Last year’s annual Soboba Braves’ hosted basketball tournament was played just prior to the COVID-19 pandemic that shut down sports for many months. This year, the 8th annual tournament was bigger and better than ever with 17 teams competing during three days of play, July 9 through 11.

Offering its all-time highest payouts gave players even more incentive to do their best on the courts at San Jacinto High School and the Soboba Sports Complex during the double elimination competition, meaning some teams could play up to eight games during the weekend. The Soboba Braves Summer Shootout was an open basketball tournament.

Charlotte Boniface helps her sons with the tournament each year. The Soboba Braves have been together about 11 years, having played basketball together since high school. They travelled to many tournaments throughout the west before deciding to host their own all-Native and open tournaments.

This year’s Soboba Braves team members were Javier Sandoval, Freddie Boniface, Nicolas Resvaloso, David Reyna, Trey Track and Nathaniel Moore.

Photos courtesy of the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians Diezels Dudes ended the weekend-long Soboba Braves Summer Shootout open basketball tournament with a second-place finish.

“Basketball is my favorite sport and I like the fast pace of it; it never gets boring because there’s always room for improvement,” Sandoval said. “I am a guard on the team and more of a role player, doing whatever the team needs with me.”

The team sported new uniforms this year designed by Sandoval and Freddie Boniface with a memorial patch in honor of Freddie’s girlfriend, Solie Rubio, who passed away.

“Solie was our number one fan and at every game,” Sandoval said. “We all love you, Sol, and miss your loud energy in the stands.”

Charlotte Boniface hosts fundraisers throughout the year and operates a snack bar during the tournaments with the help of many friends and family members and saying “My family is awesome – I have at least 10 aunts and cousins helping me with the snack bar.”

This year’s $7,000 payout to the first-place team was made possible through registration fees. Gifts for second- and third-place teams and referees’ costs were paid through fundraising efforts. They also received a sponsorship from the Soboba Foundation that helped with the cost of renting the San Jacinto High School gym for several games.

Photos courtesy of the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians The Plainzmen finished third out of 17 teams that competed at the Soboba Braves Summer Shootout open basketball tournament, July 9-11.

“We are thankful to the high school for letting us use their court; the Tribe has a good relationship with the school and the district,” Charlotte said. “We also appreciate the donations and assistance we got from the Boniface, Lindsey, Herrera and Morillo families, as well as the Foundation and Soboba Casino Resort.”

Charlotte said the team waited until January to see if pandemic restrictions might be lifted in time to have a summer tournament. She took care of all the contacts with Soboba Casino Resort for those that would be staying at the hotel, as well as others that needed to be notified. The tournament flyer went out in early May. Sandoval said, “The Soboba Braves would also like to thank Ricardo Macias, Michael Durrett and the families for their help with this year’s tournament and we are sorry if we forgot to mention anyone.”

Travelling from areas such as Northern California, Arizona, Nevada and throughout Southern California, teams arrived eager to get back in the game they had not been able to play for so long. Many of the teams were formed shortly before the tournament.

Team Hostile captain Tyler Crowl of Shurz, Nevada, said this was the first time his entire eight-member team had been able to play together at an inside court in more than a year.

“The 2020 Soboba tournament was our last tournament,” he said. “We practiced on a lot of outdoor courts, but we’ve only been able to get time in a couple of open games at gyms, just in time for this event.”

Malik Foxworth of Hemet was captain of the Free Agents, aptly named because players were randomly picked from individuals who wanted to play but didn’t already have a team. He said you just play the game and learn about each other as you go along with the flow. He said the positions were determined based on height, with the tallest playing center.

“I’ve been doing this tournament for years,” Foxworth said, adding that he was part of the third-place team in last year’s All-Native +1 shootout tournament.

Photos courtesy of the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians Several games of the Soboba Braves Summer Shootout open basketball tournament were played at San Jacinto High School.

Playing their first game at San Jacinto High School, the team was headed to the Soboba Sports Complex to go head-to-head with the Bandits just a couple hours later.

