Gavin Newsom breaks silence on $800 billion proposal from California reparations task force

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) responded to the California Reparations Task Force $800 billion proposal on Tuesday, arguing that the issue was about “more than cash payments.” Newsom had been quiet on the task force’s proposals, which he had created back in 2020, in response to the fallout from the death of George Floyd. He broke his silence when he gave a statement to Fox News that praised the work of the task force.

HOW MUCH IN REPARATIONS ARE THE CALIFORNIA REPARATIONS TASK FORCE PROPOSING? The reparations task force voted on Saturday to approve a reparations model that is estimated to cost the state over $800 billion, just in monetary payments. “Dealing with that legacy [of slavery] is about much more than cash payments.

Many of the recommendations put forward by the Task Force are critical action items we’ve already been hard at work addressing: breaking down barriers to vote, bolstering resources to address hate, enacting sweeping law enforcement and justice reforms to build trust and safety, strengthening economic mobility — all while investing billions to root out disparities and improve equity in housing, education, healthcare, and well beyond.

This work must continue,” Newsom said in a statement to Fox News. “Following the Task Force’s submission of its final report this summer, I look forward to a continued partnership with the Legislature to advance systemic changes that ensure an inclusive and equitable future for all Californians,” he continued. The reparations plan includes a slew of suggestions that suggest revolutionary change across every aspect of society, but the aspect most focused on has been the massive monetary payments to black citizens.

Though the total price tag has not been approved by the state legislature, or Newsom himself, the latest proposal could see payments of up to $1.2 million sent to black residents. The new proposal aims to send payments on a structured system based on the amount of time spent in California, and the number of alleged harms committed against them.

If the $800 billion price tag is correct, it would represent over two times the entire state’s budget, as California struggles with a significant deficit.

  1. What about the Indians? They had a price on their heads. What about the Japanese who were incarcerated for no reason other than being Japanese. How about the dirt poor ‘okies’ who were treated like dirt. I understand slavery was horrible but I never had a slave nor did my family. How much time do we have to leave California, although born and raised here, before you start making us pay for all we didn’t do?

        • Amen. What about all the other groups of nationalities that have been wronged. What about the Germans that had to go up in to camps in the San Andreas area? And someone above said what about the Japanese for World War II. That is also when the Germans were rounded up so when does reparation stop? Does this mean we need to compensate every single person in our country because we all have been wronged at one point or another.

          • Wait a minute! How about the thousands of homeless. LA has 41000 + homeless alone. We need to build hundreds of tent ⛺ cities just like Auburn, CA did. A fenced in area with tents, bathrooms, showers, and food trucks , security guards and offer them help to get back on their feet. Forget about the few apts. That are being built. Our money needs to go a lot further. And special help for our veterans.!🇺🇸

          • YES a a WHITE Man & a descendant of slavery I want my share. For every African Slave Sold & arrived in the Colonies TWICE as Many WHITES were Sold Into Slavery in the South African regions & my ancestors suffered too!

      • The US govt paid the Japanese reparations for executive order 9066 (30k) and a formal apology (under Reagan). The govt directly stripped them of their property and money.

But for real, what about the natives? California committed a genocide against them, and there was far less opportunity for those left than there was for African Americans living in a state that opposed chatel slavery and endorsed it against the natives. Reparations like the ones proposed are not politically feasible, it’s mere theater.

    • The indians, jews (which was not our issue rather Gernany) Japanese and Italians were all paid and compensated for the injustices…yeah do your research…..blacks never received a dime nor the promise of 40 acres and a mule. .hmmmm wonder why??

    • I could be incorrect but the Japanese Ppl who got subjected to concentration camps received restitution. The Native Americans received alcoholism, small pox and some put on reservation and a few got casinos. IDK if it’s true but a person who was part native said that full blooded Native Amer get a regular pay out. Germany had to pay the Jews. America had to invest in rebuilding Japan after biking them twice. Black Ppl was promised reparations when freed. It was 40 acres of land + a mule. Those who went to collect it was met by the Klsn and others. So needless to say, it was a powerful deterrent. I have no clue how this will pan out. Money wise I don’t see this taking place. I doubt that white wealth will be taken away.

