(Here Come The Girl’s)

Preview the Softball Season before it starts

The girls in the Mountain Pass League are ready to lace up their cleats, hit the field, and get to work. Softball is back and we couldn’t be more excited. Last season Beaumont finished as the number one team in the Mountain Pass League with an 18-8 record and 10-0 in league play. They graduated six girls out of 18, so they have a healthy mix of returning and new players. They lost in the first round of the playoffs against El Modena. El Modena scored ten runs and held Beaumont scoreless in the game. The Cougars will be coming back with a chip on their shoulder and ready to play some ball.

The West Valley Mustangs finished in second place last season. They graduated a host of seniors (9), at the end of the season. This could be troublesome for the Mustangs: they will have a bunch of new girls on the team. Last season they outscored their opponents 217-111, it will be tough to replicate that kind of production. However, we know ACE pitcher Serena Herbranson will be returning for her senior year. Herbranson was “lights out” last season: her pitches have major heat on them and batters struggle tracking them down. With a whole other year of training under her belt she will be dangerous in the circle this season.

Tigers are coming in hot

San Jacinto placed third last year and posted an impressive run ratio against their opponents ,219-97. They couldn’t keep the momentum up in the playoffs, losing in the second round against Wilson. San Jacinto only graduated three seniors last year, but among those was their best pitcher Alexis “DLC” De La Cruz. Their team is well-built and put together: they should put together another playoff run this season.

Hemet came in fourth place last season. Their record was 8-16, but they only graduated one senior. They have a lot of returning players this season who are looking to get revenge. Their pitching staff led by Kassidy Long and Payton Priefer may be the best duo in the league at this point, with all the other schools graduating starting pitchers last season. It will be exciting to see if the duo can lead their team to more wins than last year.

Tahquitz finished fifth place with a 5-13 record and graduated six seniors last year. Hopefully they have some fresh talent coming up to replace those girls, otherwise this could be another hard season for the Lady Titans.

Titans ready to get hits and finish on top this season

Citrus Hill finished last with a 4-18 record, 0-10 in league. There isn’t much known about their roster due to lack of information available online. It is safe to assume that unless there were major changes in their roster, it will be much of the same for the Hawks.

Notable Returning Players According To The Numbers:
Tahquitz’s Shelby Durant who led the league in Batting Average (.556), West Valleys Amarah Farley second in Batting Average (.519), along with Beaumont’s Julia Sheppard, who hit ten home runs last year and West Valley’s Serena Herbranson who hit five are all stand-outs. San Jacinto’s Lea Iribe and Maya Felipe both were top 5 (2&3 respectively) in RBI’s last season (33&31). Amarah Farley and Cayla Crawford led the league in stolen bases last year (17 &16). Kassidy Long(, Hemet, Julia Shephard, Beaumont, & Serena Herbranson and West Valley were top 5 in strikeouts (73,61,44 respectively) last season.

(Boys Basketball)

Who is King of the Court in the Mountain Pass League

The first week of league play is over. Let’s take a look at how the games went and who is sitting on top of the division currently. The West Valley Mustangs have been somewhat of a disappointment after an electric start. In their first league game, they fell to Tahquitz. This game was supposed to be West Valley’s to win as, before this, Tahquitz only had one win. Unfortunately West Valley came out flat in the second half and Tahquitz was able to steal the lead. West Valley would do their best to come back but their efforts would be in vain. Tahquitz would beat them 70-65. Two days later the Mustangs traveled to San Jacinto high school to play against the Tigers. West Valley wasn’t prepared for San Jacinto’s Jorden Hudson to have the game of his life. It didn’t matter what West Valley did they couldn’t keep up with Hudson who finished the game with 22 points and was 7 for 7 from the 3-point line. West Valley fell in this matchup 64-79 and now they are 0-2 in the league.