Getting ready for their second game of the day at the sports complex gym was the team Non Rated, from Northern California. Only five of the players were able to make it to the tournament but team member Gino Pena was determined to make the best of the day.

“Basketball brought us here – we usually go to all-Native tournaments, but this is our first open one,” he said. “We tried to put a team together real quick but half the team couldn’t make it so we just came with what we had.” The Dry Creek Warriors, also from Northern California, was led by Capt. Robby Burroughs who played guard. By noon, they already had one win under their belts and were looking forward to their next turn on the court.

“Some of us have played together on different teams but we came together for this at the last minute,” he said. “I’ve been here about four or five times before. There are usually about two or three teams that are real good competition. We get a lot of support from everyone here.”

Burroughs said the past year has been difficult because of lack of practice due to the pandemic but felt if they just focused on defense, they could do well and continue to score.

“We’ve got to play harder and smarter at our next game,” he said about the 3 p.m. match-up.

Derreck Brooks and Camyn Boone with Supreme Black Leather, out of Arizona, said the team was playing in honor of one of their friends, Talib, who brought the team to past Soboba tournaments.

“He was like a big brother to some of us; he passed away two years ago,” Boone said.

Photos courtesy of the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians First-place team, Supreme Black Leather, played against A2R Elite during one of the early games of the Soboba Braves Summer Shootout open basketball tournament at the Soboba Sports Complex, held July 9-11.

A2R Elite team captain Aaron Alston, of Hesperia, said his players were from throughout LA County and the Inland Empire. They knew each other but this was their first time playing as a team.

“We came out a little rusty in our first game, but we plan to intensify our communication in the next game,” he said. “This is my first time here and I like it – it’s nice.”

Teams were also filmed for part of a documentary project called “War Party” by Warlance Foster of the Navajo Nation, who is trying to give exposure to talented Native American players that are often overlooked by professional sports teams and not being given the same opportunities as other athletes.

“Before things can happen, you need to build a foundation of support where everyone has the same goal and mission,” Foster said. “We are very thankful we could come here to showcase what can be done. Some reservations don’t have many resources or opportunities to be successful.”

Seattle documentary filmmaker Nils Cowan had a small production team at the games for an initial shoot. He said the vision for the film is to document Warlance and his brother Mniluzahe’s efforts to assemble an all-Indigenous professional basketball team and showcase the incredibly high level of talent around the country while competing and raising further awareness.

Foster said these types of events utilize the “warrior spirit” that he says has been broken over time. He hopes this documentary will help other strong Indian men build back the self-confidence needed to be successful, especially in professional sports.

This year’s first place team was Supreme Black Leather (AZ), winners of $7,000 and bragging rights; second place went to Diezels Dudes (CA), who received tournament backpacks; and, placing third were the Plainzmen (ND/SD), who won tournament jackets.

Jock Perry scored 21 points, Arinze Chidom had eight points and 12 rebounds and UC Riverside beat Washington 57-42 on Tuesday for coach Mike Magpayo’s first victory with the Highlanders.

UC Riverside led by as many as 13 points in the second haft, but Washington cut it to 44-38 with 9:03 remaining. That would be Washington’s final basket as the Huskies missed their final 12 shots down the stretch.

Magpayo missed UC Riverside’s opening loss to Pacific last Wednesday after flying back to southern California to be with his wife for the birth of their child. Magpayo, who is the first Division I men’s coach of Asian descent, was named the head coach in July after David Patrick accepted a coaching position at Arkansas.

Washington, which last led at 3-2, finished 16 of 52 (29.6%) from the field and was outrebounded 49-33 by the Highlanders of the Big West Conference.

Zion Pullin added nine rebounds and nine assists for UC Riverside (1-1). Perry was 9 of 15 from the field and Chidom 4 for 13.

Perry had 14 points in the first half on 7-of-10 shooting and Pullin had four points, six rebounds and seven assists as UC Riverside led 29-22 after forcing nine turnovers and not allowing an offensive rebound.

Quade Green scored 18 points for Washington (0-2), which returned just 35% of its scoring from last season and was picked by the media to finish ninth in the Pac-12. Hameir Wright had seven points, six rebounds and four steals, but he was just 1 of 10 from 3-point range.

