developing movement. The artists’ impulses toward disruption are as individual as the artists themselves, but all share the need to include perception and emotion in their artistic process.

John Seed, Contributed

Six sections lay out and analyze common themes: “Toward Abstraction,” “Disrupted Bodies,” “Emotions and Identities,” “Myths and Visions,” “Patterns, Planes, and Formations,” and “Between Painting and Photography.” Interviews with each artist offer additional insight into some of the most incisive and relevant painting being created today.

Seed has written about art and artists for Arts of Asia, Art Ltd., Harvard Magazine, International Artist, Hyperallergic and the Huffington Post.

For more information, please visit www.msjc.edu/artgallery or contact Art Professor John Knuth at Jknuth@msjc.edu.

Mt. San Jacinto College serves about 27,000 students in a district covering 1,700 square miles from the San Gorgonio Pass to Temecula, with campuses in San Jacinto, Menifee, Banning and Temecula.

Late start classes for MSJC’s Fall 2020 semester begin Oct. 19. Registration for the 8-week courses begins online on Oct. 5.

The Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) Art Gallery will host a public online discussion about “The Art and Life of Noah Purifoy” from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10.

Franklin Sirmans, the director of the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), will lead the one-hour Zoom discussion supported by the MSJC Foundation.

Noah Purifoy (1917-2004) lived and worked most of his life in Los Angeles and Joshua Tree. A founding director of the Watts Towers Art Center, his earliest body of sculpture, constructed out of charred debris from the 1965 Watts Rebellion, was the basis for “66 Signs of Neon,” a landmark group exhibition about the riots that traveled to nine venues from 1966 to 1969. In line with the postwar period’s general fascination with the street and its objects, Purifoy’s 66 Signs of Neon constituted a Duchampian approach to the fire-molded alleys of Watts, a strategy that profoundly impacted artists such as David Hammons, John Outterbridge and Senga Nengudi.

In the late 1980s, after 11 years of public policy work for the California Arts Council – where Purifoy initiated programs such as Artists in Social Institutions, bringing art into the state prison system – Purifoy moved his practice to the Mojave desert. He lived there for the last 15 years of his life, creating 10 acres of large-scale sculpture constructed entirely from junked materials.

Franklin Sirmans has been the director of the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) since fall 2015. Since coming to PAMM, he has overseen the acquisition of more than a thousand works of art by donation or purchase. At PAMM, Sirmans has pursued his vision of PAMM as “the people’s museum,” representing a Miami lens, by strengthening existing affiliate groups such as the PAMM Fund for African American Art and creating the International Women’s Committee and the Latin American and Latinx Art Fund.
