One person was killed and another injured Tuesday in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 79 in Winchester.

The collision happened about 1:20 p.m. on the southbound side of the highway at Simpson Road, near Winchester Farms, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The agency said that a BMW sedan and another vehicle were involved in the crash, but the circumstances were not immediately clear.

Witnesses told the CHP that one of the vehicles was speeding and going around traffic on the two-lane corridor.

Riverside County Fire Department crews arrived within 15 minutes and found one of the crash victims trapped inside the wreckage. The party, whose identity was not disclosed, was extricated and pronounced dead at the scene.

The other victim, also not identified, was taken by ambulance to a regional trauma center with moderate to major injuries, according to officials at the scene.

Both sides of the highway were shut down because of the crash, and CHP officers were diverting traffic onto side streets.
