Update:

Investigators are continuing to investigate this homicide. The decedent has been identified as 41-year-old Kaushal Niroula.

Details:

On Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at 2:35 PM, deputies from the Cois Byrd Detention Center were notified of an unresponsive inmate. Deputies and medical staff immediately assessed the inmate and initiated medical aid while waiting for paramedics. Despite life-saving actions, paramedics pronounced the inmate deceased.

Injuries were observed on the inmate. Deputies secured the area and began an investigation. Investigators from the Corrections Intelligence Bureau and Central Homicide Unit responded and assumed the investigation. The identity of the decedent is being withheld pending notification to the family.

Rodney Sanchez

The investigation revealed that the decedent died after an altercation with another inmate. The suspect has been identified as 61-year-old Rodney Sanchez. Homicide charges were added, and Sanchez will remain in custody.