After beating West Valley, Tahquitz traveled to play Citrus Hill. It would be tough for Tahquitz to match Citrus Hill’s pace of play in that game and they would fall to the Hawks 83-40. Tahquitz is now 1-1 in the league. In their second game of league play, San Jacinto journeyed up the hill to play Beaumont. Beaumont controlled the first four quarters of the game leading San Jacinto by 10 points in the beginning of the fourth quarter. San Jacinto would have a huge quarter, scoring 22 points. Antoine Sullivan hit a last-second deep three-point shot to force the game to go over time. Neither team would deal the final dagger though. The game would eventually go to a second overtime where Beaumont would outscore San Jacinto and take the lead. The game finished with a score of 72-76 in favor of Beaumont. The Tigers are in the middle of the pack with a 1-1 record in the league.

Perhaps Hemet had the toughest schedule to start out the league season. They had to play back to back games against Beaumont and Citrus Hill. The two top dogs of the league. Hemet would give both schools a run for their money. Playing aggressively and with great energy. Even though they would go on to lose both games. The final score of the Citrus Hill game was 65-53 and the final score of the Beaumont game was 58-43. Hemet now has a 0-2 league record.

The current Mountain Pass League boys basketball standings are 1.Citrus Hill 2.Beaumont 3.San Jacinto 4.Tahquitz 5.Hemet 6.West Valley.

(Soccer Standings)

Lady-Bulldogs Appear To Be The Team To Beat This Season

High school soccer is in mid-season and league play just started for both boys and girls league. Let’s take a look at the current standings to see how the season is playing out thus far. In the boy’s division, San Jacinto high school is on top with a 2-0 record in the league. They have an overall record of 8-2-2 and have looked strong against their opponents. They have been playing great offense and defense this season scoring 27 goals this season so far. Their defense has also been impressive only allowing 12 goals being scored all season. If they can keep up this dominance they will surely make a deep run in the playoffs.

Tahquitz is hanging on in second place. They have 1 win in the league and a tie. Their overall record is 6-5-4 and they have more goals scored against them then scored for them. Tahquitz is holding on to this position right now but everyone else is right behind them in striking distance to take their spot. Beaumont is in third place with 1 win and 1 loss. The three remaining schools Citrus Hills, West Valley, and Hemet are all tied for fourth, fifth, and sixth place with 0 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie. The three of them have all struggled to score goals this season and need to find a solid striker who can put the ball in the net.

Things appear to be a little closer in the girl’s division. However, when you take a deeper look you will realize they aren’t. Tahquitz and Hemet are tied for first place with 2-0 records. Tahquitz has an overall 2-7-1 record on the season. They have only scored 11 goals this year and 7 of them came in their last two games. Tahquitz is enjoying this spot for now but they are sharing it with the giants of the league. The Lady-Dogs are having a magical season and much of it is thanks to the “Fab-5” a group of five girls that are all freshmen and have very impressive soccer resumes. They have dominated the club scene in the last few years all around the country and now they are taking their talents to high school. Thanks to these girls Hemet has an 11-3-1 overall record (2-0 in the league) they have outscored their opponents 65 goals to 14.

It seems the only school that poses a threat to Hemet would be San Jacinto. The Tigers have a 1-0-1 record in league play and an 9-2 record overall. They have scored 46 goals to their opponents 18 and have the firepower to compete with Hemet. Beaumont is in third place with 0-1-1 record and West Valley is tied with Citrus Hill with an 0-2 record. Citrus Hill really shouldn’t be that low: they have a 6-6-4 overall record and have outscored their opponents 28 goals to 18. Expect them to turn things around as the season goes on.

(Beaumont Baller Ready)

Keeping Defenses Around So-Cal On Their Toes

Jada Long of Beaumont High School is already making a case for herself to be named the top player in the Mountain Pass League. She is a natural scorer who posses great handle. She has no problem driving to the lane despite her size (5’4”) but that’s not where her game ends. Long also has a unique mid-range game: she hits shots all around the court and doesn’t really favor one spot over another. She also has a very consistent three-point shot. She doesn’t shoot it often but when she does there’s a 40% chance it will be good. Long is currently the top scorer in the Mountain Pass League. Oh, did I mention she is only a freshman? That’s right, this girl is dominating courts all around the valley and she is a true freshman. Just recently she came down to West Valley for the West Valley Varsity Tip-Off Classic and averaged 20 points per game.

