Mirror, Mirror On the Wall

Date:

Imagine for just a minute you’re walking through a department store and you happen to pass by the cosmetic counter. There, covering the countertops, is an array of lipsticks, face powders, blushes, mascara, and, of course, an abundance of mirrors! Out of the corner of your eye, you notice a young lady standing in front of one of those mirrors — her hair is a mess, her lipstick is smeared and outside the guidelines of her lips, plus she has a big gob of mascara under one eye.

Since she has taken the time to check herself out in the mirror, you think she’ll now fix the tousled hair and mussed up face, but to your bewilderment, she smiles into the mirror and simply walks off. Okay – kinda odd!

But this same script is played out every day by people who gather knowledge to themselves but walk away and do nothing with it. Think about it – knowledge is useless without action!

It reminds me of a verse found in James 1. It describes an individual who is called “a hearer of the word and not a doer.” This person also looks into a mirror, and apparently also needs some ‘repair’ work, but just walks away. The mirror here actually holds a two-fold purpose: we’re to fix the obvious problems plus “see” God’s purpose for our lives. Look into the mirror of God’s word and discover your true character, gifts, and potential – and then act on them!

What qualities did God put into your life that get your inner motor running at high speed? A wise person once said, “A man may be equipped with tons of theory. He may have the best of skills, the most positive of attitudes and the strongest of beliefs. But if he just sits on his butt with all these attitudes, nothing is going to come out of it. Action is the basis of all success.”

If you’ve watched any news at all the past couple of months, you must realize that things are a mess! Name almost any area of our society and there is controversy attached to it ~~ be it politics, the police, religion, historical statues, eating out, or beach-going. It’s pretty crazy!

So what are you doing about it? Are you part of the solution or part of the problem? Life is way to short to ride through uninvolved, as some passenger screaming their way through a ride on a scary roller coaster. Where is the purpose in that?!

Listen – good intentions are great, but if that’s as far as you get, you don’t even have lift-off! Take those expensive Nike Air Max shoes out for a walk and get to work. Take your Samsung Galaxy S20 cell phone and dial in some numbers. Startup the engine in your Nissan Maxima and drive somewhere to help with something!! Just do something!

The famous John Wesley once said, “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.”

Security is for cadavers – rise and shine!
