Los Angeles County surpassed 10,000 deaths from the coronavirus Wednesday as California also hit a record high number of fatalities. The governor also announced the first detected case of the new and apparently more contagious variant of the coronavirus in a San Diego man.
Deaths from COVID-19 in the U.S. have soared to more than 2,200 a day on average, matching the frightening peak reached last April, and cases per day have eclipsed 200,000 on average for the first time on record, with the crisis all but certain to get worse because of the fallout from Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's.

Mason Drew Kohler, 31, was booked on felony murder, hit-and-run death, and DUI charges, according to the Riverside County jail roster, which lists a Hemet PD arrest at Palm Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue. Hemet police say two pedestrians on an electric scooter were struck there about 6:55 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22; one was pronounced dead. Police have not named the driver, and the decedent's identity remains withheld.
The San Jacinto Planning Commission voted 3-0 Tuesday to recommend two sphere-of-influence annexations to the City Council, including Tentative Tract Map 34271 for 151 single-family lots south of Ramona Expressway. Neither file is a completed annexation.