Jada Long has put 120 points in the bank this season already. She doesn’t just lead the Mountain Pass League in overall points, she leads the Mountain Pass League in three-point shots made (17) and free throws made (29). She is also among the top three in the league in steals (23). The season is only beginning but this “hooper” is off to a fast start. There’s no sign of her slowing down either: defenses have a tough time containing her, and for good reason: she spends most of her free time training for basketball. It’s a year-round thing for her and she takes it very seriously.

Long trains through “Mo Buckets Training” a basketball training company based in Beaumont. Mo Buckets trains all ages and Jada is just one of their high school basketball players who is making waves this season. The main trainer is Mo Abdul-Aziz who trains her in all phases of the game. Mo doesn’t just teach his athletes how to shoot a basketball. He likes to discover what makes them good at basketball and helps enhance that part of their game. Not everyone is a natural scorer: some are defensive-minded players and others are facilitators. No matter what your game is, Mo Buckets Training can make you a better player.

Jada Long currently has her team right in the mix in the Mountain Pass League standings. They have a 4-6 record, but are getting better every day. The scary thing is the two leading scorers on the team, Jada Long and Jana Roman are both underclassmen which means we will be hearing a lot more of both of them in the near future. Follow @IEsportsConnect on Instagram for all the latest news on Jada Long and her Freshman Season.

Big games for the two local teams.

Round two of the playoffs start this week. There are only two teams standing in the Mountain Pass League. In our first game of the week Kaiser (out of Fontana) will take on San Jacinto. Kaiser comes into the game with a perfect regular season record of 10-0. They won their first round matchup last week against Redondo Union 16-3. Although Kaiser’s record looks impressive as well as their margin of victory, there is something to be said of their opponent’s and strength of schedule. They haven’t quite matched to another school with the same quality athletes that SJ has on their team. Kajiya Hollawayne (QB for SJ) is only a Junior and already has multiple D-1 offers. Other players that should be getting attention from colleges on the San Jacinto roster are; Sheldon Newton, Kameron Rocha, Juan Denny Jr, Antoine Sullivan, Damonce Williams, Keith Hunter, LJ Vaifanua. Kelvin Davis, and Nathan Ortiz. All of these players possess the ability to change the game at any given moment. Kaiser’s game is based on running the ball…their quarterback Trey Tribble is the leading rusher. They run a lot of RPO (Run-Pass Option) and Option Read, in their play book. Their passing game is very minimum Tribble only threw for 19 more yards (1163) than he rushed (1144) for the season. He has thrown 10 touchdowns and 4 interceptions on the year. Tribble is also the team leader in rushing touchdowns (13).

Bradley Fye will attempt to guide his team to a victory friday night.

Compare this to San Jacinto’s Kajiya Hollawayne who has twice as many passing yards and touchdowns against much tougher opponents. Hollawayne has 200 less rushing yards than Tribble, but has the same amount (13)of rushing touchdowns. Both teams possess the capability to score quickly. I expect this matchup to be tough for both offenses. We will see which team is able to impose their will against the other in order to advance into the next round.

Hemet will be welcoming El Rancho into the Dog Pound this week. This will be a tough matchup for Hemet. El Rancho is ranked in the top 200 (188) while Hemet is ranked 262. The good thing for Hemet is that the two schools will be competing with each other on their best sides of the ball. El Rancho’s game is through the air. Hemet’s strength? Pass Defense. Two of their defensive backs made the Hemet & San Jacinto Chronicle All-Valley team (Bradley Fye & Frankie Castillo): that doesn’t mean you can forget about the always exciting Jeremiah Graves. Graves has over 1500 passing yards and over 500 rushing yards on the season. He can get the job done when he needs too. His number one receiver, Ethan Leonard (over 800 yards and 10 touchdowns) will be ready to control the game.