It was a last-minute addition to the schedule for both teams. Washington lost to No. 2 Baylor on Sunday, and opted to stay in Las Vegas before its scheduled Pac-12 opener on Thursday at Utah. UC Riverside’s scheduled game against Fresno State on Monday was canceled do to a positive COVID-19 test within the Bulldogs program.

(Season Ends in Sweet 16)

The MSJC women’s basketball team saw their 26 game winning streak and 2019-20 season come to an end on Saturday, March 7th, 2020, night as they lost in the CCCAA Southern California Regional Finals at Mt. San Antonio 48-40.

The Eagles struggled all night offensively and fell behind 16-6 after the first quarter. Despite playing some great defense of their own the rest of the way, and controlling the glass in the evening, MSJC just made too many mistakes down the stretch to overtake the Mounties. Midway through the fourth period, it looked like the Eagles were poised to catch the Mounties when Mariah Sanchez hit a three-point shot to cut the lead to 38-35 off of a nice assist from Deja Blue. Haylei Janssens would again get the Eagles within 3 with 3:46 to play in the game when she made a jump shot to make the score 40-37 in favor of Mt. SAC. MSJC then committed a flurry of turnovers and missed a couple key shots down the stretch that could have tightened the game even more. Late free throws by the Mounties put the game out of reach.

Blue led the struggling Eagle offense with 15 points; she was the only MSJC player to reach double figures in scoring. She also had 9 rebounds and 3 assists in the loss. De’Adra Ross played her final game in an Eagle uniform and dominated the backboard as she pulled in a game-high 24 rebounds to go along with 7 points as MSJC outrebounded the Mounties 55-36. Janya Smith came off the bench to add 7 for the Eagles. In the end, both teams shot the ball poorly with MSJC finishing the night 14 of 58 from the field while the Mounties were just 13 of 56. The difference turned out to be turnovers as the Eagles committed 28 of them in the game, including 17 in the second half, while the Mounties ended the night with just 15.

The loss ended a school-record 26 game win streak for MSJC; they had not lost a game since November 8th. The Eagles finish the season with an overall mark of 27-3, they went unbeaten in the Inland Empire Athletic Conference and claimed their third straight conference championship. MSJC was making their 14th consecutive appearance in the postseason and have reached at least the State’s Sweet 16 in five straight seasons. The Eagles only three losses of the season were all to teams that reached the State Final Eight.

(Eagle Women Win 25th Straight)

Who is King of the Court in the Mountain Pass League

The first week of league play is over. Let’s take a look at how the games went and who is sitting on top of the division currently. The West Valley Mustangs have been somewhat of a disappointment after an electric start. In their first league game, they fell to Tahquitz. This game was supposed to be West Valley’s to win as, before this, Tahquitz only had one win. Unfortunately West Valley came out flat in the second half and Tahquitz was able to steal the lead. West Valley would do their best to come back but their efforts would be in vain. Tahquitz would beat them 70-65. Two days later the Mustangs traveled to San Jacinto high school to play against the Tigers. West Valley wasn’t prepared for San Jacinto’s Jorden Hudson to have the game of his life. It didn’t matter what West Valley did they couldn’t keep up with Hudson who finished the game with 22 points and was 7 for 7 from the 3-point line. West Valley fell in this matchup 64-79 and now they are 0-2 in the league.

After beating West Valley, Tahquitz traveled to play Citrus Hill. It would be tough for Tahquitz to match Citrus Hill’s pace of play in that game and they would fall to the Hawks 83-40. Tahquitz is now 1-1 in the league. In their second game of league play, San Jacinto journeyed up the hill to play Beaumont. Beaumont controlled the first four quarters of the game leading San Jacinto by 10 points in the beginning of the fourth quarter. San Jacinto would have a huge quarter, scoring 22 points. Antoine Sullivan hit a last-second deep three-point shot to force the game to go over time. Neither team would deal the final dagger though. The game would eventually go to a second overtime where Beaumont would outscore San Jacinto and take the lead. The game finished with a score of 72-76 in favor of Beaumont. The Tigers are in the middle of the pack with a 1-1 record in the league.

