Unacceptable Delays: Ruiz Calls on IRS to Improve Service, Expedite Returns for Local Families

Date:

Congressman Raul Ruiz, M.D. (CA-36) pressed the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to immediately resolve delays in service that have resulted in an enormous backlog of unprocessed tax returns. Heeding the concerns of Southern California residents who have faced unprecedented processing delays, Ruiz called on IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig to improve responsiveness to ensure residents can file their taxes in a timely and painless manner.

“People rightfully expect quality services from their government institutions,” Dr. Ruiz wrote in his letter to Commissioner Rettig. “While the IRS is currently under difficult circumstances, there is no excuse for poor customer assistance and an extreme backlog of service.”

According to officials, the backlog of returns is several times the normal amount, and the National Taxpayer Advocate identified “processing and refund delays” as the most serious issues encountered by taxpayers. Furthermore, the IRS’ challenges have resulted in frustrating customer service, as only roughly 11% of calls to the IRS are answered.

Citing constituent concerns, Ruiz demands IRS improve responsiveness
