Wildfire evacuees fill Lake Tahoe roads in rush to flee

A popular vacation haven normally filled with tens of thousands of summer tourists was clogged with fleeing vehicles Monday after the entire resort city of South Lake Tahoe was ordered to leave as a ferocious wildfire raced toward Lake Tahoe, a sparkling gem on the California-Nevada border.

Witness: Police requested an unlicensed bail agent to give cover before he killed a man

A police officer requested "lethal cover" before an unlicensed bail agent opened fire and killed a man wielding a knife in Palm Springs, a prosecution witness testified in a preliminary hearing today. Fabian Hector Herrera, 36 years-old, was arrested on April 23 for the shooting death of 33-year-old David Spann. The shooting occurred on the same day at about 2:30 a.m. in the 100 block of East Via Escuela. Authorities say he fired the fatal shots after Spann, wielding a knife, lunged toward him and several police officers inside his home.

Animal control officer hospitalized after being attacked by 2 pit bulls in Riverside

An animal control officer was attacked by a pair of pit bulls roaming a Riverside property, the officer suffered bites to one of his legs before he used force to repel the canines. According to the Riverside County Department of Animal Services, Officer Michael Cox went to the 2500 block of Mount Vernon Avenue, on the west side of Box Springs Mountain Reserve Park, shortly after 11 a.m. to investigate complaints that four dogs were on a homeowner's adjacent but vacant fenced property.