Perhaps Hemet had the toughest schedule to start out the league season. They had to play back to back games against Beaumont and Citrus Hill. The two top dogs of the league. Hemet would give both schools a run for their money. Playing aggressively and with great energy. Even though they would go on to lose both games. The final score of the Citrus Hill game was 65-53 and the final score of the Beaumont game was 58-43. Hemet now has a 0-2 league record.

The current Mountain Pass League boys basketball standings are 1.Citrus Hill 2.Beaumont 3.San Jacinto 4.Tahquitz 5.Hemet 6.West Valley.

(Basketball Update)

Who are the Queens of the Mountain Pass League?

In the girl’s Mountain Pass League Division Hemet High is sitting on top with an 2-0 record, with two decisive victories over Citrus Hill and Beaumont. The Hemet Bulldogs have built a team that focuses on defense. They pride themselves on forcing teams into low-scoring games and in league play it seems to be working well so far. The Lady-Dogs held both Citrus Hill and Beaumont to 29 points in their matchups. If the Bulldogs keep playing like that they will certainly be in the mix for the league championship. Right now the Bulldogs have scored the most overall points in the league and they are knocking on the 1,000 point door. They are sitting with 945 points scored.

The Tahquitz Titans are currently in second place in the league. These girls have been playing their hearts out. Even though their overall record is 4-10, their league record is 2-0 with wins over West Valley and Citrus Hill. Their next two games against Beaumont and Hemet will be real tests for them to see where they stand amongst the competition in the division. The team is being led by Charleen Garnett and her scoring consistency. She is one of the better pure shooters in the league and the league’s fourth-leading scorer. Right now Garnett is averaging 50% from the field. She will look to continue her streak into the coming weeks before playoffs start.

Beaumont is struggling a little bit right now, even though they have two of the top five leading scorers in the league on their team. They have a 1-1 record in the league. They started out with a win against San Jacinto, but lost to Hemet. The Cougars have shown inconsistently at times this season and seem to play their best when their leading lady Jada Long has the ball. When Jada Long is hitting her shots and running a “Pick n Roll” concept with her low post threat Jana Roman, the team is hard to stop. Long is the leading scorer of the league at the moment averaging 16 points per game and Jana Roman is averaging 11 points per game. The two of them are a force when in sync and the Cougars coach needs to get them working on the same page as the season continues.

Even though San Jacinto lost to Beaumont they turned around and beat West Valley. San Jacinto is in the middle of the pack right now but their main lady Jayme Mejia has looked really dominate times this season. She is the second-highest leading scorer averaging 11.8 points per game. Her highest scoring game this season was against Jurupa Valley where she put in 20 points. Mejia is shooting at 62% at the moment and playing really great basketball.

Citrus Hill’s Kealani Waters has been playing amazing basketball. Averaging 11.2 points per game and trying everything she can to keep her team in it. Unfortunately, Citrus Hill is struggling to click as a unit. They have an 0-2 record in the league and it hasn’t really been close. West Valley isn’t in a much better spot, they started off looking promising but have been flat in the league play part of the season. West Valley also has a 0-2 record, but one of these teams will get a win in their next match up as they are set to face each other.

Keeping Defenses Around So-Cal On Their Toes

Jada Long of Beaumont High School is already making a case for herself to be named the top player in the Mountain Pass League. She is a natural scorer who posses great handle. She has no problem driving to the lane despite her size (5’4”) but that’s not where her game ends. Long also has a unique mid-range game: she hits shots all around the court and doesn’t really favor one spot over another. She also has a very consistent three-point shot. She doesn’t shoot it often but when she does there’s a 40% chance it will be good. Long is currently the top scorer in the Mountain Pass League. Oh, did I mention she is only a freshman? That’s right, this girl is dominating courts all around the valley and she is a true freshman. Just recently she came down to West Valley for the West Valley Varsity Tip-Off Classic and averaged 20 points per game.

