Details:

On April 14, 2022, deputies assigned to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department– Smith Correctional Facility located an adult male inside a housing unit in need of medical attention. Medical staff at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility (SCF) determined the inmate needed to be transported to a local hospital for treatment. American Medical Response (AMR) personnel transported the inmate to a local hospital. He remained at the hospital and passed away on May 1, 2022.

Investigators from the Corrections Intelligence Bureau and the Coroner’s Bureau responded and assumed the investigation. The inmate’s identity will not be released at this time, pending notification to the family. There are no signs of foul play, and due to the ongoing status of the investigation, no further information is currently available. Kohler booked on murder, hit-run death after Palm Avenue scooter crash

Mason Drew Kohler, 31, was booked on felony murder, hit-and-run death, and DUI charges, according to the Riverside County jail roster, which lists a Hemet PD arrest at Palm Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue. Hemet police say two pedestrians on an electric scooter were struck there about 6:55 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22; one was pronounced dead. Police have not named the driver, and the decedent's identity remains withheld.
