On December 17, 2023, around 1:46 p.m., deputies assigned to the Palm Desert Sheriff’s Station responded to the 72000 block of Highway 111, Palm Desert, regarding a subject who appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis on the roof of a business.

A male subject resident of Cathedral City, was at the location and agitated. He was throwing roof tiles off the roof and threatening the public. Members of the Riverside Sheriff’s Crisis Negotiation Team, Riverside Sheriff’s Aviation Unit, and Cal Fire responded to the location to assist. Deputies responded to the roof and detained him without incident. He was escorted off the roof and transported to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Kohler booked on murder, hit-run death after Palm Avenue scooter crash

Mason Drew Kohler, 31, was booked on felony murder, hit-and-run death, and DUI charges, according to the Riverside County jail roster, which lists a Hemet PD arrest at Palm Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue. Hemet police say two pedestrians on an electric scooter were struck there about 6:55 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22; one was pronounced dead. Police have not named the driver, and the decedent's identity remains withheld.
