Fentanyl Poisoning Arrest

Date:

Reporting Deputy: Sergeant Ryan Marcuse

File # CN182370017

Details:

On August 25, 2018, about 11:40 PM, Perris Sheriff’s Station Deputies were dispatched to a call of an unresponsive male adult in the 22000 block of Hoofbeat Way, city of Canyon Lake. Upon deputies’ arrival, it was determined a 30-year-old male was deceased from unknown causes. In May 2022, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Overdose Death Investigations and Narcotics Unit (ODIN) assumed this case as it was determined the decedent, Devahn Reed, was a victim of a Fentanyl Poisoning. The investigation continued and a suspect, Christopher Koppa a 36-year-old resident of San Diego, was identified as being the suspect responsible for selling the Fentanyl that killed Reed. Additionally, Investigators assigned to ODIN identified a second Fentanyl Poisoning Koppa was responsible for. This poisoning occurred on September 11, 2018, at 9:26 AM, when Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station Deputies were dispatched to a call of a deceased male in the 31000 block Cedarhill Lane, city of Lake Elsinore. ODIN Investigators determined the decedent, 34 year-old Patrick Schwab, was also a victim of Fentanyl Poisoning.

Christopher Koppa

On August 8, 2022, Koppa was located and taken into custody by ODIN personnel without incident. Koppa was currently on probation for several narcotic offenses. Koppa was later booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center for two counts of Murder. This investigation is ongoing and anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Master Investigator Robert Cornett at 951-955-1700. As a reminder, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department wants to remind citizens of the dangers of illicit narcotics many which may contain Fentanyl. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 100 times stronger than morphine and can cause death or serious bodily harm.
