FBI puts 2025 murder rate at 4.1, tying 1955 and 1956

Date:

Murder and nonnegligent manslaughter offenses fell an estimated 18.1% from 2024, the FBI said. The Uniform Crime Reporting Program put the 2025 estimated rate at 4.1 per 100,000 inhabitants. In its August 2026 Reported Crimes in the Nation release, the bureau said that rate ties the figures recorded in 1955 and 1956 for the lowest murder rate since FBI estimations began.

The estimated violent crime rate was 327.6 offenses per 100,000, down from 362.9 a year earlier. The bureau reported that the violent crime rate declined 9.7%, which it called the largest year-to-year decline in violent crime rates since estimations began in 1936. Violent crime offenses decreased an estimated 9.3%.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection, announcing preliminary Fiscal Year 2025 numbers in October 2025, reported 237,565 Southwest Border apprehensions by the U.S. Border Patrol. CBP said that was the lowest fiscal-year total since 1970. Fiscal Year 2025 ran from October 2024 through September 2025.

The Census Bureau’s September 2026 reports put the official poverty rate at 10.2% in 2025, down 0.5 percentage points, with 34.5 million people in poverty. Census called the rate one of the lowest on record. The Supplemental Poverty Measure was 13.1%, not statistically different from 2024, Census said.

Median household income reached $87,460, up 2.6% from $85,210 and the highest on record dating back to 1967. Comparative statements in the income report are statistically significant at the 90% confidence level unless otherwise noted.

Federal Reserve Z.1 accounts for the second quarter of 2026 showed household and nonprofit organization net worth at $195.9 trillion, up $12.8 trillion from the prior quarter.

Provisional data from CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics estimated 69,973 drug overdose deaths in 2025, a decrease of almost 14% from the 81,313 deaths estimated for 2024. The release described a third straight yearly decrease. CDC said the 2025 counts are provisional and subject to change.
