A person in California who had been vaccinated against COVID-19 became the first in the U.S. to have an identified case of the omicron variant, the White House announced Wednesday as scientists continue to study the risks posed by the new virus strain.

On November 28, 2021, Benjamin Winkle was located in Northern California and arrested by the Placer County Sheriff’s Department. Winkle was arrested for unrelated new charges and the arrest warrant stemming from this homicide investigation. Winkle is currently in custody at the Placer County Jail and will eventually be extradited to Riverside County for the murder charge.

The suspects in the murder of George Torres have been identified as 23-year-old Edgar Ortega-Sanchez and 18-year-old Bryan Ortega. The suspects are brothers and residents of Perris. They have been arrested and booked into custody. The case has been submitted to the Riverside County District Attorney’s office, and murder charges have been filed.

About three-quarters of the Southern California shoreline being combed for tar following an offshore oil spill have been signed off as cleaned, officials said Tuesday.