Both teams are playing at home this week so go out and support them as they make bids to be CIF champions. Games start at 7:00 and tickets are $10.

(End of the Season Awards)

End of the Season Awards and Review for Local Girls’ Volleyball

The girls in the Mountain Pass League put on quite an exhibition this year. Unfortunately everyone’s season has come to an end in the CIF bracket tournament. Hemet High and Beaumont finished as Co-Champs of the Mountain Pass League, both posting an impressive 9-1 record in league play.

Each only lost to each other splitting their season matchups in half.

Hemet, Beaumont, and West Valley all made it into their divisions playoff bracket this season. Hemet was victorious in their first two matches against West and Calvary Chapel but fell in the third round to Saddleback Christian who lost in their Semi-Final matchup. Beaumont lost in their first match against Brentwood and was eliminated from the tournament quite early. Many expected them to make a deeper run in the bracket this season. West Valley won their first match in the playoffs against Patriot, but they turned lost the very next match against Cate.

Tahquitz, San Jacinto, and Citrus Hill all failed to make the playoffs this season. San Jacinto has a rather young team, only graduating 3 seniors at the end of the school year. They will be poised to challenge West Valley for the Mountain Pass League Championship next year. West Valley will be a little younger next year as they are graduating six seniors and only have three juniors listed on their current roster.

It is important to note that the current co-league champions, Hemet and Beaumont are leaving the league at the end of the season. Hemet’s team is graduating 4 seniors: that’s a third of their 12-girl active roster. It’s unknown how many seniors are on Beaumont’s roster, but both teams will want to assert themselves as top dogs in their new league next season.

The Hemet-San Jacinto Chronicle would like to congratulate the three teams on their playoff success. We are looking forward to seeing how they come back next year.

(One Common Goal)

Four Mountain Pass League Teams Are Represented In The CIF Playoffs This Year.

The regular season is over and the Playoffs are upon us. In our matchup of the week Apple Valley (9-1 Record) will be traveling down to San Jacinto to take on the Mountain Pass League Champions. The San Jacinto Tigers come into this game fresh off a dominant performance against Tahquitz. In general, the Tigers have dominated the entire league this year. Their last loss of the season came in week 4 against Eastlake who was a worthy opponent.

San Jacinto had a tough time in that game, missing quite a few key players on the defensive side of the ball and also missing one of their key playmakers on offense, senior wide-receiver Antoine Sullivan. Ever since that game they have been steam-rolling every opponent. Currently San Jacinto is ranked number 91 in the state, while their opponent Apple Valley is currently ranked 136.

The key for San Jacinto will be to contain sophomore quarterback Jayden Max Denegal who threw for over 2,000 yards, 33 touchdowns, and only 6 interceptions on the year. Apple Valley’s senior running back Kenyard Edwards is also going to be a threat he rushed for over 1,000 yards this season and has 19 touchdowns. The San Jacinto defensive line is going to be key in this matchup. Can Sheldon Newton and Mahe Hamala create enough pressure in the back field while the linebackers stay in pass coverage? I expect San Jacinto’s Defensive Back, Kameron Rocha to be playing the number one receiver for Apple Valley (Tyron Smith) all game long, in order to force Apple Valley to use another weapon. This match-up promises to be electric as both teams possess the ability to put up a lot of points in very little time.

Hemet High (6-4) will travel to El Monte to take on Arroyo. Hemet High finished the season ranked 256 in state, but was the first team this season to take out the previous league champs, Citrus Hill. Their opponent Arroyo finished the season with a .500 record, ranked 541 in the state.

This should be an easy game for Hemet as long as they can isolate Arroyo’s senior running back, Adrian Calvillo. Defense has really been Hemet’s backbone all year by forcing teams into dog fights and proving that they are the bullies. That’s the kind of game they like to play, and if they can force Arroyo into that, they should walk out of the first round as victors.