    • Very true. Maybe my family should go back to Poland even we love this country. By the way the Polish helped Haiti to get theirs freedom from the French and the Polish are the only foreigners that are considered to be Haitianos and can buy land in Haiti. No Easter Europeans in their right mind never would promote slavery. I really believe this country can move forward and not to make slavery a perpetual problem for us or have a second civil war because of it.

      • It’s not a perpetual problem. Slavery is illegal in the United States. Lots of caucasian Americans gave thier lives to win that freedom.

    • Great point! California history is chock-full of people groups that were oppressed. When do they receive reparations? Native American should be at the top of that list!

    • Amen. I 1000% support money for Native community. This is ridiculous and this Californian is is tired of paying more taxes for this kind of stuff. One of the many many reason I can’t wait to leave. You are driving hard working tax paying citizens away. At some point this state will no longer be able to sustain itself. With the collapse of the large banks it seems like a stupid time to throw money around. This is my home, lived here my entire life, but its too hard to live here and thrive anymore. It makes me so sad!

    • We all owe the Native Americans..As for the Japanese..Bill Clinton gave all who were held in camps money to their families Realistically Ca can’t afford what their plan states..

  2. You can make life better for everyone. The poor has an injustice as well. Make it right for the very poor in California. The poor, black and anything but white skinned are criminalized for other wise being human. Kim

    • This isn’t about the poor its about the injustices done by the government to its black residents and the reparations that were promised to them…stay on topic please

    • As a Californian taxpaying resident, this is a short fix. It will not solve a long-term issue, which is systemic racism. Instead of giving away lollipops (money), reinvest them into something that could guarantee incomes to them and develop a revenue for state of California. For instance, you could give away 20% down for homeowner payments for them because they will have to pay property taxes, which return to State of California. This kind of eco-system will work successfully. If we give them cash, its no guarantee that they will return to the State. We are then even deeper in debts. We also have to take accounts of other racial groups that also suffered deep level of racial discriminations and slavery.

  3. Check out my facebook post and comment “Our world is our planet. Are we concerned about our people?;” view the video.
Tell me if Reparation would be better, directed towards global investing and support for the Africa Union!

  4. I truly DO NOT understand any of this. I grew up in suburbia upper middle class and I don’t know what it’s like to be a black American in an inner city. But I don’t see any reason to put this state or this country any deeper into deficit then we already are! Nobody that will be receiving this money knows anyone that was a slave, and will use this money for anything good. Maybe that’s an ignorant statement? But real talk what do you think is going to happen? That they will all a sudden turn their lives around and invest wisely, start a company, donate even a penny? Fuck no! All of a sudden we are going to have a shit ton of rich thugs that cam now afford the good guns, and flood the dope community! S I guess I was wrong , I do see them investing lol hahaha holy shit I’m very curious how all of this pans out! But all jokes aside, I do hope that some of them do turn their lives around and do something positive with this money! I hope they know that they will be under a huge microscope and I hope they prove everyone wrong! Well see??

    • Wow!
      I’m African American
Didn’t realize I was any of those things you mention. I won’t even ask where you get all of that nonsense from.

      I do know this.
If you or your family is owed something for work performed, they would want and expect to be paid. People in this country, whose family worked and attain wealth pass past that wealth, down to their children, and their children, and their children. I’m not sure why it’s so hard for people to understand that concept when it comes to Black people. There were several hundred years of slavery. Years! There is something owed by this country (our founding fathers who took part in slavery) to African-American families who endured slavery. I’m not sure how you fix it. All I can say is I am not looking for a handout, or anything like that but if my great great great great grandparents have money at that time for the work that they performed to help build this country, they would have passed that money down to those before me and me , it’s really not hard to understand except, apparently when it involves black people, and by the way, Michael, never done a drug in my life never been a thug. I’ve owned businesses, still do own a business ive worked in Silicon Valley for 30 years so you should be more specific when you’re talking about an entire group of people. I take exception to pretty much everything you said there .

