In-Custody Death Investigation

Details:

On August 16, 2022, deputies assigned to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department– Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility (SCF), located an adult male inside a housing unit in need of medical attention. Medical staff at SCF determined the inmate needed to be transported to a local hospital for treatment. American Medical Response (AMR) personnel transported the inmate to an area hospital where he remained. His health continued to decline until he passed away on August 27, 2022.

Investigators from the Corrections Intelligence Bureau and the Coroner’s Bureau responded and assumed the investigation. The inmate’s identity will not be released at this time, pending notification to the next of kin. There are no signs of foul play and due to the ongoing status of the investigation, no further information is currently available.