Beaumont (who finished the season with a 9-1 record, sole loss coming from San Jacinto in week 6) is entering the playoffs ranked 171 in state. They are in the same division as Hemet but they are on opposite sides of the bracket. This creates an interesting story-line: if both teams are able to make it all the way to the finals (Beaumont barely squeaked by Hemet in week 7, with a score of 14-10) Beaumont’s opponent is Linfield Christian who finished the regular season with a 7-3 record and ranked 411 in the state. Beaumont has to isolate junior quarterback Michael Harkins, who threw for over 1,000 yards, 17 touchdowns, with only 7 interceptions. Beaumont also has to worry about about the Linfield Christian running back Crispin Wong who ran for over 1,000 yards and 14 touchdowns this year. He had a season-long touchdown run of 98 yards. Hemet Native and former Hemet Saints Running Back Justin Manqueros is also a threat out of the back field for Linfield Christian: he ran for over 1,000 yards and chipped in 18 touchdowns this season.

Citrus Hill (finishing the season with a 7-3 record, with all 3 losses coming from league opponents, ranked 230 in state) will match up with Yorba Linda. Yorba Linda is ranked 61 in the state and finished the season with a 9-1 record. Yorba Linda’s offense relies on a “Run-By-Committee” approach, getting a lot of different players “touches” throughout the game. On paper this seems like an easy game for Yorba Linda. Citrus Hill needs to have the game of their life to take out this opponent which will be an amazing David and Goliath tale which would help save face for Citrus Hill which has had a very unusual season by their standards.

(Go Big or Go Home)

Go Big or Go Home: Who is making the playoffs after week 10?

The last week of the regular season is here and there are some big, exciting matchups. In the first matchup of the night, Tahquitz travels across town to San Jacinto to take on the Tigers. San Jacinto is coming fresh off an amazing performance against Citrus Hill in which they secured themselves as champions of the Mountain Pass League. This is San Jacinto’s last game before the playoffs: they will probably rest key players after they have a comfortable lead and try out some new things on the offense. For Tahquitz this game is merely for bragging rights, They will be trying to become the only team to take down the Tigers. There is another interesting narrative: Tigers deep threat and primary receiver Antoine Sullivan will be on the field. Sullivan was Tahquitz’s leading receiver for the last two years, but with uncertainty in their coaching staff, Sullivan’s family decided it would be a better move for Antoine to move over to San Jacinto’s program where Coach Galliano is notorious for running a well-organized football program.

This game will be interesting for Antoine: he will want to have the game of his life to prove that he made the right decision. He’ll also be playing against a lot of his former teammates (whom he considers family) in the matchup. San Jacinto is also celebrating their senior night, where over 20 seniors will be playing their last regular season game at Tiger stadium. It will be a game full of emotion and energy for the Tigers who are preparing for another deep playoff run this year.

West Valley will host Hemet in the final game of the season. This is also West Valley’s senior night. West Valley’s season is basically over already, posting a 2-7 record on the year. That said, they have one last chance to play spoiler to the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs have to win this game in order to make the playoffs and the more they dominate, the better for them. West Valley has a couple of players who are being recruited to play football at the next level and this will certainly be a prime opportunity for them to add to their resume. Hemet’s defense is no joke: it has anchored the team all season long.

Beaumont will travel to Citrus Hill. Beaumont has to win this game and pray for an upset at San Jacinto in order to be considered league champions together. That is a lot to ask: Citrus Hill’s defense is very good, even holding San Jacinto to only seven points in the first half. Beaumont’s defense is not quite as good, though they have a very high-power offense that can put up a lot of points in very little time. This game will be a fun one to watch. If Citrus Hill’s defense doesn’t hold up, and they lose this game, it may mark the end of a dominant era for Citrus, having lost to three out of five teams in the league.