Jada Long has put 120 points in the bank this season already. She doesn’t just lead the Mountain Pass League in overall points, she leads the Mountain Pass League in three-point shots made (17) and free throws made (29). She is also among the top three in the league in steals (23). The season is only beginning but this “hooper” is off to a fast start. There’s no sign of her slowing down either: defenses have a tough time containing her, and for good reason: she spends most of her free time training for basketball. It’s a year-round thing for her and she takes it very seriously.

Long trains through “Mo Buckets Training” a basketball training company based in Beaumont. Mo Buckets trains all ages and Jada is just one of their high school basketball players who is making waves this season. The main trainer is Mo Abdul-Aziz who trains her in all phases of the game. Mo doesn’t just teach his athletes how to shoot a basketball. He likes to discover what makes them good at basketball and helps enhance that part of their game. Not everyone is a natural scorer: some are defensive-minded players and others are facilitators. No matter what your game is, Mo Buckets Training can make you a better player.

Jada Long currently has her team right in the mix in the Mountain Pass League standings. They have a 4-6 record, but are getting better every day. The scary thing is the two leading scorers on the team, Jada Long and Jana Roman are both underclassmen which means we will be hearing a lot more of both of them in the near future. Follow @IEsportsConnect on Instagram for all the latest news on Jada Long and her Freshman Season.

Dartmouth Sixth Grader Can Hoop

(Ethan Saenz)

Ethan Saenz, a local middle schooler (just started sixth grade at Dartmouth) was named to the Junior Drew League All-Star team and competed this past weekend against the best basketball players in California (in his age bracket.) What is the Drew League? The Drew League is a summer invitational basketball tournament sponsored by Nike. The competition is intense there, NBA players play in the league occasionally with former Division One basketball players, Streetball Legends, and amateurs hoping to make a name for themselves. It isn’t just your random league. This year included players like Lamelo Ball and Nick Young. In the past, Kobe Bryant, James Harden, and Kevin Durant used the Drew League to help train in the offseason.

Ethan with his coach and mom before the All-Star game

To go along with the Drew League, Nike hosts a four-week basketball skills camp called the Junior Drew League. Here players are taught shooting, passing, and dribbling techniques as well as how to play as a team, but they are also evaluated during the camp and at the end, the best players are selected to be a part of the All-Star team that plays before the Championship game of the adult league.

Ethan Saenz put Hemet on his back, and proved that there is just as much talent out here as there is in Los Angeles, turning ankles with his impressive ball-handling and breaking necks with his fancy passes. Throughout the camp, he impressed coaches and became a sure-fire pick to the All-Star team. The All-Star game is tricky because the chemistry isn’t there, so teams don’t play to their full potential, but just days before the All-Star game Ethan Saenz banked in 40 points in a Travel ball tournament.

Ethan Saenz with Frank Nitty a Drew League Legend

Ethan plays basketball for Obsessed Basketball out of Moreno Valley. He is the point guard on the 11u (eleven and under) team. His coach is Ulande Washington out of Moreno Valley and has been coaching basketball for eight years. Ulande’s main goal is to help kids get through high school and into college by teaching them hard work, dedication, and commitment. He preaches to his athletes that education is just as important as sports and helps them be the best they can in both. He coaches kids from six years old all the way up to high school athletes and can be reached on Instagram at ObsessedHoops. Ethan has been with Obsessed basketball for two years but has been hooping since he was four years old. He comes from a big family but is being raised by a single mother who is his biggest fan and supporter. His best friend is his teammate/little brother Cameron Saenz, the two are constantly together, and you can always see them playing one on one at the courts.

Ethan spends his free time playing Fortnite, but basketball is where his true passion is at. He hopes to impress scouts enough to earn himself a Full-Ride Scholarship and will continue to play basketball until he physically can’t anymore. Follow Ethan on Instagram at Emoney07_ to watch his journey to the NBA as its happening. Be one of the first to jump on his hype train and show some support for one of our community youths who is making waves amongst the competition.

