Details:

On August 14, 2023, at 12:36 a.m., deputies from the John Benoit Detention Center found an unresponsive male in a housing unit cell. Custody staff and jail medical personnel immediately administered life-saving measures. Paramedics responded and assumed life-saving measures. However, he was ultimately pronounced deceased.

Investigators from the Corrections Central Investigations Bureau responded and assumed the investigation. The inmate has been identified as 70-year-old Steven Crawford of Cathedral City. There are no signs of foul play, and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Investigator John Layos at (951) 922-7152.