(Mountain Pass League)

Bulldogs bully Titans, Cougars hunt down Mustangs in week 9

This is the second to final week before the regular season ends: everyone is gearing up for the playoffs. Unfortunately not everyone is going to get a chance to compete in the postseason: spots are limited. Hemet High pulled up to Tahquitz High School on Friday knowing that that had to win if they wanted to make the playoffs this season. Hemet was fresh off a loss to San Jacinto High, but San Jacinto plays in a much higher division than Hemet: and that is really the story of Hemet’s season; losses coming to opponents that are ranked much higher than they (Chaparral, J.W. North, Beaumont, & San Jacinto). Hemet High has a truly elite defense; they play fast and play hard, led by Senior safety Bradley Fye and Junior Cornerback Frankie Castillo. Together they lock down receivers and force teams to improvise.

Tahquitz has struggled on offense. They have had some coaching staff issues that they will hope to resolve when the season is over, but for now, they just have to get out of their league play. Unfortunately for them, four out of the five opponents in league are in much higher divisions, which makes it hard to make the playoffs in your own division. Hemet got started early in this game and never really let up: before Tahquitz even knew what was happening Hemet had a huge lead and they never let up. This game was a good old-fashioned butt-kicking by Hemet High. They needed to bounce back in a big way. Hemet went on to win 43-0 and increase their chances of a playoff berth.

Beaumont traveled down to West Valley last week. West Valley started off their season 2-0 and were riding a wave of confidence that was quickly derailed when they started to run into opponents like Temecula Valley & San Jacinto. They didn’t look like they would make much of a wave at all this season. Then suddenly they took on Citrus Hill and nearly squeaked out a victory (14-6). Citrus has been the top dog in the league for a long time, so to keep a game close and to lose it in only the final seconds was actually very impressive. All of a sudden there were talks going around wondering if West Valley would be able to pull off the upset against Beaumont. Unfortunately for the Mustangs, it was never even close. Beaumont jumped out to a huge lead and never let off the gas, winning the matchup 42-0, putting West Valley on a 6-game losing streak.

This was a huge week for Mountain Pass League teams: currently San Jacinto (4-0) sits in first place in the league. Beaumont (3-1) is in second place. Hemet (2-2) and Citrus Hill (2-2) are tied for third, although Hemet currently owns the tiebreaker between the two. Tahquitz (1-3) is currently in fifth place, and West Valley (0-4) is in last place in the league.

Tigers Remain On Top

Week 8 is in the books and the season is beginning to wind down. San Jacinto High School (SJHS) Dominated Hemet High in the Battle of the Bell last week, which resulted in some off-field nastiness (see our story a too-physical coach elsewhere in this edition), but what else happened around the League?

Beaumont traveled down to Hemet to play the Tahquitz Titans. Beaumont scored 55 points in the game and Tahquitz only posted 7. Beaumont’s starting quarterback Edward Mcculloch posted up 172 passing yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for one touchdown. Beaumont’s pair of running backs, Sadiq Randolph and Jonathan Solis ran for 131 yards and 4 touchdowns against Tahquitz. This was a great game for Beaumont who improves to 7-1 on the season and 2-1 against league opponents. Their only loss came from San Jacinto in week 6 of the season.

Citrus Hill also made the trip to Hemet, but they went to West Valley and took on the Mustangs. On paper, Citrus Hill should have put on a beating, but West Valley (WV) came out and made this game a dog fight. WV’s defense held together and shut down Citrus Hill offense: WV limited their offense to only 14 points, which is impressive considering Citrus has averaged over 30 points a game this season. West Valley showed that when they come together and play as a team they have what it takes to play with the big dogs. Unfortunately their offense struggled to gain any momentum and they couldn’t get on the scoreboard until the third quarter. West Valley also lost one of their key playmakers, Rueben Rivera to an injury, which didn’t help their offense.

At the end of this week, there’s no new shift in the standings. San Jacinto is still on top with a 6-2 record and is 3-0 against league opponents. Citrus Hill and Beaumont are tied for second/third place with 7-1 overall records and 2-1 in league play. Hemet and Tahquitz are tied for fourth/fifth place both have a 4-4 record but are only 1-2 in league. Finally West Valley is at the bottom of the pack with a 2-6 overall record and are currently 0-3 in league.

This was a great week for Mountain Pass League teams and the competition was stiff, as all the teams are eyeing a position in the playoffs.