  5. Just do what is fair, that’s better than nothing at all, what if things were the other way around that slavery and all included along with being dehumanized happened to other races ?
Would this act be okay ??

  6. California never had slaves.
If we’re just going to give it away, let’s give every born in California Mexican American a payoff for being harassed about being an illegal, a wetback and being told to go back where they come from. Now that has been a nasty California problem for decades. Where will it end?

  7. If a man can be a woman and a woman can be a man can a white be a black? And how about the descendent of white soldiers who were killed or wounded during the civil war. There are many great black Americans that took advantage of being in America then there are those who are looking for a free handout.

  8. Perhaps reparations for African Americans who are descendents of those who were enslaved in California. While we are at it we need to include descendents of the Native Americans in California that were forced from their land. Personally I think that giving 1.2 million dollars is only going to bring out the worst in many who receive it. It’s going to make things much much worse. Wait till they find out what kind of tax bracket that puts them into. I am a 1st generation American. My parents came through Ellis Island as children with nothing and had to deal with all of the bias White America had to offer. It wasn’t easy for anyone. I think there is a major difference between those weened on hard work and those weened on handouts. It’s time for me to leave the state I was born in. I am ashamed for my country. Newsom you are a fricken disgrace!!
Your family must be proud of you, you are just like them.

  9. If this passes i wii never pay another dime in taxes to the state of California. How about reparations for soldiers? I was a slave for the USMC and forced to fight in Vietnam. As opposed to historic slaves, I was a modern day slave and put my life on the line daily.

  10. And wait til the slave descendants try to prove they are a descendant..they are facing the same thing we Natives have faced..Show me your papers.Prove you are a Native.there is no other nation in all the world where their indigenous have to provide proof .I come from several California tribes that the agents didn’t get around to acknowledge becuz they ran out of money before they got around to our tribes. Why weren’t we taken care of first ?

  11. There is enough documentation so that those who were slaves can sue those families who were slave owners. I support this totally. But, hell no to California paying reparations. California was never a slave state, and my Mexican American family was also discriminated even though they were here since 1900 and my dad and uncles fought in WII. I support money being invested in kids in poor neighborhoods through education and after school programs for ALL children regardless of race or religion.

  12. We ere inslaved 500 years. I don’t think anyone suffered mor than black. It’s our time now everyone is hating. Black people deserve a monetary payment. We are still suffering fro ignorance. We are still the most discriminated race in all Continents. So back off.

  13. They just need to give everyone in California 2 million dollars because California has their hands in everyone’s pockets from gas to pork and eggs… What is wrong with this it’s gonna start an all out war!!!

  14. Grabbing Newscum is the biggest dueshebag that’s ever walked the planet and worst governor in history. Record crime record homeless worst test scores in the nation highest taxes free handouts to everyone except California and American taxpayers. He’s totally full of sh__!

  15. It’s a fact that black citizens have been suppressed. It’s not important whether by bigotry or ignorance, or accident.
I paid a price for being a white male throughout the Affirmative Action experiment. My career in government was derailed because of it. My only source of bitterness is that it was a failed experiment.
The black community would be better served with free education, quality healthcare, tax deductions and more importantly, mentorship. Guidance. A picture of the opportunity that’s available to them.
The United States didn’t have slavery, the Confederacy did. The United States defeated them with a tremendous sacrifice. My ancestors fought for the North.
Give the gift of knowledge and hope. It’s the same as gifting fish, or teaching one to fish.
    WWJD? 🙏

  16. Every group that was wronged received reparations except African American. Why? Now we want to remedied? Bay the same time many oppose it. Again why? If this nation can give billions away to other nations I see no reason to right a historical wrong. And please don’t say, “blacks had affirmative action.” That is a lie because the group that profited from it was white females and that proven by many studies.
