On May 25, 2021, about 11:47 PM, deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Moreno Valley Station, responded to the report of a major injury traffic collision near the intersection of Iris Avenue and Camino Flores, in the city of Moreno Valley. As deputies arrived on-scene, a gold, 2005 Toyota Camry, was found fully engulfed in flames, with an unresponsive occupant inside the passenger compartment. Personnel from CalFire responded to the location and extinguished the fire; after which, the driver, and sole occupant of the Toyota, was determined to be deceased.
The Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station Traffic Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the location and assumed the investigation. Information obtained during the investigation revealed the Toyota was traveling westbound on Iris Avenue when it entered the intersection with Camino Flores against a red signal light. At the same time, a silver, 2006 BMW 325i was turning left from eastbound Iris Avenue towards northbound Camino Flores. As the BMW continued through the intersection, it struck the driver’s side of the Toyota, causing it to careen into a light pole and burst into flames. The driver of the BMW subsequently abandoned the vehicle in the roadway, and fled the area running northbound on Camino Flores, beyond the view of witnesses.
As the investigation continued, it was discovered the registered owner of the BMW was Jamal McCoy, 21-years-old, of Moreno Valley. Deputies responded to the home of McCoy where he was arrested and later booked into custody at the Riverside County Jail for felony hit and run. It was unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision; however, toxicology results are pending.
The identity of the deceased victim will not be released pending positive identification and notification to the next of kin.
