FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YEARS HEMET CITY COUNCIL EVALUATES A CITY MANAGER WITHOUT TERMINATING HIM
Tuesday night's Hemet City Council meeting presented quite a surprise to those of us who cover this twice-monthly event. In closed session, the Council evaluated the performance of City Manager Chris Lopez and came back into public session with a thumbs up on his performance which, for the first time in years, did not result in termination. We have attempted to contact Lopez for comment but have been unable to do so by press time.
Governor Newsom Signs Legislation to Ensure Access to Supplemental Paid Sick Leave for Workers Impacted by the Pandemic
Building on the state’s action to expand paid sick days protections for California’s workforce during the pandemic, Governor Gavin Newsom today signed SB 95, legislation to ensure access to up to 80 hours of COVID-19 supplemental paid sick leave for eligible employees, including those advised to quarantine or isolate and those caring for COVID-impacted family members.
Hot housing market fuels a rise in homeowners’ equity
The red-hot U.S. housing market is paying off for many homeowners, even those who aren’t looking to sell their home. On average, homes with a mortgage gained $26,300 in equity in the last three months of 2020 versus a year earlier, according to real estate information company CoreLogic. That average gain is the highest since 2013, the firm said. CoreLogic said homes with a mortgage account for about 62% of all U.S. properties. Taken together, the home equity for those properties surged to more than $1.5 trillion, an increase of 16.2% from a year earlier. T
California bill aims to jumpstart ‘microstamps’ on handguns
Gun control advocates are making a new attempt to force the gun industry to comply with California’s unique law requiring individual identifiers on all bullet casings, a mandate that has been toothless since it was approved in 2007. The law requires gun manufacturers to adopt micro-stamping technology on new types of handguns introduced in California.
Officials: Gun in supermarket shooting bought 6 days earlier
Police on Tuesday identified a 21-year-old man as the suspect who opened fire inside a crowded Colorado supermarket, and court documents showed that he purchased an assault rifle less than a week before the attack that killed 10 people, including a police officer. Supermarket employees told investigators that Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa shot an elderly man multiple times Monday outside the Boulder grocery store before going inside, according to the documents. Another person was found shot in a vehicle next to a car registered to suspect’s brother.
