Menifee Family Member Accidentally Shot While Sleeping

Date:

The victim was inside her home, asleep in her bedroom, when she was awakened by a loud bang and sudden lower pain.

An accidental shooting in a Menifee family home left one person wounded and sent a reminder about gun safety.

At about 9:48 p.m. July 20, Menifee police were called to the 500 block of S. Victoria Avenue about the shooting.

An investigation revealed the victim was inside the residence, asleep in her bedroom, when she was awakened by a loud bang and sudden lower back pain. She had been shot, and a bullet hole was found in a wall connecting her room to her sister’s bedroom.

The sister’s boyfriend was present. He said he was walking out of his bedroom when his gun went off on its own. The weapon was found in a backpack and a spent casing was on the floor, according to police.

The gun was registered to the boyfriend, and he admitted to putting it away but was not holding the gun when it fired, police said.

No arrests were announced, and the type of firearm involved was not disclosed.

The victim was taken to a local hospital and treated for a non-life-threatening wound.