Time To Get Back To Work

(Big Joe Burton)

Former West-Valley Mustang finds a new home in France, previously Burton said he was waiting for a new contract offer, and the news had been quiet. He was confident that he would continue to play basketball overseas but was patiently waiting for his next opportunity. Joseph Burton played his college basketball at Oregon State and has spent the last few years traveling across Europe and Asia playing basketball and dominating the competition. We now know where he will be playing basketball for at least the next season, and that will be in France as the center of the Chorale Roanne basketball club. Chorale Roanne is a part of the LNB Pro A division and plays at the Halle Andre Vacheresse arena which holds over 5,000 seats. The club won two championships in its history one in 1959 and the other in 2007, it’s been 13 years since they have tasted the gold and the club hopes bringing Burton on board brings them a dominant force down low to anchor their team.

Joseph Burton joins four other Americans on the roster and six french natives. The head coach is Laurent Pluvy; not much information is known about him. It looks like Joseph Burton will be competing with Johndre Jefferson, a former University of South Carolina center. Johndre has been playing basketball overseas for about seven years after not being drafted to the NBA in 2012. Joseph and Johndre may compete for the starting job unless the coach wants to play big and let Burton play the Power-Forward and Jefferson play center. There is also Ferdinand Prenom on the roster who plays center as well. Ferdinand Prenom is a French native who has been playing professional ball since 2008. He also went undrafted in 2013. The three of them make up the three-headed monster defending the key for Chorale Roanne Basketball Club this upcoming season.

This is an excellent opportunity for Joseph, who wants to continue his playing career for as long as possible. He will be missing his wife and kids, while he is away but he is doing it for them. Usually, they will travel with him, but since this is a new place and his wife is ready to have their next baby any day it is best that they stay home while Burton goes overseas.

Burton is easily one of the most successful athletes that have come out of the valley and continues to represent the San Jacinto Valley/his Tribe as he travels the world playing basketball. Joseph spent most of the offseason working out and staying in shape, even putting in work at the local La Fitness courts. Follow Chorale Roanne on Facebook or Joseph Burton for updates on how his season is coming along.

Registration Ending Soon

Valley-Wide

It may not feel like it outside, but Fall is almost here. That means A whole new batch of sports to play at Valley-Wide, as summer is coming to an end so is basketball at Valley-Wide’s gyms which means it is time for Co-ed Volleyball to take over, registration ends September 25th which means there is a little over a month to turn those packets in. Valley-Wide offers multiple age divisions to for volleyball. Division 1 is for 3rd-5th grade, Division 2 is from 6th-8th grade, and Division 3 is for 9th-12th graders. After registration, each child will be informed of a skills day they will show up to let coaches see their skill level and abilities. Coaches will then perform a draft to select players on their team. This format is to ensure that talent is equally distributed throughout the league. However, you can still make special requests to be on a certain coaches’ team or paired up with another player. Valley-Wide isn’t always able to accommodate these requests but they do pride themselves on trying. If you are interested in signing your child up to play volleyball this season there isn’t much time left.

Football season is here, which means Flag Football at Valley-Wide has arrived as well, right now they are accepting registration packets for the three divisions they have set up this season, but be fast the deadline is Sept.18 which is only a month away. Division 1 is for 3rd & 4th graders; unfortunately, that is the lowest they go this season. Division 2 is for 5th & 6th graders, and Division 3 is for 7th & 8th graders. I’m a firm believer that many of the skills needed to play tackle football can be learned playing flag, and it minimizes the contact and injury potential a kid may face when playing tackle football too early.

There will be a skills day for all three divisions so athletes can show off their skills for all the coaches to see. This helps prevent coaches from stockpiling all of the good players on one team. Athletes should be prepared to put in work and impress the coaches at the skills day that way they can be a high draft pick. This is also an excellent place to play if your child didn’t make the middle school flag football team and still wants to play this season.

All registration packets & coaching packets can be picked up at the regional office on Esplanade Ave (901 W Esplanade Ave, San Jacinto, CA 92582) if you would like more information, please call Valley-Wide (951) 654-1505. As always Valley-Wide offers a scholarship program for kids who may not be able to afford registration fees. If you fall under that category, go into the office to get more information.
